Brief Author Bio: I'm a junior at Bennington College in Vermont. I love the simple things in life: a tub of ice cream that looks just gross enough that my housemates won't steal it, small nail clippers with files, a weekend away every so often, backrub exchanges, online games, nutella. I study music and drama, but as most college students are, I am incredibly confused about life and just what I'm supposed to do about it. |

Synopsis: True Ground
This is a story of the life of a young woman who enters a world that she never knew existed. Born and raised amongst the Nahufu tribe of the North, Ketah had never known what was beyond her forest. However, when she travelled into the forest to gain her spirit totem, she decided to journey further and see just what was outside of her tiny village. What she finds is a world in trouble, where spirits are being harvested for energy, once-powerful cities are crumbling, and a cruel and radical tyrant named the Countess rules. Science is flourishing, technology is amazing, but Ketah finds that in this new advanced world, man has forgotten the most basic of developments: that is, humanity and the responsibility of caring for the world and its creatures. With the help of her spirit, and a dapper young theif named Ainsley, can she possibly turn the world around? And why does the Countess want the family heirloom that was given to her the night before her coming of age? This story deals with ideas of love and peace, and the questions of whether progress and humanity can coexist. It is about Ketah's journey into the world, about her courage, and about the sacrifices and betrayals she faces. Is it fate that she is the last woman alive with a spirit in this stark world? Or is it merely coincidence that she ended up with the amulet of the moon? Can she, a small, strappy girl, do anything to change the world? Ketah's story is that of us all: the story of trying to overcome and create ones own fate. And in the process, she learns about herself, the world, love, and the complexity of the issues at hand. Sometimes the world isn't as simple as good and evil.
Excerpt: True Ground
“Sit still and you will feel the weight of your body on the ground as thought the floor were pushing at you, holding you up. You will feel the pressure of the air around you. Even when the air feels still,” he would say. “For everything is in ever constant motion, Ketah. There is no such thing as stillness. Only by trying to hold yourself still, will you notice that you never truly can be. Your heart beats. Your eyes blink. Your lungs breathe; just as the wind blows. The plants grow. The stars shift. The sun and moon drift. The world is motion. Not even in death is there stillness, for your body becomes the ever changing earth, and your soul the ever changing sky.”
