I'm from Hay River. I'm kinda living in Alberta right now, but kinda not. Can't wait to be back home full time.

So how's the weather?

The Northern Hawk Owl (surnia ulula) is a crow sized owl that acts more like a hawk than an owl. Unlike most owls, it is diurnal, which means it hunts during the day. This owl is not afraid of humans, and will let you get very close to it. Although

OK, so there's a few of us. I know Jack is on here somewhere, too. He's from Whitehorse.

We're probably a little far flung to get together for coffee, but at least we know there are others out there.

How's everyone doing on their novel? Is the north the setting for anyone? Mine's a small town somewhere in the north.

I'm in Yellowknife, definitely north of 60 here! =)

My story is not set in the north, but one of my characters has flash backs to when she did live in the arctic as a child, specifically the northern lights & walking on an iceroad.

I'm finding the setting really sets the pace and the characters in a way I didn't expect. I'm used to writing plays, so this is a new experience for me. In plays, you leave so much for the actors and the director. Here, every element is in your control. novel writing is exhausting business...

my name is (not) "Jack," and i'm writing in whitehorse.

mine's set in a city in the north - coffee shops, government offices, restaurants, bars, cruising parks (there's gotta be one somewhere). i've built it onto the local music scene with details i've picked up from my freelance job and my partner's wednesday night jam. the pacing is pretty intense, but then, so's living in the north, at least in my experience.

my first story line was supposed to be an alcoholic ex-newfoundland who goes back home, so the setting was supposed to be partially whitehorse but mostly gander, nl. that was too depressing, so i had him meet a young musician and now they're on a journey through the underworld (the ultimate south/outside). so keeping with a northern setting is much more inspiring.

and as for novels vs. plays - very liberating. no worries about keeping the cast down to 3 or 4, being limited to a bare stage (or whatever the actors can do with 4 folding chairs and sheet), or having to deal with actors, directors, producers, set designers, dramaturgs, ugh. writing a novel feels natural.
