Welcome to San Francisco--The introduction thread

Hi everyone,

Here's a great place for you early birds (and late birds) to come in and introduce yourself to the San Francisco writers all around you. Mention your neighborhood(s), how long you've been in Nanowrimo, and anything else interesting.

As a reminder, the regional forums are all-ages, so keep it clean. :)

To start it off, I'm Rob, Gallifreyan in nanoland... 7th year Nano participant, 4th year(?) SF Municipal Liaison, and 8-time Bay Area Writing Retreat coordinator. I actually live outside the City these days but work in Potrero Hill, and hope to have time to fix that living situation soon.

Showing up soon on the scene will be calendula-witch, a.k.a. Shannon, my co-ML for the second year. Watch for her nifty neon ML tee shirt too.
Pan-Bay TGIO Party

Dear Bay Area Wrimos,

While many of you may be excited about the wafting smells of roasted bird and mashed treats in a casserole dish, there is something else to look forward to! Next Friday, December 5, is the Pan-Bay TGIO party! It will be held from 8 PM - 11 PM at Root Division (www.rootdivision.org), located at 3175 17th Street, San Francisco, CA.

There will be crowns, a raffle, and a (completely voluntary) reading of NaNoNovel excerpts, as well as some free LiveJournal T-shirts and vintage SuperNano! T-shirts from 2004. It is an all-ages event, and your cheerleaders and significant others (and friends, neighbors, and fellow writers) are welcome, too! Whether you won NaNoWriMo this year or not, we want to see you there.

Don't forget to bring two different one-page excepts from your NaNoNovel for the wall display. (You should print them out in a large font, as the venue is a bit dark!)

While drinks and snacks are available, there won't be dinner at the event. If you'd like to have dinner in the city beforehand, Root Division is located in the Mission District of San Francisco, which is overrun with fantastic restaurants.

If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer your time to set up or take down the party, you can contact Tavia at tavia_stewart@nanowrimo.org. If you have any questions, feel free to email me at lindsey_grant@nanowrimo.org

We can't wait to celebrate you and your wordy accomplishments!

Lindsey and the NaNoWriMo team
Read on the radio

This may be a bit too far south for you, but in case you're willing to drive a bit...

Hey, if the fabulous accomplishment of writing a 50,000 word novel in a mere 30 days isn't enough of an incentive to propel you over finish line, how about this: The opportunity to read part of your novel on the radio!

Every year for the last several years, DJ Ann Arbor over at KFJC has graciously invited winning nano participants to read on a segment of her weekly radio program called Unbedtime Stories. During most of the year, she reads material by authors she thinks people should know about. During the first few months after nano, she opens that microphone up to you, the NaNoWriMo winners.

KFJC (89.7 on your FM dial) is located on the Foothill College campus in Los Altos Hill. Their website is: http://www.kfjc.org. Ann Arbor's show is Wednesday mornings from 6am-10am. In the past, the readings started at 8am. Info about her program can be found here: http://www.kfjc.org/programming/program_info.php?houroftheweek=54&info_i....

If you're interested in doing this, you need to contact Ann Arbor at aarborkfjc@aol.com AFTER you cross 50k and then select a suitable section of your novel that takes twenty minutes to read. I also recommend practicing (lots!), so you sound polished on the air. When you email her, she will provide you with additional information.

I've done this a number of times, and it is a lot of fun. It's always a kick to arrive at work following my reading and have a couple of coworkers see me and say, "Hey, I heard you on the radio!"

Write-Ins for November 2008 -- where? when? who?

Here's a thread for everyone to scout out write-in locations in their neighborhoods.

To be an unofficial ambassador, pick a place and a time, announce it here, and show up. We'll get you the little table-tents to identify yourself as a Nano person, if you don't have the tee shirts and such... or even if you do.

If you find a place, and you want to volunteer to be the ambassador, please mention it here and then talk to the management to make sure they're okay with a dozen laptop-toting writers coming in, spending copious amounts of time and money (remember to thank our hosts with your wallets whenever possible), and drawing stares from their regulars. Be sure to check hours, since some places like to close before we like to close our laptops.

In the past we've done Crossroads Cafe in Soma, Royal Ground at 17th and Geary, some places at the end of the N Judah and 16th and Church that I can't remember the names for, Brickhouse in Soma (which has become a bit harder to gather in as I recall from last year), and so forth.
Sat. 11/22 Inner Richmond write in - Cafe La Flore

Yes, it's me again. Never say die is my moto. So, I'll keep posting my whereabouts and who knows, someone may desire a little writerly companionship. So, without further ado:

Where: Cafe La Flore - Clement Street and 12th Ave (easily accessible by the #38, the #2 Clement, and the #1 California. As well as the #28 come to think of it)

When: Mmmmmm, probably 11 or 12 pm?

Environment: I've only been the once, today actually, but it was quite convivial. Smallish tables, rows of outlets, couches and comfy chairs. Free WiFi. Music was pretty good. Writerly company was excellent today, but obviously I can't guarantee that for tomorrow.

Any SFNanoMoms?

Wondering if there are any moms in the SF Nano group. This is my first year Nano-ing with a baby (8 months old)-- anyone else out there writing at nap time? I figure if I can't be writing (and when the baby is awake I definitely can't be) it might be nice to talk NaNo with someone-- so if you moms are out there, and would like to meet up for a "playdate" when the babies are awake so we can get in some plot talk or other NaNo encouragement, I'd love it! Please NaNoMail me.
What's your 25,000th word?

So a lot of you are past 25k, and for those of us way behind, here's an old standard thread where you throw out your 25,000th word. Usually your word processor will let you select a mess-o-words and run the word count function on it, which will let you easily find word 25k (and word 50k when you get there in a few days).

