God I am having such a hard time categorizing my novel. I once thought it was chicklit, but it isn't even about a girl...nor is it even romantic?
It is about a young man enrolls in a literature elective to finally fulfill his undergraduate requirements and finish get his college degree. He enrolls in the the only class that doesn't conflict with his schedule. Little did he know that it's actually Austen101. Ironic for a guy who never even watched a Jane Austen movie, yet alone read one.
"I am Jane Austen" is a novel that shows us that there is a little Jane Austen in all of us, even if you are a guy.
Does it sound mainstream to you?

Sounds very "The Jane Austen Book Club" ~ which, yes, I'd say is mainstream.

The question on everyone's mind seems to be, "What is "mainstream ficiton." I've looked up several opinions and so yes, I'd say that your novel fits in to that category. I think mainstream is basically a spot for books that don't really fall in to a defined category. It sounds promising. I can honestly say I'd pick it up and read it. Good luck!

Haha. It must be good that i haven't read the Jane Austen Book Club then...hopefully it will be very different.
I am so glad you people like the plot. it just came to me while I was showering. i am a big austenite and i can honestly say that i am emma. i wondered if any guy thought that about themselves and hence the outline of chapter one was born.
gee. wanna know how obsessed i am? I even thought of the cover. sad right?
How about you others? Does it sound appealing? Would you pick it up in a bookstore?

Sounds interesting. I never thought of a guy as Jane Austin... but then again, I always thought I was a bit like Heathcliff (That's a Bronte character, I know...) and I'm a woman.
As far as I can tell, mainstream is the catch all of every fiction book ever written... you can toss anything into mainstream fiction and it would fit... except maybe those things like true high fantasy or extreme horror or honest to goodness mystery.
I'm writing some kind of story along the lines of the garden of eden except it's set in the modern day with some fantasy elements and comedy thrown in for good measure... plenty of parallel stuff to play with in my NaNo effort this year. I wouldn't classify it as Inspirational / Religious or a comedy... it's just fiction. Thus... mainstream.
happy writing and just write it!
