[STICKY] Valley Roll Call!

I am requesting an official roll call for Shenandoah Valley Wrimos! There are currently 90 authors in our little region. So I am hoping to have at least 90 replies to this thread! Write as little or as much as you like but try to include the following:

Your Name and/or NaNoName
Your Hometown and/or where you will be writing from in November
How to best reach you.
If you want include something about yourself.

Example:

Name: Susan aka Susieiz
Hometown: Front Royal
Email: NaNoMail first and then I will send you my personal email.

Something about me: Lately I have had the urge to use the word "wonky" in a sentence. I don't know why.

Easy! Can't wait to hear from you and find out where everyone is so we can get some write-ins scheduled in your neck of the valley.

Your Co-ML Susan

----------
2006: The Scrapbook - I did it!
2007: Leaving Lucy (working title) - Success!
2008: Undecided, but it might start something like...He was a dark and stormy knight....

Woooo Hooooo! Hello out there all you Fellow Shenandoah Valley WriMos! We’d like to first send a hearty shout out to all our friends from last year, and it must be said, GOOD TO SEE YOU! Good to see you! And to all our fantastic newbies who have just hopped on this writing train, LaMishia and I would like to welcome you with open arms! (and notebooks and laptops)

We are about to embark on another fantastic year of word magic, character creating, plot primping, world weaving, novel narrating madness and as your Municipal Liaisons, we couldn’t be happier to be leading the charge down Novel Writing Alley.

You should know this November will be filled with creative highs, in which we will soar with you and creative lows, during which we will endeavor to lift you up. But never doubt the fact that we will be right there with you slogging through the muck of writers block or twinkling our toes ‘Tinker Bell’ style when you alone control the writing magic of ‘Never Never land’.

Here in our forum you will soon be able to check our Calendar of Events. It is chock full of opportunities to socialize and get support during Write-Ins and Meet-Ups. Soooo, since we value your participation we STRONGLY ENCOURAGE you to come on out and write with us and by strongly encourage we mean, IF YOU DON’T SHOW UP WE’LL BE LOPPING OFF HEADS! LOL Just kidding. ….or are we????

All jokes aside, we are super excited for the adventures about to be launched in the minds of all you Noveling WriMos and we’d consider it our honor to be a part of that. Should you decide that you don’t want to write with us (boo hiss!) or you just can't make it during our scheduled times or places, then feel free to set up your own meet-ups and write-ins and let us know so that we may add them to the Valley calendar. Heck, you never know, we might just drop in for a visit!

So pack your bags people, this is gearing up to be the best NaNo Year ever and if you let it be, it could be the ride of your life!!

ALL ABOARD THE CRAZY TRAIN!!!

Your Conductors, (ahem…Co-MLs,)
Augusta County (Staunton, Waynesboro, Fishersville and all others) NOVEMBER 15TH AT STONE SOUP

Hey everyone! We're on for Stone Soup this Saturday!

I've talked to the management at Stone Soup, and they are more than happy to have us meet there this coming Saturday, from 11 until 2, for a Halfway Point get-together. We can eat lunch, and talk, and write if you would like. I plan on being there the entire time, but you all can come and go as you please. I found out today that they have Wi-Fi there, so we can use the 'net if we need to. They also have outlets, but they asked that if we're bringing laptops to type on, that we bring them charged. So I wanted to make sure and mention that.

So let's come out and see each other, and have some more WriMo fun! I would especially love to see all of you that haven't been able to meet us at BAM on Monday and Thursday nights.

So don't forget! Saturday at Stone Soup, 11 until 2!

See ya then!

Nonny

PS - their menu is on their website, http://www.stonesoupbooks.net/StoneSoup_cafe.php, so you can get a feel for what they serve and how much it costs.
Augusta County Wrimos -- Take Note!

Hey everyone! Thanks to all of you that came out for the kickoff meeting at the Augusta County Public Library. That was a lot of fun, and I'm glad to have met you!

NOW comes the fun part: Write-Ins!

We have write-ins scheduled for Mondays and Thursdays at the brand new Books-A-Million in Waynesboro, from 6 until 9 PM both nights, each week, for the rest of this month (except for Thanksgiving Day, naturally). If you don't know how to get to the store, you can message me. It's off Exit 94, and is located in the Target Shopping Center. The manager was very excited to hear that we wanted to meet there! So, we're on for Mondays and Thursdays.

ALSO, I would like to challenge you all to Word Wars on one night each week. I would like to make it Wednesday nights, or Friday nights, whichever you prefer. (Or I could schedule them on both nights, and you could pick whichever one you might like to do). A word war is simply this: you agree to start at a certain time, and end at a certain time, and then see who comes up with the most words during that time frame. The neat thing about this is, you can do it from home, and just log in to private message your "word war" word count to everyone else in our group.

So let me know what you think about the word wars, and try to make it to the write-ins if you can.

Talk to you all soon!

