Brief Author Bio:

A high school junior, according to my mum I've wanted to be a writer since kindergarten, when I first wrote fanfiction for Hercules and Xena: Warrior Princess, and many stories about twin princesses going on adventures. I founded my school's writing club in my freshman year and have been running it as co-president since then. I also participate in my school's theatre company, gay-straight alliance, and show choir (the ones who sing and dance).

Synopsis: The Adventures of Eli and Jade (working title)

The year is 2020, and the setting is the launch of the seventh Mark Madison floating city, the Viola. In MMCs, city workers (including those in the performance and entertainment departments) are forbidden from having relationships with inhabitants. In fact, they're not really supposed to talk to them beyond what would be considered necessary or polite. But when an inhabitant with a fascination for antiques meets a city worker who performs classic hits in an old-fashioned saloon and dance hall, who knows how long the city rules will hold out? Will they risk having themselves labeled "amantes" and put into a detention center until their case is reviewed? When a situation is misinterpreted and they're reported, the chase begins, all around the city, led by the seemingly cruel "odiente", Matthew Foley. Will Jade and Eli live happily ever after back on the mainland? Or will MMC laws break them apart forever?

Excerpt: The Adventures of Eli and Jade (working title)

Jade turned around to watch Nadya, the Russian girl who performed after her, but practically jumped when she felt a tap on her arm.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you.” It was the mystery man. Jade studied him now that he was closer to her, and was surprised to find him marginally attractive.
“No, it’s fine. I’m just, I mean, I’m not supposed to talk to inhabitants, sorry.” Jade fumbled over her words, and fought back a blush at how silly she must sound. He just smiled at her and gestured towards the stage.
“No one will notice if we both watch the stage and happen to share a few casual comments about the performer.” Jade looked nervously for aid from Janet, but she was busy mixing drinks for customers. Feeling her stomach start to clench, Jade turned back towards the stage again, and tried to focus on what Nadya was singing.
“So where’s her accent from?” The guy asked her, nodding towards Nadya.
“Russia,” Jade replied, “but I think she said something about being half Ukranian, or Polish, or something like that.” Jade saw the guy nod out of the corner of her eye.
“And you?” he inquired, “where are you from?”
“Around,” Jade replied. “From Viola now, I guess.”
“But Viola isn’t where you were born, or grew up, or had your first kiss, or -” Jade’s stomach dropped and she spun towards the guy and whispered angrily:
“Look, I don’t know who you think you are, but I don’t even know your name, and here you are trying to chat me up, when you damn well know that inhabitants and city workers aren’t supposed to talk.” The guy bit his lip and looked down.
“I’m sorry, I should have introduced myself. That was rude of me.” He looked up again and met her angry eyes with his own calmer countenance. “My name’s Eli. I live across the street from you, and I saw you on your way to work tonight, and I just…I just felt like I had to know who you were. I’m sorry, I really shouldn’t have tried to talk to you, I know. I can leave now if you want, and never come back -” Jade put her hand on his arm.
“I might have overreacted.” She glanced nervously around the room – nobody seemed to have noticed their conversation. “I just don’t want to lose this job before it even starts.” He let a small smile creep across his lips. With another visual sweep of the room, Jade had an idea. “We can probably talk in my dressing room. Come on, while nobody’s watching.”
