What I would possibly regard as an essential part of the story!
The story is basically about a young ambitious journalist who reports on a big cash robbery. He then pursues a trail of evidence that involves the British criminal underworld, police corruption and maybe even MI6.
Why take the cash? For what purpose?
Any ideas?

I'd like to add:
for the thrill
to show that they can
money for the sake of having more money so they can have more stuff
it's a lot more portable than say, stealing a car or stereo
it's easier to pass off real stolen money than it is to set up a counterfeiting operation
because there's nothing on TV

How about to assassinate President Bush? Talk about motive.
Not that I advocate murder or violence, but people die every day. Why should he be any different? [I'm kidding, people! We're talking fiction, here. I'm a non-violent, peace-loving, compassionate Buddhist.]

In "The Day of the Jackal", the French hire a hitman to assassinate De Gaulle. In order to pay his fee, they rob a few banks.
I don't want to give too much of the story away but that is the kind of thing I am thinking about.

I'm thinking of a much bigger plot than the original of just robbing a bank for money. I'de say think about how the US trained Osama Ben Laden which in turn became their worst enemy.
Bear with me here...
what if one of the secret british agencies wanted to fund (through the bank robberies) a terrorist group to kill/dismantle that originally british-trained terrorist group.
Kind of like the Us funding the IRA to kill Osama.
This might add so much more work but I think in the end when you work a sh!tload, the results generally show.
The IRA was just an example although I though ironic that common enemies would unite to destroy an out of country threat that wouldn't see a difference between the two.
Here is a great list of terrorist groups with their goals, locations on the globe, etc.
