I know there are a lot of NaNo overachievers, so my suggestion is - why not let them set the goal for their word-count bars? I remember it being a feature on the Young Writer's site last year, and I thought it was great for kids who could not conceivably write 50K in a month, but I think it could work in the opposite direction for the over-achieving adults who don't see the bar as full until 100K is hit. (Obviously, I'm not suggesting the end-of-the-month validators should change, then it wouldn't be NaNoWriMo. ^_^)

I think this was discussed at some point this year; It might have been before the forum wipe. Hard to remember. :)

Anyway, I think the reasoning behind not allowing it for NaNoWriMo is that they didn't want people who only wanted to reach 50k to feel like their achievements were less... it wouldn't take long for people to start bragging about "winning" the "real NaNoWriMo".

Personally, I wouldn't mind... as you can see, hitting 50k is not a problem for me. :) And this year I do have a 100k goal, for two books.

I think this is the topic you are thinking of...

NaNo 2006(win): "Children of the Stars"
NaNo 2007(win): "Darkness Falls"

Yep, that's the one! I knew it hadn't been discussed much this year, but it HAS been discussed in the past. Thanks for finding that!

The Word Count Widgets allow for a configurable goal this year...

Up until today, everyone with more than 50k words looked to me like they had green dots, not bars. I thought that was kind of cool and wondered if they would get two dots at 100k, etc. But it must've been a quirk of my browser to not load the graphics right - only getting the end bits and omitting the part in between. I think that while everyone should get a purple bar at 50k, thereby winning official nanowrimo, it'd be extra motivation for the overachievers if we could also work for green dots.

The green dots were actually a bug. :) They were supposed to be green bars, identical to the blue ones. :) It wasn't just your browser.

I know the green dots were technically a bug, but I liked them! lol ....... Maybe I'll make my own green dot to display when I reach 50k.

There you go! No reason you can't have a dot for each 50k you reach in your signature. :)

Isn't the work around fix to make a second ID and try for another 50k? As an added bonus, you can make yourself a buddy, and you can reply to your own questions, and you'll probably be ready for that aroudn the fifteenth anyway. Right?

Maybe for every 10k you get over 50 you get a green dot. It would be cool.

The bar graph on the Author Profile page calibrated to whatever count your reached. The the top of the graph was whatever your highest count was. I thought that was great!

I can handle the bar just showing the goal, what I enjoyed the most was seeing my count graph RECALIBRATE!

Keep that feature for next year.

Last year the chart stopped at a certain point, went off the chart, then stopped growing. Yuck.

Check the graphs of the high achievers and see the difference!

LOVED IT!!
