I'm not sure if I'm writing Mainstream Fiction or not.
The Book novel is about a women who finds out that she has been so well controlled by husband she did't even know it.
It seemed like a perfect marriage for 18 years.
till their daughters sweet sixteen birthday.

As long as the story is not primarily mystery, supernatural/fantasy, etc., it is either mainstream or literary. If the focus of your story is more on the woman figuring out her life than on social issues with her as a sort of representative, it is definitely mainstream as opposed to literary. Mainstream fic deals with development of a character; litfic deals more with discussing social/political/cultural issues than with the characters in the story.

I think mine is mainstream too then. I think it might deal with a few social issues and include bits of other genres, but it's really just a story.

Its going to be about a boy abused by his mother for all his life really who gets adopted and it should (if i do it right) show his progross and how he goes on to enjoy life...
...plus a billion other things to fill the word count up on...
What do you think?
I'm new...even if the story is complete rubbish as long as it hits 50k does it count? I know i wont be able to fill it up if i dont include long random dreams for example...does that matter?

Everybody's nano is rubbish. If someone says theirs isn't rubbish they are self-deluded.
A dream sequences are classic nanowrimo trick, along with characters who have stutters or are hard of hearing. In fact, after the dream sequence, your character should develop a stutter and then try to explain the dream sequence to another character who is hard of hearing.... :P

just to reiterate: it counts! but...yes, everyone´s nano is going to be rubbish as its a first draft. a first draft is rubbish. everyone writes for different reasons, however...
to complete nano inn itself is a great feat and a fantastic feeling ensues. However, if you want to be published, it can be seen as a first draft which can be reworked and reworked until the fingers, the characters or your loved ones bleed!
OK. Im writing mainstream fiction; last year i wrote self obssessed experimental nonsense...which im currently turning into literary fiction :) Mine this year is about Lily and max. max is alcoholic, Lily is not. They love each other, but are trying to overcome the drink. Thats it. For the twist...i´m building the character online through a blog. Please help me if you can!

I agree, if you feel you want to write it, then it will count, I'm sure.
I also agree that the 50,000 words we knock out here would be a rubbish novel - but that they could be the basis for something good.

Other than Mozart's compositions, I have yet to hear of a first draft that wasn't crappy and didn't have to be reworked at least once, usually more. Even if I end up keeping more than I delete or alter on my NaNo this year, I fully expect it to be one big bin of kitty litter come 1 December. It's rather comforting to know that I'm not the only one who feels that way. =)

Hey I think I need to change which category my novel falls under... to this one. O.K, Who do you think will do better nanowrimo men or women? I think women and it's not just because I'm a woman. Women use more words daily than men. So, I think nanowrimo works in our favorer. It should be easier for us to come up with 50k. But than also men set their mind more to one thing then women. Anyone have something to say about this?

It's just plain not true that women use more words than men -- I believe it's been proven that when the number of words a day used by men and women, men used more words -- women just appear to talk a lot more because they use gestures, which aren't easily put into words.
It more has to do with whether you're used to 1) writing a lot in a day, or 2) whether you're used to using loads and loads of description or not. Though I'm used to being prolific, I'm also used to being very terse and concise -- I don't waste my words at all. Because of that, my NaNo will be more sprawling than someone whose used to spending two pages describing a car. I've seen both genders wax poetic and drawl on, so I'd say that's more of a consideration than the male/female divide.
