Who Does Earth Belong To?
an excerpt

Chapter 11

The phone call finally came through. Once the conversation ended, he started his preparations for the evening. He only had an hour until sunset, so he would have to hurry. It had been a while since he had scouted out his next target area, but he remembered it as though he had been there yesterday. The blood pounded in his ears as he anticipated the coming events of the evening.

Just over an hour later, he sat on the beach staring out into the water as the sun dipped below the horizon. It barely kissed the edge of the ocean in the distance and then completely slipped out of view and allowed the city of Los Angeles to be covered in darkness. From this vantage point, he could hear the crowds of people up on Santa Monica pier having fun, laughing, talking, and walking around. But he could not enter the festivities, since it would ruin the excited feeling that washed through his body. Down here on the sand, he was able to get ready for what he was going to do soon.

Two hours later, he was ready. The crowds were slowly dissipating as parents took their children home, dates were ending, and friends broke apart to go to sleep. It was time to do his work. Standing, he dusted the sand off his jeans and briefly touched the knife that sat tucked inside his jacket. His mind whirled with a dark thrill that would come with what he would soon do to an unsuspecting victim.

He could not immediately spot any potential targets. When he had used the bar as the site of his first mission, it would be much harder to find a drunken person leaving the pier; however, that was now part of the sport that he found in his work. His second victim would not be drunk, this was fairly certain, but he still needed to approach someone who was alone, since he was only allowed to take one person, not two. This factor he had not taken into account when choosing the pier for tonight’s action. He would still have to complete his task though and it seemed he needed to do it quickly.

Wandering to the dimly lit parking lot, he noticed a couple hand in hand walking toward a car. He followed them silently, hiding behind other vehicles, but staying close enough to listen in. Once the pair reached the car, the male leaned his companion on the door and started kissing her. The pair engaged in a make out session for a few minutes. He could barely see them with the shadows covering their bodies against the car.

“Oh David,” moaned the girl between kisses. The pair seemed to be unaware they were watched. A plan formed in his head. He stood from his crouched position nearby, put up the hood of his jacket to create a shadow on his face that would mask his appearance, and then approached them.

Letting out a shocked sound, he then cried out, “David, how could you do this to me?” The sudden noise scared the pair who broke off from their actions. He walked directly up to the man and said in an affronted sounding voice, “You said you loved me, David! You said we were perfect for each other!”

The girl made a gagging sound in her throat. “I thought you were straight!” she yelled at him. Wiping her mouth with a disgusted look on her face, she pushed David away from her and stepped into the light of a nearby lamppost, which lit up her human features and blonde hair. She then darted off toward the pier, likely to find her friends.

David yelled after her to come back, saying, “I have only been with a couple guys in the past! That was years ago in college and I was only experimenting, I swear!” The girl continued running. Angrily, David turned to other man and growled, “Who the hell are you and why did you do that? I have no idea what you are talking about!”

He said nothing. All he did was put his hand inside his jacket to pull out the knife. Before David could tell what he was doing, the knife was already between his ribs and he could not react. The man took the knife out once David’s life had been ended, wiped the blade clean, and left the parking lot. The body would soon be found and he needed to be as far away as possible when that happened.