Nonny (Michelle)

----------

Charlottesville HALFWAY POTLUCK on November 15th

On Saturday November 15 it will be HALFWAY! To keep everybody going, we're having a potluck dinner in the WriterHouse kitchen at 6pm, then writing until 9pm for whomever wants to stay. So please, bring a casserole or "covered dish" (if you're from the midwest) or a dessert or a salad or side dish to share. We have coffee and tea.

Tonight's write-in was great! Lots of tap-tap-tap sounds on the keyboards. Everybody was really productive. Let's keep it going.

Introducing Your Waynesboro/Staunton POC

LaMishia and I would like to introduce you to our very first Point of Contact (POC) for the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia!

A Nonny Mouse has courageously volunteered to represent the greater Waynesboro/Staunton area. As your POC, A Nonny Mouse will be organizing local meet-ups and write-ins. She will also make sure your local events are posted to the region's Calendar. Our hope is that by having a POC close to home, you will feel more connected to your region and be able to participate in NaNo related activities even though you may be far from the region's headquarters. And now a little bit about your POC: (cue Dating Game theme music)

A Nonny Mouse discovered NaNoWriMo last year and made a home for herself on the Newbie forums. If you head over there you still might find her lurking about on occasion. But Nonny Mouse is no longer a newbie. This second year Wrimo enjoyed the experience so much last year that she plans to continue NaNoWriMo..."forever!" So don't expect her to go anywhere soon, she is in the for the long haul. A teacher by profession, Nonny Mouse has found a new love in writing and hopes to meet Wrimos in her area that share the same passion.

We could not be more excited for our Southern Shenandoah Valley Wrimos! So if you are in the greater Waynesboro/Staunton area and would like to introduce yourself to your new POC, this is the place to do it! Post a note to say hello. She will be checking in over the next few days to say hello and get things heading in the right direction.

Happy Noveling!

Introducing Your JMU POC!

LaMishia and I would like to introduce you to yet another Point of Contact (POC) for the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia!

Arrowsforpens, Arrows for short, has courageously volunteered to represent JMU Wrimos. As your POC, arrowsforpens will be organizing JMU meet-ups and write-ins. She will also make sure your events are posted to the region's Calendar. Our hope is that by having a POC on campus, you will feel more connected to your region and be able to participate in NaNo related activities even though you may be far from the region's headquarters. And now a little bit about your POC: (cue Dating Game theme music)

Although Arrowsforpens had to be gently coaxed into volunteering for the position of JMU POC, she has already started spreading the word about NaNoWriMo even before her introduction thread was posted! She has recruited one Newbie and is working on another! Arrows is an art history major and a junior at JMU with a history of swing dancing and archery (hence the name I presume.) From her bio: "Besides noveling (duh :D), I like history, arts of various kinds, cats, musicals, and the word sanguine. This year's challenge: I will be writing completely sans caffeine. Crazy, I know. Should be fun." We wish you luck at Java City Arrows!

We could not be more excited for our JMU Wrimos! So if you are a student, professor, JMU staff or a friend of a JMU Wrimo and would like to introduce yourself to your new POC, this is the place to do it! Post a note to say hello. She will be checking in over the next few days to say hello and get things headed in the right direction.

Happy Noveling!

Your Co-MLs Susan & LaMishia

P.S. One last thing...if you happen to be in the Harrisonburg area and not connected with JMU, would you please consider becoming a POC yourself? I am sure there are other Wrimos both on campus and off who would be interested in meeting at off campus locations and perhaps a few joint write-ins or meet-ups with JMU can be scheduled. Send me a NaNoMail if you are interested!

Your favorite excerpt so far...

So at this point we should all be getting a good ways into our novels right? Has anyone written anything so far that they have found extraordinarily amusing, interesting, well written, or just plain strange?

Entertain your fellow Valley Wrimos!

Post the "Best Bit Yet" from your novels.

Here is mine:

The gorge suddenly widened out into a broad, flat valley, large enough to support a small growth of cedars. Beneath their reaching boughs, someone had kindled a large fire, and it threw strange shadows all around the little valley. Seated on the ground next to the fire was the small boy Tiriak and his father had seen preparing for the ceremony that morning. He was weeping loudly, and cowering in terror before a hooded figure that was more than a little familiar to Tiriak. Two other cowled figures stood on either side of the boy, each holding long, intricately carved staffs. Tiriak froze, and watched in dread as the smaller man stood over the cowering boy.

