Nebraska, 1944
an excerpt

Reed pushed the hair out of his face and took in his surroundings. He remembered listening to his parents talk about the old country, and how they had trouble putting food on the table and how dangerous it was to step outside their little flat during the First World War. Now, even though another war was looming, their farm seemed unfazed by it all. There was enough food on the table to feed the family of six, money to buy anything necessary, a father who was not called to fight in the war, and the outdoors, which was safe from the harms of the war being fought overseas.
