My project for this year is about the Speed of Now, mostly about dreams. Your mind is defined by infinity. It is mostly classified in horror because of the appearances and behaviors of the minds/dreams and the MC's history/personality. How do you describe your mind and your dreams? Does your head ever hurt for no reason? Do you ever feel a sense of nothingness, pain, or extreme...anything? In other words, do you ever think your mind is leaving and coming? Another thing, how do you propose I could add a dash more horror to my story?

I'm mostly curious about the last question.

Wow, that was a crappy post. Okay, let's start over.

So the project is in a dreamy type world. How would you combine dreams and horror?

I was wondering the same sort of thing, as my prolouge sort of thingy is a dream. I can't think of anything besides taking a fear of the character and making it enormous (ex. giant spiders). I got nothing :(

My story is about a guy who finds himself caught up in a type of mythic cult. I'm trying to make it more creepy by keeping the action myseriously menacing and suspensful rather than abject blood and guts horror (though I am planning to use quite a bit of blood once I get going). For the meantime though, I've plotted out a dream sequence where the MC is trapped in a maze and keeps catching glimpses of the villian and hearing distant screams of the girl he's trying to protect. Have you ever had one of those dreams where you're trying to run but can't, or trying to scream but no sound will come out. They're the scariest nightmares, I think, so I think incorporating that type of helplessness into your dream sequence might help with the dash of horror you're looking for.

I had a dream last night that is sort of perfect for linking dreams and horror- in a common, semi-cliched way.

In the dream, my friend Alex, her mom, her little sister, and I were on a cruise ship (for some reason). It had a garden in one section, with a room next to it with armchairs and stuff. However, there was a window in ever wall of the room, and only one door, in from the dining area. There was a guy with a bomb, and Alex's little sister wanted to go up and look at it, not knowing that it was bad. Her mom had gone to ask someone about what was going on, so Alex and I chased her little sister into this room. The guy with the bomb yelled in through the windows that if he saw anyone but Alex in the room, he would set the bomb off. Then he said he loved her. (He was an adult, 30s or so, and she's 15, just so you know.) So I was holding her little sister close to me to stop her from going in front of the windows, and this guy was circling so he could see from all angles. I found a place behind this one armchair where you were safe from all of the windows, but then he said that no one had left through the door because it hadn't opened (it was in plain sight of the windows), so he knew we were still in there with Alex. Then he said he was setting off the bomb, and then the timer started counting off, getting louder and louder.

Turns out the "timer" was the alarm on my Nintendo DS, which I use because it's louder than my actual alarm clock. But it was freaky. So if you need a scary nightmarish thing that actually ends up happening....that could spark some ideas, maybe?

And about the "thinking your mind is leaving and coming"....that happens to me a lot. I'll be thinking, and then someone will touch my arm or something and I'll get this feeling like my mind is becoming solid in my head again or something, and I feel semi-lightheaded. So if that's what you meant?

If you have the chance, you should look up something called hypnagogia.

It's one of the most frightening experiences of my life.

I can't describe it other than to say this intense feeling of evil comes over you. Then it feels like all the hope is being sucked right out of you.

Back when I had no idea what it was I likened it to feeling like I had just gone to Hell.

It's a strange sleeping disorder that, when you know what's going on, can be "fought off" for lack of a better term. Just knowing what you're going through goes a long way in not experiencing any of the strange effects. But it's really something else if you don't know what's happening.
