Cornish member?

Hi, new Nanor here. Anyone going to throw rocks at me if I join you lot from my rather out of the way home in Mount Hawke, Cornwall? I promise not to talk too much about pasties...

I write fantasy, sci-fi, horror and a bit of crime with more enthusiasm than real talent and would like the support of a localish group; guess I could get up to Exeter quite easily.

Well, I don't know about you lot, but I have been asked "When is your novel in the shops?" a few times over the last week or so!

As if writing a novel in 30 days isn't accomplishment enough, eh?

Whatever your festive experience, I hope you all held your heads a little higher this year knowing that you are officially prize-winning novelists!

Happy holidays, everyone. See you early in 2008 for our NaNo celebrations!

TGIO party planning

Hi everyone,

I don't know about you lot, but I'm starting to get bogged down in festive events. We could still meet up soon, but the chances of finding a slot when we're all available between now and Christmas are... slim.

A few people have suggested that January might be a better bet? It gives us more time to work on an excerpt to share, plus it will be something to look forward to during the long dark nights when the festivities have finished.

Please list any weekends in January that you can't make, and we'll see what we come up with. I may not be around on the weekend of the 26th, but can be flexible.

Thank you!
Where's your novel going this week?

Discussions at the write-in today showed that these pesky novels of ours have a habit of taking us off to places we weren't expecting, which made me think it might be fun to compare notes as we enter the final week.

If you fancy joining in, list 3 things that you have planned for your novel before the end of NaNo.
Then when you win (note when, not if!), please report back and tell us how many of these actually happened/ what happened instead.

Here's mine:-

1) My female skeleton is going to get all her flesh back overnight. (Too predictable?!)
2) My main character is going to get arrested for something petty as a wake-up call.
3) A much-loved treehouse is going to meet a sorry end.

What are you going to make your characters do this week? Do you think they'll oblige, or have they developed preferences of their own?
TGIO Party - UPDATE

The plan is to have a relaxing late lunch in Exeter on the afternoon of Sunday 2nd December.

Who's up for it? What times would suit people? Does anyone want a lift?

Any good suggestions for venues would be welcome, too. Most of the chain-operated places (Nandos, Ask, La Tasca and the like) seem to want £5 deposits per head as we are getting into Christmas party territory.

In the meantime, I will keep on schmoozing random restaurant managers whenever I get a chance...

Keep the date for now, and please indicate whether you'll be coming along! I reckon we deserve a good scran-up!

It's a beautiful sunny day here in Exeter and I'm bleary-eyed, with a daft smile on my face.

It was truly fantastic to watch people skipping into 50K last night, I'm so inspired.

And to all those who didn't make it to the official target - congratulations for starting to write your novel. You've gone from being a "One day..." novelist to someone who has actually started to do something about it. That's massive.

So here I am, with a sunny Saturday completely free to do as I wish.

Hmm now, let me see... laundry or paperwork?
Write-in Thursday 29th Nov - ***CANCELLED***

Hi all,

Despite the great turn-out today, I am conscious that on the evening of the 29th, novelists will be falling into one of three broad categories - those who have decided not to continue this year, those who have finished already, and those who are relying on every last second to get themselves across the 50K line.

I belong to the latter group!

Please can you indicate here if you have made plans to come to the write-in on the 29th? If people think that the journey to the library will actually reduce critical writing time, then we might be better off thanking Exeter Central for letting us use the room, but letting them have it back to make some money out of!

If anyone is relying on an event this Thursday, we can always meet in the reference library as I expect numbers will be quite small.

Thanks folks!
Musing on music

This came up during one of the online clinic hour chats - and reminded me that last year, I had started to make myself a motivational and NaNo-specific playlist!

So, what music do you usually write to, for NaNo, generally?

Are there any songs with either titles which scream "NaNo" to you, or who despite having non-NaNo titles, have lines which sum NaNo up perfectly?

*******

I usually just stick my iTunes library on shuffle for writing, I have to say! I wanted to make a good writing playlist for this year's NaNo, but never got round to it!

As for NaNo song titles or lyrics, how about:

- "Beggin' " - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons
- "I'm Not Sleeping' " - Counting Crows
- "I'm Not Sleepin' " - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
- "A Long December" - Counting Crows (for anyone thinking of editing!)
- "Here I Go Again" - both Whitesnake and OK Go
- "It's All Been Done" - Barenaked Ladies
- "Too Little Too Late" - Barenaked Ladies (hopefully not!)
- "I Wil Survive" - both Enrique Iglesias and Gloria Gaynor
- "Miniature Disasters" - KT Tunstall (again, hopefully not!)
- "Suddenly I See" - KT Tunstall (hopefully, yes! Inspiration!)
- "There'll Be Some Changes Made" - Fosse soundtrack
- "Now We Are Free" - Gladiator soundtrack
- "Busy Little Bee" - Gladiator soundtrack
- "Cry Me A River" - Justin Timberlake (more hopefully not!)
- "Never Again" - Justin Timberlake (and more hopefully not!)
- "Because We Can" - Fatboy Slim (Moulin Rouge soundtrack)
- "Hold On Hope" - Guided By Voices
- "Changes" - Butterfly Boucher and David Bowie (Shrek 2 soundtrack)
- "I Need Some Sleep" - Eels (Shrek 2 soundtrack) (lol)
- "Something To Sleep To" - Michelle Branch
- "Sweet Misery" - Michelle Branch
- "Goin' Out Of My Head" - Dr. John (Three To Tango soundtrack)

You know, those are just from my iTunes library (well apart from the Gloria Gaynor version of "I Will Survive") - I have a LOT of songs with "sleep" (or lack thereof) in!

I'll have to list ones with lyrics later, after listening to some.

What can you guys add?
----------
BFS goals - http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1075131
