Benjamin's Breath (WIP)
an excerpt
She was gone.
Benjamin Cross tossed his laden keychain onto the small table next to the door. The Pikachu bounced, the 'Class of 2002' keyring thudded heavily and the small plastic picture frame slid off of the edge to dangle in the air. Benjamin made no move to right it.
Late afternoon sunlight drifted into the apartment from between the blinds. Dust motes danced in the variegated shaft, never seeming to land despite the yellow kitchen table beneath it. The air was stuffy, windows shut against the early November chill. Benjamin's sneakers made deep prints in the plush beige carpet as he walked across it and to the kitchen.
He liked to call it the hole in the wall, since the kitchen was small enough to be such a thing. Benjamin scanned the stove, noticed nothing amiss, but saw many of the magnets on the refrigerator were missing. The little ones shaped like realistic food that she had so liked. They were all gone, leaving bright spots on the bumpy door of the freezer. The tea towel on the handle of the fridge was still there. It was the one with the little cups of coffee.
