His long years as a caravan scout had hardened Proviin’s heart to a lot of things, but he was still a compassionate enough man that finding a child dead in the desert could crack it. It was a boy, naked and hairless even upon his head, no more than ten years of age. Proviin’s heart only broke further, though, when he went to the child and found him still breathing. No child should live to suffer such wounds.
