Cafe Bohemia
an excerpt
Grey rain spit on the pavement again, its misery carving its way onto the ground in rivulets. Alanna could feel it in her beaten and worn Walmart shoes, covered with splatters of mocha and dried milk. The damp chill of water soaked through her shoes and dull white socks, now sullied grey by rainwater. It trickled down her face, clung to her eyelashes and soaked her blue hoodie. While the day had been optimistically grey, the night was casting its dusky shadows onto the concrete buildings and her cheeks were turning a flushed rose red from the walking in the cold. Blue hues were overtaking the day, coating the earth with the mystery of night. Yet Alanna was ignoring this splendor in her haste to read her book as she was walking along as a couple of stray drops would occasionally hit the pages. The pavement flashed underneath the pavement of her book, occasionally looking up to make sure she wasn't about to dash headlong into a building. Home was her destination, a small apartment in the city of Philadelphia. She had her cat waiting there for her, and Kara would probably be there. The words of her book began to swim in front of her eyes and the pages melt as she began to think of her direction and where she was heading.
