hey, i'm in it with you. not sure where my story fits now, but it sounds like this is it. it's gonna be action! it's gonna be satire! it's gonna be sci-fi, minus all the technological advancements! it's gonna be suspense! it's gonna actually make the word count!!! hahah.

I have no idea what I want to write yet, except that I'm pretty sure I want at least some of my characters to have super-powers like telepathy or super-strength, basically you average Marvel superpowers, but I also want there to be lots of day-to-day stuff, like people going shopping and riding the bus and such, because hey, write what you know, right? There's also going to be romance and whatever else I can get in, so, well, I don't know if it'll be mainstream exactly... I don't know what it'll be, I just hope to make it to 50.000 and keep my sanity :-)

My novel will definitely fit in this category, and I am SO glad it's there this year. Unless I was missing something, it wasn't here at all last year. My novel will definitely have elements of some of the other styles, but basically, it doesn't at all fit into the other categories. It doesn't fit into 'Other' either, I am NOT reinventing the wheel, or the novel as the case may be.

This straightforward, straigntup novel category should be popular, and because it regroups elements of the other styles, we should be able to help each other out nicely.

Can't wait to start... Famous last words, I'm sure.

I'm definitely mainstream. I listed as humor/satire in my profile, but I think the action/adventure bit will be strong, as well as some feel good stuff, a bit of spec fic, and generally, a good time.

I have to say a definite maybe. I plan to have horror elements, but it's not going to be a Koontz/King-like fest o' gore or something. My protagonist is a woman who is working through a change of career and lifestyle (or attempting to), but I don't think it's full-on chicklit. Not enough magic for fantasy... I plan to have humor, but not a straight-up laughfest...

So, I'm calling in the catch-all Mainstream genre.

i'm actually torn between tdwo different story ideas.one is mainstream and the other would be urban fiction. both have been plotted out (themainstream one more than the other one(. we'll see what happens.

Not sure where mine fits. "The Real World" is mainly about an alcoholic author who allows his best friend's niece to move in with him after his divorce (no, this is NOT Californication. The storyline is much different). She's a little strange and the story revolves around them trying to put their lives back together; him after his divorce and later, her after her brother is killed in a car crash (at least, that what I think happened to her).
It's all planned out, for once and I actually have a motivational calendar that I made myself! Hurrah!
So, what do you think?

I'm pretty sure my novel fits this category. There'll be elements of mystery, and probably horror and romance, but it doesn't really fit any category. Ergo, mainstream fiction!

Now I'm all confused... I'd posted this under LiteraryFiction, because I'm pretty sure that's where mine falls, but since it does deal with faith and things spiritual, I think it may be a genre-crosser. :) Then I read someone's definition of "literary fiction" and I'm not sure I fit there...but I don't know that my novel would be "readable on a plane ride across the country". Anyway... You can help me decide! :)

It's going to be called "Coventry" right now ~ not sure if it'll change or not. It's slightly "The Hours"-esque in that it's three women in three different time periods...all connected by Coventry Cathedral in England ~ when the first cathedral was VERY new, during WWII when it was destroyed, and modern-day. Turns out they're all the same soul all working through lessons, at least one of which she refuses to learn and is having to repeat lifetime after lifetime. They are pretty inextricably linked with the location. It's about loss, destruction, and redemption. At least I hope that's how it turns out. :)

Characters:
* Madeline ~ She's only a little girl when the first cathedral is being built. Her father's one of the master stone masons. I know I'll be carrying her through at least young adulthood, but I'm not sure where that's going to lead yet.
* Magdalene (Maggie) ~ She's around 18-22 (unclear yet...could go to 25 or so) during WWII. Orphaned several years before, she and her two brothers are living with their uncle, a priest who serves at Coventry. She's there when the city falls victim to a German air raid and the cathedral is lost. And...that's about all I know about her so far.
* Madison (Maddie) ~ I know the most about Maddie so far. She's an Episcopal priest...goes to England to visit friends and just feels drawn to the cathedral. An exchange is worked out and she begins serving at Coventry. Until very heavy emotional stuff she's pushed down and pushed down comes back to bite her in the butt. I don't want to give away too much, but let's just say her seminary training was in New York City...from 2000 until 2003.

They're all guided and guarded by the archangel Raziel. He's actually a character a friend has RPed with, but she's given me permission to use him in the novel because he's so integral to all three of their lives.

I've been playing with my characters for almost a year (yes, in charming fashion, they popped up while I was attempting NaNo last year...), so I'm feeling pretty comfortable with them at this point. Well, Madeline and Maddie anyway. Maggie is who I think will be my surprise...she's the one I know the least about in spite of me feeling like she's sort of the key to it all.

