*waves* Me, me! I'm in Appleton.
(And if anyone plans to get together in Appleton or really, really close by, I'm game... I just don't have the money at the moment to pay for gas to go too far away. ^_^;;; )

I wouldn't mind getting together with people in or around Appleton, I can get there easily enough.
I know last year there were get togethers at Barnes & Nobel in Grand Chute.... Is anybody interested in it again this year?

Ah, for real?! I'm curious as to whether we know each other, and our super-secret internet identities hide the fact.

How's everyone doing on word count?
Is anyone else brand new to this like me?

Curious.
How does everyone keep themselves on track?
I have one goal every day, and that's 1,667 words, whether they are pure gold or pure garbage.
The toughest was day 2. I missed day 2 and 3 and got behind on my goals. I keep a spreadsheet of my daily progress so it shows how far I have to go each day. Right now at just under 10,500 I'm about 500 words ahead. I did that by writing about 5,500 words yesterday.
I just started chapter 3 (of 24 chapters).
I also have a couple of things I wonder about. What if I'm done writing in the book and it's nowhere near 50,000 words? Could I find enough information to stick in a side story somewhere in the middle to boost it to 50,000 words? Secondly what if I'm at 50,000 words on November 30th and I'm only on chapter 14. I don't know that without this contest I would necessarily finish it. I mean I do write an awful lot, but I have 7 other writing projects I'm trying to finish. I don't want this to become a half-a$$ed attempt. I'd rather finish it, regardless of it's length. So I'm hoping it's over 50,000 words and that the discipline of forcing myself to write 1,667 words every day keeps me going after this contest is over with so I can actually finish the book in it's entirety, letting it finish when it wants to. Which is when I'm done writing chapter 24.
Anyone else have thoughts on all this?

I'm behind already as well. I'm probably only at 1400 words, but I keep getting distracted (Youmacon was the biggest one of them all) but I don't have to work the rest of the week, so I can hopefully catch up quickly!!!!
If anyone is still interested in getting together and discussing NaNo and all that, I'd still be up for it as well.

^_^ I mostly just keep kicking myself to write when I get behind. I tend to start out very well, fall behind in the middle, and then pick up the pace and pound out lots of high word count days toward the end of the month. This year I have a personal goal of 2500 words a day, no matter how far ahead I am, and except for today I've been doing pretty well sticking to it so far. ^_^ (Today was a day full of distractions... stupid video games.)
In terms of completeness vs. 50000 words:
The official rules say at least 50000 words, and nothing else matters for getting the title of winner, including readability and continuity. If you finish the story before that number, sticking a side story in would work, as would any sort of fleshing out that you can think of. The site doesn't care whether you have 50000 words of one well written story with no ridiculous jumps of logic where you inserted something that kinda sorta fits the story, but not really... or something else, so in the end it's up to you what you feel is right to do. I personally think as long as you can make them kinda flow together, then that should be just fine, but then... I tend to have the opposite problem. ^_^;;;
And yeah, the opposite is, again, up to you. As long as you have 50000 words, you can validate and consider yourself a winner. You could, of course, refuse to validate (and thus not count yourself as a winner) unless you finish the story. I choose to validate and continue writing after November is over. So really, it's up to you and what you want to do.

I stay on track by relying on a support group. Some of my most trusted friends and family members get what I write sent to them every day. If they do not get the required number of words, they write me back and lovingly give me a nudge. It works, and keeps me motivated.

Hey there!
I just found out about this from a friend... and even though I'm a week behind I think I'm gonna give it a try and see how far I can get :D Depending on how things go, I'll know if I'm interested in trying again next year, from the beginning!

I live in Pickett, so a meet in Oshkosh or Fond du Lac would workout better than B&N in Grand Chute would....and the store would distract me. I saw a few are Oshkosh/Fond du lac anyone want to meet and have a support chat? Ideas as to where?
As for me I am a newbie this year, homeschooling parent of 3, two teens, and a tween. Son is writing too but isn't up to the pressure of NaNoWriMo this year, though we discussed it.
Doing a Young Adult book, but got discouraged and almost started from scratch this week, so that is why I am so far behind. Hoping to get some more done this weekend as hubby and boys are gone on a Scout campout...just me and daughter.
Good luck to all, and look forward to chatting more.

Why don't we meet sometime next week at the Perkins on 9th st in Oshkosh. It is just off the highway and easy to find? Say Wednesday at 4 PM?

Keep in mind people work, so 4pm may be quite a bit too early.

4 was a little early, as I don't get away from work until almost 4:30, but 6 works.
Should there be a sign on the table saying something like "NaNoWriMo" so we know where to find each other in Perkins? Granted it isn't that big of a restaurant but I have an awful time finding people....

I would be down for an Oshkosh meet-up at Perkins, unless anyone wants to meet somewhere in Menasha or Appleton sometime as well?
Also, are there any write-ins in the area any time soon?

Wednesday, 11/14 at 6pm Perkins in Oshkosh?????
First is this a definite? Also I would call and be sure we could get some space?
Another idea would be the Coffee Shop at Basic Books, they usually are more quiet. I used to do a lot of meetings there. Just a thought. If this is a set deal someone email me ~> sassylucylootoo@yahoo.com and I will do my best to be there.
Otherwise what is everyone's schedule like for next week?????? Are weekends better? I can get to B&N on a weekend, my family will spend hours reading somewhere in the store.
Come on we can pull off at least one Fox Valley meet...I'm a NaNoWriMo newbie and could use a pep talk.
And if anyone wants to be buddies please add me.
