So, I don't know if people are still posting and/or reading, but I have a mini-problem. I have a great idea for a novel about an undead vampire teenage girl, I was thinking about a 17-18 year old. Do you think it is a bad idea to write a book with some mature subject matter (*wink**wink*) where the MC is only 18? Most of the ones I've read have had like, single mother types. Anyway, please let me know - if there's anyone out there...

Doesn't matter RAW...Kushiel's latest are all 13, 14 and 15. Now 17 and 18 in the latest book and have been well tried and tested. Jacqueline Carey works her MMC's and FMC's very well and most believable. There isn't any reason you can't as well.

If you are worried about sending the wrong message, make it an 18 year old, it still is considered the teen years, and being on the cusp of adulthood, the emotions of that group is often more mercurial.

In my experience, if you have anything explicit, 18 is still a little young for publishers to consider. Mature subject matter is okay. It's not as if the YA market doesn't include sex. I mean, check out Gossip Girls. But for an erotic publisher, it's unlikely they'd be willing to look at it.

Recently in the news where I live, teens have been sending around explicit photos of each other. One girl sent a dirty video clip of herself to her boyfriend. He's been charged with being in possession of child porn, despite both him and his girlfriend being 16. You might want to think about that when writing.

It's another matter entirely when it's pictures of real people. That falls under the whole age of consent thing, which changes from state to state (it's 17 in New York). Erotic photos of someone under that age are child porn. Having sex with someone under that age (even if you're the same age) is statutory rape. And so on and so forth.
Fiction, from what I understand, doesn't fall into that category, since fake people can't consent.
I think someone who's around 18 would be believable, since a lot of sexual activity goes on in that time frame. I can't vouch for how the erotic industry would view it, though, simply because I don't know.
