Watch Over Me
an excerpt
Prologue
Becky ran from the school, her backpack thrown over her shoulder even as she turned to wave. She was going to be late if she didn’t rush. The bus was aleady closing it’s doors as she ran up to them, her hands slapping against the yellow metal as she yelled for him to open the door. She ran up the steps, thanking the bus driver even as she scanned the seats for her friends. Cheeks flush was the run and the cool autumn air were the hint of what had happened – that and her smile.
Alice hung over the back of the seat, ignoring the shout of the driver to sit down. “Did he ask you?” Everyone knew who ‘he’ was. Evan. Evan the tall, blond, football player. Nice, sweet, every girl wanted to date him. He had just moved to the town three days before school started, so he was still an unknown, but everyone wanted to know more about him. The gossipe vine had learned soo much to.
He had lived in Seattle before this, but no one could get him tot alk about that. His dad worked for some company that had him out of the country a lot and his mom was an English teacher who decided to move here. She taught eighth grade though, So Becky didn’t know a lot about her. They were serniors, what happened at the middle school was ignored by them.
He was mysterious, ad didn’t have a lot of close friends yet. Sure, he hung out with the the football team, but it’s not like he was every really at their houses or them at his. He was smart though, and as much as the girls liked the rest of the football team … Evan was the only one who has the SATs to be talking about fancy schools – and that was without him even considering football.
When Alice asked id he had asked her, becky blushed and nodded. “Uh huh! I have a date for the dance!”
The bus driver yelled for them to be quiet as they erupted into squeals and giggled. Pplans were hatched though before the first of the group had to get off the bus. They would meet at the mall on Saturday and pick out dresses. It was going to be great. Now that becky had a date, and not just any date, al four of them had their dates for the homecoming dance. Their talk quickly fell to who was wearing what and what to do after the dance.
When she got off the bus, becky could hardly keep from running home. By the time her annoying little brother was igored and she had grabbed something to we eat, the enormity of the fact she was gong to the dance with THE Evan finally hit her. Her math homework was a blur as all she could think about was the upcoming dance.
