Wow, what an honor to have the very first post for the "Washington :: Elsewhere" group! I feel like I should type something profound, but nothing comes to mind.
I've been waiting a long time for the next NaNoWriMo. 11 months, to be exact. And of course, some big life-events occurred just a couple of weeks ago that has me questioning if I'll have time this year to participate. I sure hope to!
Looking forward to meeting all the people returning from last year and all the newcomers this year. Please post where you are all from. And if there's anyone around the Port Townsend area, please send me a note and say hi. Maybe we can meet up and get a cup of coffee somewhere.
Good luck all! I'll see you around on the NaNoWriMo forums!
Ryan

Hurrah! I'm happy to see a PT group here. I'm a junior in high school and I'm thinking about trying to a get a writing group together, if I can. Tomorrow I get to go pimp NaNo for my AP English class which should be...fun. Ish. I'll try to be convincing, but unfortunately, most people that I tell just seem to think that I'm crazy. And from reading other threads, I realize that this seems to be a common trend, heh heh.

Yup, that's a very common trend! People are normally either one extreme or another. "That sounds awesome, can I do it too?" or "You're crazy, you'll never be able to do it!" Don't let it discourage you, though! Good luck with talking to your class about it. Hopefully you'll be able to snag a couple more students. I found it much easier last year when I was with a group of friends keeping each other accountable.

Hey Phoenix! Long time no see. There's always time for 2-3 hours a night of writing? We'll see. :) I hope so!

Ahaha, I refuse to be discouraged! I think that I may have gotten through to a few of them. I'm planning on subtly pushing them in the right direction at all given opportunities.
Are there often writing groups in P.T. that get together for wrimo? I was wondering about it...and if there aren't, there needs to be some. Aaaah I can't be thinking about that, I still don't have a plot! *tears out hair*

Ah! Why have I never seen this before? I was on the NaNo forums last year, but it never occurred to me to look for other PT residents/visitors until terenewen linked me here.
I'm a freshman in highschool and doing NaNo for a second time. I also did JanNoWriMo and JuNoWriMo this year, but I'm most excited about NaNo because hey-- it's the big one!
For anyone else who might be interested, I have a livejournal community especially for residents of Port Townsend set up (and anyone from Jefferson County should feel welcome to join as well as PT residents). I created it for myself and two others (terenewen being one) when we attempted JuNoWriMo, but I'd like to open it to everyone now. :) If you're interested, visit us at http://community.livejournal.com/ptnowrimo ! All you have to do is create an LJ account and join the community in order to have posting access.

It's moments like these when I wonder: Am I one of three remaining people on the face of the earth with Absolutely No Interest in LiveJournal or any other blog site?

P, allow me to assure you that you are not alone. I feel like LiveJournal is the new AOL. Or something.
I grew up in Port Townsend. It amuses me to remember high school. :-) I did not fit in very well. :-)
I currently live on the south end of Whidbey but visit PT every couple of weeks to visit my parents and ride my horse (or if it is raining, play Settlers of Catan).
This is my first NaNoWriMo. I am dithering about doing an outline or not. I figure it will be more fun to just wing it this time.

I definitely know a lot of people who aren't into any sort of blogging. :) I love it myself, but it's not for everyone.
I'm currently going to a community school in PT because I didn't fit in at the high school either. It's an awkward place.
Good luck! ;) I had a great time in my first year- hope you do to!

Ooo--comparing LJ to AOHell? Wicked!
The issue of pre-planning turns out to be a really individual thing. Some folks do best with a detailed outline. Others find that an outline boxes them in so badly that they choke up. I like to have a couple of characters and a setting, maybe a general notion of where it's heading. And I like to have that 1-2 weeks before NaNo begins--enough time to kick some ideas around, but not enough to overthink it. I suspect that it's the literary equivalent of sky-diving for me. ;->
Re high school... I think Joss Whedon was right when he made it analogous to hell. It was interesting, though, to attend my 40th high school reunion this summer and discover 1) that our experiences of high school had varied enormously, 2) that we were 'way more alike than different, and 3) that everyone had felt like a misfit. Well, and 4, that time had improved nearly all of us. Heh.

Thanks, P, for sharing your thoughts on outlining... I think I will just wing it. I already have characters in mind, and a general direction to head--that will do. I have all my favorite books about writing laying around to read for inspiration to just get words on the page if I need them, so I will probably be okay.
I did tell everyone I know that I am doing this, and many will cheer me on, especially my Dad, who will demand to know where the day's words are if I do not send them to him the instant they are written. :) That alone will inspire words onto the page. My dad is a huge fan of my writing. :)

I am sooooooooo glad to see there are other PTers here! I did not want to have to drive to kitsap or olympia, even if my car were working! This is my first time doing NaNo but I did it on my own last winter, late december, early january and sure could have used some sounding boards/support from other writers. Hope we can meet up once or twice during this crazy thing.

Is there a time & a place that would work for everyone who wants to come? I'm good with the pub where we had the TGIO party last year, but it looks like we've got a few underage members this year, so... ?

That was a pretty good pub, but with minors we should probably pick a different location.
I'm free the evenings of Nov 3rd and Nov 4th. I'll just throw a place out there...Bread and Roses. I don't know how late they are open, but they have an upstairs sitting area that I bet we could get to ourselves.

There is also the possibility of the mezzanine at the Silverwater Cafe. There is a full service bar, but also seating outside the bar - we could even reserve part of it if we knew how many were coming...

Ok, so kick off is less than a week away and here is my proposal: Thursday or Friday night anyone who wants to meet and write or just talk about their novel or just talk about whatever gets together at the Silverwater, around sixish. Is anyone interested? I will be in charge of reserving an area if I can have a head count by say Tuesday evening.

Erm. Six-ish isn't the best for me--it's smack in the middle of suppertime. But if that's what works for everyone else, I could try to make it.

Hi All! I'm Madhatter, I'm 20 years old, and totally new at this (both not being a forum ghost, and doing nanowrimo). I live in Coupeville, and am a member of WIWA (Whidbey Island Writers Association)
I'm planning on winging this, other then getting a writing prompt from my online sister on the day of.
The closet thing I've come to this is writing for the WIWA contests, so any advice would be more then welcome.

just to verify, you are talking about Thursday, Nov 1st? If so, count me in as a "most likely." Time doesn't matter so much to me...I'm off at 5:00-ish. Maybe we could say 7:30 for drinks and/or dessert?

for me last year, the best advice I got was to not edit your work as you wrote. Dont go back and fix stuff because you'll never be able to finish on time. Also, having someone keep you accountable is a tremendous help. Good luck!

Hey, sectylady--you're back! I tried looking you up in Authors after the site reopened & didn't find you--thought you'd dropped out this year. Looks as if I just tried too soon; several people I didn't find before pop up now. Guess it took 'em a while to work the bugs out of that module. :-/
Anyway...howdy! And good luck this year!
