Shades of Grey
an excerpt
The door slammed behind her as she ran, seemingly in terror. Ramius rolled over and sat up in his bed, wondering what had just happened. He remembered getting very much into what he was doing, finally letting a little bit of passion into his life, and yet, when she'd looked at him just then she had screamed and pushed him away. At first he was bewildered, and then his anger began to rise. He thought to himself, what right did she have to leave like that? Who does she think I am? But he stopped this line of thinking immediately. That is the sort of thing that will lead me into evil, and I can't have that. There's too much I must still accomplish to waver now. He rose from the bed and walked across his bedchamber, with only an oil lamp illuminating the room. He looked into his mirror and saw what had frightened the girl. His eyes had changed from their normal brown, to a brilliant red.
Ramius cursed himself, and grabbed the mirror, and stopped himself just before he smashed it. I cannot let my anger control me like this. As soon as I let it control me, I am lost to the ways of evil. There's no way I can allow that. There was a knocking upon his door and he heard them calling to him. “Sir, is everything all right? Your consort was seen fleeing. Did she displease you somehow?”
Ramius acknowledged that one of his men were there, and called back, making sure to keep his back to the door, lest they see these vile red eyes of his. “Yes, everything is fine, and she didn't displease me at all.” He decided to leave it at that, anything else he said could be interpreted in a way that would tarnish his reputation, and his reputation was very important at this point. Ramius thought for a second and placed the voice that had called to him as Alaric, one of his personal favorites. “Alaric?”
“Yes sir?”
“We shall convene the council in the morning. See that the necessary preparations are taken care of.”
“Yes sir. Right away sir.”
Ramius could hear Alaric running down the hall to take care of the preparations. He knew that they would be complete. Now, if only he could find some peace and solace...
