“They don’t hate you,” Caradoc said. “Not really. If they hated you, they’d have taken the chance on scrambling your mind and erased your memories of us. They’re – we’re just a bit used to being the only people that matter.”
“Or, you could say that you’re snobs,” said Maggie. “That’s a shorter way of saying it.”
“We’re not!” he said, and stopped kicking the door in indignation. “It’s not that, we’re just used to … well, aren’t we better? We can do things other people don’t even dream of trying.”
“Because you don’t tell them!” said Maggie. “It’s not as though you’re born being able to do this. You’re just keeping a secret, and that’s not that hard to do. Caradoc Evans, you’re no better than anyone else!”
“I never said I was!”
“Oh, no, you didn’t, did you?”
“No!”
“You just thought you were better than me, then, and not people in general?”
“What?”
“Because people in general are better than me?”
“What? Where did you even –”
“Because I’m not good enough to sit next to your girlfriend!”
He stopped and stared at her, mouth open and face a mixture of anger and … embarrassment? “She’s not my girlfriend!”
“That’s not,” said Maggie, “exactly what she said. Now go away and let me get changed. I’m tired.” He said nothing more, but turned and fairly stamped out of the room.
