Valeria's Daughter
an excerpt

“I’d prefer to walk,” Merrith told Jack the next morning, as he approached her with the horse.

He stopped short. “Excuse me?”

“I’d prefer to walk,” Merrith repeated. “We’re not moving very quickly. It wouldn’t slow anyone down, and it would be easier on the horse.”

“The horse is fine,” Jack told her. “Get on.”

“No,” said Merrith. And so she walked. It wasn’t as grand an idea as it originally seemed. In an hour or two, her boots were soaked through, and her cape had collected a sodden, icy fringe that kept scraping against the backs of her ankles, until they were red and raw.
