Hi Everyone!
I'm Mary Z. from NSB and am starting to panic-not only about writing but how to get word count.
Could someone tell me how to paste and scramble excerpt in VERY simple language? Or, direct me to info.
I'm not only new to Nanowrimo but also this kind of site, e.g. how to use forums to find things.
Thank you and Good Writing, Everyone!

Hi Mary from New Smyrna Beach! I'm Bruce from Port Orange! Hello, there...
I'm assuming by word count you mean: how to submit your novel nightly (or weekly, or at the end of the month) to verify word count. From Chris Baty's email to us ML-types:
On November 1: Begin writing. At this point, you'll be able to begin updating your word count on the Author Info tab of the Edit Profile page. You can do this on the honor system by just typing in the number, or you can paste the whole book in and let our robots count it for you. If you paste your book, please scramble it first, using instructions in our FAQ. You can also post an excerpt of your book in the same area of the Edit Profile page.
Clear enough? Scrambling is simple, tho I'll have to do it again to remember how. I'm no techie, and I did it last year! One important thing to remember: your submission needs to be saved to .txt format to submit. Text format is the only format the robots at NaNoWriMo understand. To save in .txt format: Click on FILE on your taskbar, then SAVE AS. It will show whatever format the program you're using to type uses, but you can click on the little 'down arrow' (V) and highlight .txt, then click SAVE. At that point it's ready to submit, by following the instructions above.
Good luck, Mary, and don't forget our write-ins on Sunday mornings at 10:00 at the ISB Panera, if you can make it. We have lots of helpful people there.
~Bruce

Hi Mary!
If the site works the way it has in years past, you don't have to worry about scrambling until you're ready to verify that you've "won." Up to then, just go into your profile and update your count manually by typing in the number.
When you are ready to verify your 50,000 words, you do so by uploading a text file to the NaNo website and it counts words for you. Your novel is only there temporarily and then deleted, but some folks worry about their novels being copied somehow so if you're concerned, try this:
In your word processor, open the Find and Replace dialog box (usually Edit -> Replace).
In the Find section type a.
In the Replace section type x.
Click "Replace All"
Do the same for all the vowels, or whatever letters strike your fancy. You'll end up with gibberish but still in countable words.
If you have Microsoft Word, try this:
Open the Find and Replace dialog box.
Click the "More" button to expand the box.
Check the "Use Wildcards" checkbox.
In the "Find What" field, put this: a-zA-Z0-9
In the "Replace With" field, put this: a
Click "Replace All"
This will replace EVRYTHING with "a".
Save your file under a new name as a plain text file, and then upload it to the verifier. Done!
Hope that helps.

Thanks, Chris! I knew that all along! LOL
See, Mary? I told you we had plenty of helpful folks around!

I have been checking the site on and off, and I dont see the option to upload the novel for the robots to verify word count... I checked the faq's and it said it should be under My NaNo somehwere, but...I'm still not seeing it...?
I want to make sure that my wordprocessor's word count matches what the NaNoBots say I have so that I can make adjustments if I need to.
Thanks for any help.

That service isn't in place right now, it's being held to keep the server running faster the first few days or so. FRom the post on the front page:
"Russ is working on getting the stats pages up now. Also, the only way to update your word count at the moment is to head to Edit Profile--->Author Info and just type it in. We normally have a cut-and-paste word-counter and auto-updater there that you can use to get an official count, but Russ turned it off so the site would be as fast as possible for opening day."

Hi Everyone!
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. Thank you for helping me get started- just finished putting Chapter 1 through the word count.. It Worked!!!
Between getting a new laptop and coming up with at least a few characters to start, I am very late but will plow ahead and see how far I get.
Thanks again for your help. I'm a little less nervous, thanks to you!
