Extreme Guilt of the ML Kind (or) Calling all Polk County Floridians!

(As moved from Out of the Box: Off Topic)

Greetings and Saulutations!

I figured I'd stick this in the off topic section because it seemed off topic. Who've ever heard of a possible ML looking for a group of local writers? Not me!

I'm 19 and I've done Nano since I was 15. I know the excitement and adrenalin of writing fifty thousand words in thirty days! I look forward to doing it every year....Let me just point out that I'm never plagued by word count anxiety.

My region has never been an actual region because there has never been anyone to step up to take on the ML duties of the United States: Florida: Polk County (or maybe name it Central Florida region). I would love to step up and take on those duties. But not this year.

I was going to be ML last year when I turned 18, but I talked myself out of it (in addition to starting my own business). And I was going to do it this year, but, again, I talked myself out of it and just generally procrastinated at a whole lot of RL stuff until I couldn't see myself possibly doing the required ML tasks for November 2008 and complete the 50k challenge.

Thusly, I'm feeling slighty guilty for all (if there are any) the Heart of Florida Nanowrimo writers. I know that I'm not the only person who could be an ML for this region. But I really, really want to at sometime in the future. I enjoy volunteering, and I know that I'd get a kick out of contacting places to do write-ins.

I conclude with the following questions: Are there any Nanoers in Polk County besides me? Would you want a ML closer than Tampa or Vero Beach next year? YES? NO? PLEASE WITH CHEESE?

----------
"Give up on spell check, give up on grammar, give up on sleep, give up on a balanced diet, give up on it all... but never give up on hope." ~EA Bowen
Tavares Writers?

Hey everyone!

I'm the Ocala/Marion County ML, but I have a writer that lives in Tavares and is looking for a chapter or other WriMos to meet with. Anyone out there? : ) We love having as many writers as possible in our Ocala/Marion County group, but with the price of everything, especially gas, we would like to provide authors with a support group closer to home.

Please post here if you are from Tavares or the area and would like to get together for write-ins. Thanks!

Get ready to WRITE!

On Saturday, the adventure called NaNo begins. The rules say that you can’t start writing your brand-new novel until then.

BUT…you can plan your brand-new novel before then. What does planning mean, I hear you say.

Develop characters. Draw maps of your new world. Develop a plot. Decide to wing it and don’t do anything until 12:01am, Saturday, November 1.

All of this is fine, acceptable and allowed. If you start writing before November, then you’ll never know if you could have, would have, written 50,000 words in the month of November.

We all start at the same point, at the same point in time. We all hear the starting bell (or the alarm in the morning) on November 1, and the fingers start flying. Maybe we have an idea for a novel that’s been simmering for a while. Maybe we just got an idea we want to play around with, to see if it could go somewhere. Maybe we heard something on the news that sparked a “What if . . .” and we want to run with it, or incorporate it into something else as a sub-plot.

However we start, we all have the same goal: Get to midnight local time on November 30, with at least 50,000 words under our tired, cramping fingers. It’s doable; 1,667 words per day and you’ve aced it. Can’t write every day? Double or triple up on the days you can write. My personal best for one day’s writing is between 4,000-5,000 words – that’s a lot of seat time, and I did it two days in a row to get caught up on a weekend. It’s so much easier to write a little every day, in theory. The reality is that life intervenes, and sometimes you just can’t.

Writing every day keeps your momentum going, and the story in the forefront of your mind. I know it’s hard to write every day; I can’t write every day to my goal of 1,667 words. But if you write for at least 15 minutes every day – jot notes in a notebook if you can’t get to your computer – you’ll find the flow of the story is easier to get into when you can sit down for a bigger chunk of writing.

I’ve posted all of the information about the Kick-Off party; write-ins scheduled for Melbourne, Merritt Island, Port St. Lucie and Vero Beach, and the TGIO party on the Google Calendar at http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=amp2nd5usmfd7v4gqm4kug9vos%40gr..., or access it through the Vero Beach region in the forums.

