Synopsis:

Cain Fairchilde is a talented young wizard with a knack for getting himself in trouble. His best (re: only) friend Geoffrey is a half-beast with a knack for attracting mobs despite his intelligence and surprisingly charming personality. When the fairy Gloria tells them that Cain is destined to stop Crazesprocket the Maniacal from taking over the kingdom of Ranpora, they both think she's nuts. When she won't stop bugging them about it, Cain takes the job.

Also, miniature shapeshifting ducks.

Excerpt:

Riverwalk, despite its name, was not located anywhere near a river. Most people assumed the name was the founder’s bad idea of a joke. It was a prosperous town, acting as a rest stop for many travelers on their way between the larger cities of Ranpora. There were a large number of inns and shops, as well as a healthy amount of taverns, usually attached to the inns. It was fairly diverse for a town of its size, and thus, not prone to pitchfork wielding mobs. Well, mostly. One did pop up once, but it was a special case. Overall though, Riverwalk was a decent place to live, especially if one happened to be worried about pitchfork wielding mobs. And because of this, Geoffrey and Cain barely even caused a ripple when they arrived. Despite the fact that a wizard and a half-beast were odd traveling companions, the citizens of Riverwalk were perfectly content to ignore them, so long as they remembered to request a room with two separate beds.