'You covenanted with us, at the cost of your very soul that you would obey your orders without question. And now you dare to question us? Have you forgotten so soon, the power of the Servants?" Gesturing his hand theatrically towards the fire, he muttered a few words and the flames leapt higher and changed color. They now burned an eerie purplish glow, giving the clearing the appearance of being bathed in blood. The boy on the ground screamed, his voice filled with terror. Tiriak felt frantic. He had to do something to help the boy, to get him out of the clearing before the menacing figures hurt him, or worse. He felt around his feet until he found a fist sized stone, round and smooth. He picked it up, and careful not to expose himself to the light, threw it with all his might at the far side of the clearing. It flew silently through the dark, then landed with a splash in the stream at the far end of the clearing. All four figures in the clearing froze, their heads immediately drawn in that direction. The small man gestured to one of the larger figures, then in the direction of the sound and he silently disappeared from the firelight. Tiriak knew the odds were now as good as they were going to get, and that he had to act now or never. He crept out into the clearing, keeping in the darkness at the edge for as long as possible, then when he was as close as he could get he sprinted full speed towards the fire. All three were still staring off into the darkness, wondering what the noise was and none of them heard his approach. At the last second he launched himself through the air and planted a shoulder directly in the center of the large man's back. Tiriak was not exceptionally large, but with the speed and surprise of his attack the man went sprawling into the fire. The small man screamed, a high pitched trill of pure fear and collapsed, covering his head with his hands. The boy lay on the ground in a fetal position, not seeing or caring what this new terror was, only wanting to become invisible. Tiriak rebounded from his attack and lost his own footing, landing on the soft ground with a grunt. He didn't take any time to recover however, and jumped right back up and grasping the boy by his belt began to drag him away from the fire and into the darkness. The boy hung like a rag doll, too terrified and confused to either assist or resist his sudden rescue. Tiriak paused for a moment, looking for a better hold on the boy. He knelt and grasped one wrist which he flung over his shoulder. Heaving his other shoulder beneath the boy's body he stood and began racing as best he could for the small ravine where he had entered the valley. Behind him he could hear the smaller man's shrill scream continuing, along with the injured curses of the larger man. Fortunately for them both, the other man had not yet returned. Tiriak made the corner and turned into the ravine, plunging himself suddenly in total blackness. He continued blindly, wishing to put as much distance between himself and the strange men as possible. More than once he tripped and fell on branches and rocks in the darkness, but still he kept on. The boy on his shoulders remained motionless and quiet, and Tiriak hoped that he was not injured, but dared not stop to check. Finally he felt the ground beneath his feet begin to rise and the moonlight returned to the quickly shrinking gully. When it was shallow enough, Tiriak climbed out and paused for the first time to get his bearings and make a plan.

Hello Wrimos!

Hello everyone. Two days down, twenty-eight to go. It's Day 3 and I have figured out that the best time to be on the NaNo site is about 4:30 in the morning! The rest of the day...forget about it! Makes it tough for posting word counts in the evening. Speaking of word counts we are in 111th place this morning. Seattle of course is in 1st yet again. They have several thousand participants to our 193 but our per Wrimo word count blows them out of the water!

I know there are some of you out there who haven't posted your word counts yet probably due to technical glitches. Here is a hint: last time I checked the word count validation and the little updater in the top right hand corner of your screen are not yet operable. The only place to update your word count is the "Edit Novel Info" link on the left hand side of your profile. There you can enter your word count and submit.

I hope a lot of you were able to get some writing done this weekend. If you are having troubles or need some encouragement let me know. You can also scan the NaNoWriMo forums for support.

Well that's it for me this morning. I need to get busy. Happy writing!

Introducing Your Lexington POC!

LaMishia and I would like to introduce you to yet another Point of Contact (POC) for the Shenandoah Valley region of Virginia!

Dressagegirl has courageously volunteered to represent the greater Lexington area. As your POC, dressagegirl will be organizing local meet-ups and write-ins. She will also make sure your local events are posted to the region's Calendar. Our hope is that by having a POC close to home, you will feel more connected to your region and be able to participate in NaNo related activities even though you may be far from the region's headquarters. And now a little bit about your POC: (cue Dating Game theme music)

Dressagegirl has a 16 year history of non-fiction freelance work for area newspapers and literary magazines. She is also no stranger to fiction writing. Although this is only her second year of NaNoWriMo she has been writing fiction since1994. She has participated in fiction writing workshops both online and ...imagine this...in person! Our very own elisgalpal will appreciate this next tidbit: last December dressagegirl won a Jericho fanfic contest and got some neat prizes. She has claimed several writing contest titles over the years including being the state winner for a contest sponsored by Family Circle. Dressagegirl has also been paid for several of her works while writing a variety of stories in urban fantasy, horror, and science fiction. How jealous am I?

We could not be more excited for our Lexington Area Wrimos to have such an experienced writer as your POC! So if you are in the area and would like to introduce yourself to your new POC, this is the place to do it! Post a note to say hello. She will be checking in over the next few days to say hello and get things headed in the right direction.

Happy Noveling!

Are there any Wrimos from Rappland??

I searched in vain for fellow Rappahannock-based wrimos on the Roll Call. Anybody out there? I am interested in rendez-vousing at the library, perhaps during the week. I'll check into the possibility of using computers during non-business hours. Also, the Stonewall Abbey could be a good meeting place (macs and wifi!) It's looking like my cranky laptop is not going to be viable this November, so I'm looking at locations that have computers available (my plan is to send myself emails).

Send me a quick email if you are interested!

One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time