We'll see how it all comes together. I've got some broad sketches about how I want to set things up, but if I learned anything last year it's that no matter how I plan the characters will take it where they want to go.

Buckle up! It's gonna be an interesting ride!! :) Whatever genre I end up in.

My story has a lot of components--horror, mystery, romance--so I decided to stick it in mainstream fiction. I'll probably post in the other categories as well, but...just making this my home base for now.

I'm still trying to figure out where my story will end up being. I know the plot, it's more or less figuring out the catagory it would fall into that's my problem. I think that this is the most likely catagory but there's still a lack of certainty.

It's a story that deals with human angels (angels born to live a life here on earth) and their corruption, along with the destruction of Heaven and Hell.

There isn't a really strong pull on the religious aspects, more or less good, bad, and the things in between instead. As well as elements of a romantic relationship, at least one death that i'm aware of, personal conflicts, and probably a few other things.

For some reason it just doesn't seem to fit the religion catagory to me, but I could be wrong.

Aha! I think I've found the category for my novel. It didn't seem to match any of the other genres, and besides, it doesn't really fit into one specific genre, anyway....so, mainstream!

I actually think all three of my novels fit in here this year.

A bit of tragedy

and many more.

Hey Vertical Chaos, I think Coventry could fit almost anywhere depending on your treatment. Frankly, if I were flying across country I might give it a go.

That's a goofy definition, anyway. Also 'mainstream' is a funny word... but... it's the most cross-genre-y word we have on the forums right now, so... LOL yeah

Mine's going to be about a retiring demon-hunter (age 26-31 haven't pinned it down) who left after the end of a particularly disheartening hunt. She stays with a friend and finds the perfect new home, but of course, just like it's hard to leave the mafia it's hard to leave behind the supernatural world. Her boss, her ex, the loan officer and forces of evil all work together to try to thwart Jillian's vision of an ideal future in the mundane.

Okay, that sounded a little crappier than it looked on paper before...

Hey, nabikineumann, I love the story idea (I don't think it sounds so crappy)--I'd pick that one up for a plane ride, or just to read during a break at work and have people wondering about me all over again.

I'm glad they did add this category; I was ripping my hair out over where my story would fit. It's got some humor throughout and a little suspense at the end, but really it's just about slightly quirky people living out their lives. I'm drawing on personal experience to write about an Italian restaurant and the slightly odd people who work and frequent there. I guess there's a little mystery element because they never see the owner's face (they can describe her perfectly: she's a shadowy silhouette in a big leather chair behind a big desk), but that's never really cleared up. Definitely more of a mainstream/general fiction than anything else.

Is this where I go?

I have a terrible dilemma here, trying to categorize this sucker. I thought it was fantasy but they all say it has to have fantastical/magical elements, then I thought SciFi, but I know I'll never be that technical. Comedy - well, hopefully, but that isn't all it is. Erotic fiction... well, there will be some getting-it-on going on, but it's not the focus of the story...

Here's my premise: A tentacled sea-dwelling alien comes to earth and takes human form. He is looking for a place that he can set up a tourist-type business for his tentacled buddies, in order to make mucho moolah for his pod (family). He finds himself in a small fictional California town filled with eccentric characters, and along the way, he discovers that having only one tentacle isn't so bad...

Yes, I know that isn't the bestest way to describe it but I'm at work and don't have time to really make it sound great. I am trying for wacky/funny/sexy here with minimal angst. God knows what I will end up with.

So, is this my category or do I move on?

Oh yeah, and I'm going for win # 5 this year!

I second the science-fiction theme for your story. You can get very specific with your world, but you don't have to go into detail at all. If the dude only eats purple food, you don't have to give us the biological reason, and we don,t need to know how tentacle-dude even found Earth...

Yay! A NaNo genre to finally call my own! I always put "Other Genres" in the past... but this is definitely where I belong. I've got action, adventure, romance, and a lot of British people fighting with each other. It's going to be great!

I have been calling mine a mystery, but maybe it fits better here. It is the story of this serial burglar in a small town, told from two different perspectives (both first person, switching between the two). Both are 20-something females, so it is also about how the case effects them and their jobs (although it is definitely not chick-lit). So, the mystery drives the story, but there is other stuff going on and it isn't really a traditional mystery either. Does that sound more mainstream-y?

I'm writing something that involves two teenagers in a barn in the sixties (October crept up on me a bit :-s) that I don't think is lit-fic but sounds like it might fit here. The Coventry nano sounds amazing - I'm a little biased as I love the place (it's about two hours away by bus, train and bus).

Current title: The Scarecrow
Current progress: I don't have a middle yet!

Two teenagers and a barn? That's cool. Very 'Of Mice and Men', or at least that's the image I'm getting.
