Writing Group Sought

Hello everybody,

First of all, let's get it out in the open, I Failed last years Nanowrimeo. It was my first attempt, I got more or less precisely half way through the month and the book and then one night I suddenly thought of all the other things I could be doing with the time, as I cupped rice from the sack to the cooker. Chief amongst these things was studying for the JLPT test.

Anyway. I know this might be a bit of an abuse of this forum, but....is anyone in the Tohoku area interested in setting up a wriitng group, or is there one already out there? I just want to read other people's stuff, have my own read but mainly have some kind of extra motivation. let me know. Not sure how this all works so here's my e-mail...

Any Tokyo experts out there?

Part of my novel is set in late 1890s Tokyo. I have a character living in the foreign district--my only problems are 1) I can't find any information on what the district(s) were named 2) I don't know what these districts would have looked like--more Western, more Japanese, or a combonation between the two and 3) If I am just completely off base on any of this.

Any help whatsoever would be appreciated!

Question for English teachers in Japan

I really hope it's OK to post this here, even though it's a NaNo-themed board. I am currently teaching Japanese at a local high school and I was looking to maybe connect with some of you teaching English and see if anyone wanted to set up penpal relationships between our students. You can reply here or PM me, but my kids have expressed interest, so I thought I would try some other WriMos. Anybody interested?

I was just curious, seeing that so many people that are signed up from Japan are not even Japanese people. How did you get to living in Japan? And how did you find out where you wanted to live? Do you fit in in the neighborhood?

Misawa (Tohoku) Get Together/Write-In

I've decided to grab one other writing friend and go out to a place with a free-refills beverage bar tonight. Partly, I want this because I spend too much time on the forums or doing research (Scientology's HARD!)

So, for those who have the whimsy:

Join me from 5:30 PM tonight at the Misawa Cocos "California style" restaurant (next to McDonalds) you are invited to attend.

I'll bring pens and dollar-store notepads. Buddy'll bring a laptop computer. If we've got a good mascot picked (see the Japan Mascot thread) and I can find one, I'll bring one of those. In any case, look for two fairly dorky short-haired dudes who somehow radiate the raw sensuality and divine power that comes with being a budding novelist. (I'm still pumped from using the mouse.)

Feel free to join in! We can ignore each other or bounce ideas off each other as the desire strikes.

If we're lucky, it'll be an icky rainy night that will drive away all the people who would otherwise make the place crowded on Sunday night. ^_^

If it's productive, we can even make this a regular weekend thing.

I think I am the only one here in Tohoku, though I think I've roped at least one of my coworkers to try NaNoWriMo this year. If anyone's interested in doing a meetup in Sendai (where I am) or some other easy-and-cheap-to-get-to city in Tohoku, please let me know! I'm free on Sundays and Mondays, and I've got a Saturday or two off in November as well :o)

Japan NaNoWriMo Mascot?

Seattle NaNoWriMos have a mascot! It's a rubber duck, and if you entered a Seattle coffeeshop and saw writers with rubber ducks you'd know they were kindred and could join in!

They also incorporate it into their novels. (This year it's a duck on a hat that everyone incorporates.)

I want one for Japan.

It should be easy to obtain, Japanese, not necessarily brand-name, and not food (so we can bring it in to cafes without making the staff uncomfortable.)

Maybe it should be something so ubiquitous that you can get it at 100yen stores.

But what?

Meetup in Yokohama/Tokyo area?

I know there are at least two of us in Yokohama who are Nano'ing right now, and I have a hard time believing out of the enormous foreign population of this general area, we're the only ones! If you're in the general Tokyo/Yokohama/Kanagawa-ken area and are interested in meeting up, let's plan something. There are so many cute writing-friendly cafes in Tokyo that it seems a waste to not take advantage of the potential inspiration. Any takers?

Sendai write-in!

I've mentioned this in the "Tohoku???" thread, but I thought I'd make a more general announcement here.

For those of you who can make it, I'd like to do a write-in this Sunday, November 11th, at the Clis Road Starbucks in Sendai from 2-5 PM. It's about a five-ten minute walk from the station. I plan on being at Starbucks with my laptop and my "So little words, so little time (NaNo '04)" t-shirt on, so I should be pretty recognizable. There won't be a place to plug in, but I am also going to have a notebook to write in once my laptop battery dies.

From Sendai station, take the West Exit on the second floor of the station. You'll be on the pedestrian deck above the taxi and bus pool below. Straight ahead will be Loft (look for the big TV screen on the side of the building). Walk toward Loft on the pedestrian deck. Once you get to Loft, continue walking on the deck away from the station and turn right at the corner. Continue walking until you go down stairs (past GIO café) to an intersection with Sakurano straight ahead. (Don't go down the stairs near Tsutaya!!!!) You should be in front of "Vegas Vegas" pachinko parlor.

Cross the street to Sakurano and continue walking down that street until the next intersection (just a crosswalk). Cross the street to the left, and you will be under the covered arcade; it will say "Clis Road." Walk along there for about 2-3 minutes or so until you see Starbucks on the right. It's next to a watch shop. If you find yourself in front of Mister Donut on the right, you've gone too far!

Okayama meet up

Looks like there will be an Okayama-shi meet up this Saturday (11/17) at the Seattle's Best across from the Nishiguchi exit of Okayama Station (next to the ANA hotel). I should be there a little after 2pm for a few hours, and WilliowWolf will probably be there with a few friends :) I'll be sitting somewhere near an outlet with a silver powerbook (where I seem to be almost every weekend these days) so feel free to come and stop by if you're in the area ^^

Temple visit and write in

Hello there, I posted to the old Nano forum about this but since we have a shiny new Nano site I will make a shiney new nano post.

I live in the Kansai area, about two hours from Osaka by train, in Higashi Omi, Shiga ken, and on November 10th I will be having a write in at my measley 2DK. The best part about this write in, however, is that it will be immediatly proceded by a trip to Ishiyama Dera in Otsu.

Ishiyama Dera is famous for being one of the places where Murasaki Shikibu wrote

The Tale of Genji

, making it a perfect place for noveling prayers. After prayer (and a little looking at maple leaves) we'll come back and write the afternoon away into evening. We'll set up times so people not so in to the sight seeing can meet us later for the write in.

I would like to get a head count before I make solid plans, but I was thinking, having the three rooms we could split into rooms of various degrees of silence and concentration, and that if everyone brought something we could probably have a very nice meal for dinner without cutting more deeply into our starving writer's pocketbooks.

So for now, I would like to know who is interested, how early is too early for you, and if you have any ideas. This is my first nano event, to attend or to hold really, so I'll be crossing my fingers that it all works out.

Kansai write ins!

Kansai crew!

What works best for you for write ins? I have to work most of the Saturdays this month, so for me I'd rather do weeknights. When and where is best for you?

One vague plan:

When: Wed. November 7th
Where: Tsukaguchi Mr. Donut or Doutour (Tsukaguchi station is between Sannomiya and Umeda on the Hankyu line, and both these places have second floors that usually have lots of seating, so I though they would be good)
When: 7-9ish?

Thoughts? When and where is best for y'all?