A word about regions: if you have selected Florida::Elsewhere as your home region, take a look at the Florida region list to see if there’s a region close to you. I don’t mean close in the 10 miles away sense; I mean it in the it’s-closer-than-anything-else sense. My first year, Palm Beach was my home region, and I live in Vero Beach. Traveling down for the occasional write-in was fine on the weekends, but I couldn’t do it during the week. Meeting the writers down there made me feel more connected to the process, especially since it was my first year. I went to the Kick-Off party, and three or four of the write-ins. I went to the TGIO party. This is such a huge endeavor, and meeting the other people who are undertaking it with you keeps you going when you feel that you just can’t write another word of this story that you now loathe. Why do regions matter? In the big scheme of things, they don’t. In the little scheme of things, they do, because they let the ML know how many people are participating in their region, and how many people they should order swag from. Did you know that HQ sends out something every year to the MLs to hand out to the people who come to the parties and write-ins? They do, we do, and I usually ask for the small size (25); this year I’ve got 28 who list Vero Beach as their home region. Great to see us growing and I know I’ll have enough for those who come out, but for next year I’ll know to order more.

Also, region selection helps your region in word wars, if you compete against another similar-sized region. I like to see where our region stacks up, especially considering the small size of Vero Beach. It covers a lot of ground, because I schedule write-ins for Port St. Lucie (St. Lucie county), Melbourne (Brevard county), and Vero Beach (Indian River county). One of the Brevard members has scheduled write-ins in Merritt Island; all of the info is on the calendar. Any of you can schedule a write-in; just let me or the ML for your new home region know, so they can post it on the Google Calendar.

NaNo is free to participants, but it’s not free to run. The Office of Letters and Light is a 501(c)3 non-profit, and they run NaNo and Script Frenzy. There is information on the website about how this came to be formed, but the upshot is that donations by participants are what make NaNo possible. If you can, donate something. There are Thank-you gifts associated with different levels of giving, and there is a tab on the left side of the “About” page that tells you how to donate if you’re broke (GoodSearch is one way – they donate a penny for every search on their search engine, donated to the charity of your choice – in this case, Office of Letters and Light, Oakland, CA).

If you have questions, let me or another ML know; we’ll get the answer for you, or find someone who has it.

Writing 50,000 words in 30 days is huge, but break it down into manageable chunks and it will get done.

Kissimmee

Alrighty, I know on the last board we had a bunch of people up for doing a meet up here in Kissimmee...I've been getting emails from other people interested as well.

How about everyone raises there hand to show who's up for a meetup? I think Erin suggested the new Starbucks on I-92.

*raises hand expectantly*
“Maybe he’s gay,” said Em innocently.
“Are you saying you look like a guy?”

Brevard County write-in

Since it seems like there are a lot of us in Brevard, and quite a few of us interested in write-ins, I would love to organize a write-in for Saturday, November 1. Melbourne is a nice central location, but if anybody else has other ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Hi,

I'm the Vero Beach ML, and have scheduled write-ins for PSL and Melbourne as well, since I think I'm the closest ML to those areas.

See the Vero Beach Regional Calendar for write-in info.

Calling all Highlands County Nano'ers!

I'm trying to figure out how many Highlands County writers would like to get together to write a couple times a week during November. We could meet at Brewsters - they are very supportive of writers there.

I'm planning a meeting for all us us sometime after October 20th. I'll try to keep you posted. Email me at bookwormlady@embarqmail.com if you're interested!!
Cast Members?

In search of other Disney cast members! Orlando is the closest region listed, but I'm doing the Disney College Program without a car, so getting out of Disney and the surrounding areas is pretty difficult. Anyone else in the same boat?
Calling all Writing Groups!

I posted this on the Orlando thread but figured it would work here too. I know with gas prices they way they are, we're all probably looking to stay as local as possible for our write-in events.

Do you have a local writing group you'd like to list? Is the group doing Nanowrimo and perhaps open to hosting write-ins? Let everyone know. Nanowrimo can be a great time to support your local writing community and even recruit some new members.

I'll get us started.

Who: Orlando Writing League
Membership: mostly crazed writers (published and unpublished) who tackle a variety of genres
Website: www.writerchai.com
Nano write location: Barnies Coffee and Tea at Sandlake Road and Orange Blossom Trail (across from the Florida Mall)
Proposed Nano write-in days: Tuesday evenings (6-9pm) and Saturday afternoons (TBD possibly until they kick us out)

We'll firm up the dates and times as we get closer to November. But we should be good to go with the location.

Tina Marie
Mount Eumavares

Alright, so there's no such place as Mount Eumavares. But there are such places as Mount Dora, Eustis, Umatilla, Tavares, and several other little towns and cities squished into northern Lake County, Florida. So here's a shout out to all other writers who frequent such places Lake Square Mall and can't go a week without driving down 441 and/or 19.
