Synopsis: Cash and Carry

Tim Porter is an unordained United Methodist layman called upon unexpectedly to lead a tiny rural church for three months until a new pastor can be appointed. Carla Grove is a young convenience store clerk who lives her life online and in the pages of her favorite novels. After a chance meeting, they learn from each other in unexpected ways.

Excerpt: Cash and Carry

“You can't scratch it here,” Carla said.
“Aw, c'mon,” the man insisted.
“No. That's the rule,” she said, tugging nervously at the sleeve of her hoodie. “You have to take the ticket outside. If you win something, you can bring it back in.”
He glared at Carla before marching out the door of the Young Street Market in a huff.
Carla looked at the clock. Five a.m. Sunday. Two more hours to quitting time.
