This isn't related to a WIP but I saw it on an online comment recently and it reminded me of the fact that I've never really understood why they do this, but I don't feel right asking the only gay guy I know why they do this (it was his partner who said it). Trouble is, it's bugging me and probably will until I find out why. Does anyone know?

Ugh, I don't believe it, the site has kicked me out of the Character & Plot Realism forum and posted this question in the wrong place TWICE! I give up! Still, if anyone knows the answer I'd appreciate it.

From my understanding as a lesbian, it's just a reference to how effeminate some gay men can be. Not all gay men call each other "she" or "Mary" or "Miss Thang", but a lot do. A few are offended by it. So go figure!

Also, some gay men do drag, so that may be part of it as well. When speaking to a man in drag (gay, straight or otherwise), it is customary to refer to him as "she".

In short, it's just part of the very colorful queer culture.

Peace out, namaste, and write on!

Thanks, I did wonder if it was related with the effeminate thing but I wasn't sure. With drag, of course, it makes sense, but that definitely wasn't the case in my example. The guy I know can be a bit effeminate sometimes but not in an in-your-face kind of way. I think he said he wore a dress once for a joke. Someone dared him to wear a dress for one of the office charity fancy dress days and he would have done it but the managers said no because he was covering reception! :-P

There seems to be a thing recently where guys get it into their heads that it would be fun to wear a dress for a fancy dress night of drinking - my straight brothers have both done that for a dare and it's hilarious! ;-)
