I want to write a story or series about a brilliant private investigator with many flaws. I want the character to be an alcoholic and a gambling addict, but I can't right him with out him seeming weak. Does any one have any advice?

Your character reminds me of a character played by the brilliant Robbie Coltrane in a TV series called "cracker". He loved his drink and gambling and had relationship problems. But he was also a forensic/behavioural/clinical psychologist who helped the police.

That was the brilliance in the conflict in his character. The police couldn't do without him despite his weaknesses. I think that is what you need to find in another character. Someone who can't do without him.

PS That should be "write", not "right"

Maybe when he gambles or drinks, he gets spurts of how to solve cases or something.