My 25000th word? No idea yet. But hopefully some of you will have great and organically-achieved words to inspire me and the other laggers. Stay tuned.
Writing in or near Potrero Hill?

Anyone interested in meeting at Atlas Cafe (or somewhere else around potrero/soma) early evenings this week or next week?

I'm way behind on my word count (not a surprise) and finally have a bit more time. I'm planning to write at least a thousand words of regional email tonight but I need to get a lot more on my novel. Anything sane walking distance (or with parking in range) of 16th and Potrero would be cool for me.

Maybe Atlas Cafe tomorrow late-afternoon?
Wanna be interviewed?

Hello everyone!

You might have seen a post I made at some point in the kickoff thread, but anyway, I'm Elizabeth and I'm a former NaNo participant. Right now I'm writing for San Francisco State's school magazine, and for the next issue I'm doing a story on NaNoWriMo.

So, I wanted to see if any of you SF writers would be willing to meet with me and talk about NaNoWriMo- your novel, your experiences writing it, crazy things you've done in the pursuit of 50,000 words. I know you are all super busy with your novels (on top of school and work and what have you), but if you want to help a journalism student out and be featured in the article, I'd really appreciate it! You can leave me a comment here or email me at elsmith7@sfsu.edu.

Thanks & I look forward to meeting you!

hey I just updated my word count and then took a peek at the thrill ride of blue vertical bars on my Nano stats page. and there marching like implausibly even stairs, was our region's word count. at this rate we are going to bust thru the top in two or three days or so.... yeah SF! go team go!

my word count validator is not working

I dutifully woke up this morning and cranked out 1700 words, but when I went to post them on my site, I couldn't access my word count validator. It wouldn't let me click on it. Any clue?

The site is really slow, which I'm assuming is because it's getting a ton of traffic.
Friday November 14th - any takers?

Okay, this is my 2nd try at posting this. I inadvertently hit something and think it sent it out into the fractured ozone.

Here's where I am and will be today, trying mightily to wrestle my word count into submission (getting it onto the page rather wasting copious amounts of words in blogging, responding to bloggers, posting on community boards, answering emails, answering emails that hadn't actually been addressed to me, putting my 2 cents in here and there just 'cause).
I'm in jeans and a light green t shirt. I have a Mac powerbook with grubby Nano stickers and a new "I Voted" sticker on it.

Where: Coffee Break, Geary Blvd and 10th Avenue
When: now (9:15 am) until 12 pm, or 12:30 or 1 pm at the latest
Empty tables, non intrusive music, outlets, free WIFI, very nice owner
Food: okay coffee (the Organic is VERY good though), limited bagels and pastries, homemade sandwiches

THEN

Where: Martha & Bros, California and Divisadero
When: after 1 pm, maybe as late as 2 pm until 5 or 6 pm
Empty tables, possibly intrusive music but the staff are amenable to turning it down b/c I'm a long, long time regular, free WIFI
Food: STRONG coffee, bagels, pastries, cakes, pre-made sandwiches and salads

[NaNoWriMo HQ] NaNoWriMo's Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon

Hello San Francisco Wrimos,

NaNoWriMo HQ is excited to invite you to our second-annual Night of Writing Dangerously Write-a-thon. Come spend a blissful night of eating, drinking, and novel-writing with 200 Bay Area NaNoWriMo participants and staff!

The event is on Saturday, November 15. This year’s theme: NaNo-Noir. We’ll be summoning the spirits of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett with chiaroscuro lighting, mood-setting background movies, and writing feats more dangerous than falling in love with a femme fatale. Beyond a Shadow of a Doubt, this will be a night you don’t want to miss.

How it Works:

All funds from the Write-a-thon benefit NaNoWriMo's youth and adult programs. To attend, just raise $200 or more in contributions through your easy-to-set-up Write-a-thon Firstgiving page by November 10.

Everyone who comes will get dinner, drinks, caffeine, a funny dinnertime talk by NaNoWriMo Director Chris Baty on 10 Years of NaNoWriMo Craziness, and a special Night of Writing Dangerously tote bag filled with books, writing software, and edible treats. You'll also have a chance to win raffle prizes such as museum passes, yoga classes, movie tickets, spa treatments, bottles of fine wine, and a baseball signed by Judy Blume.

The top three fundraisers will get to choose from special prizes, including a Dell Inspiron laptop, a 32 GB iPod Touch courtesy of Storyist.com, and an AlphaSmart Neo courtesy of Renaissance Learning.

As soon as you raise $200, send me an RSVP. If you raise $300 or more, you can RSVP for a guest as well. The ballroom has limited seating, so please RSVP as soon as possible!

For more information about the event, including photos and video from last years event, and to see a list of all the exciting raffle prizes, visit our Write-a-thon page.

Any questions? Drop me a line.

Hope to see you all there!

fifty-thousand ways to leave your lover (the word,or words, that is)

I'm doing all the chores that my girlfriend usually has to ask, or beg me to do. I actually cleaned the tile in the bathroom. I keep finding reasons to go all the way to trader joe's and spend money on stuff. (I usually let her shop) I've vacuumed the apartment almost every day since Nov 1st. I've been cleaning out the closet and the book shelves. Goodwill loves me. Can you believe I took a few old, "collectible, books to green apple and the young female buyer told me, they were, "too old." I might actually wash the car.
Saturday November 8th - any takers?

It is 9:23 am and I am at Coffee Break on Geary at 10th Ave. Like yesterday, plenty of open tables, free WiFi, outlets, KKSF on low. I'll be here until 12:30 pm most likely, when I HAVE to go home and tackle a burned out lightbulb in the bathroom (must not be on step ladder in the dark) and a couple of other housekeeping things.

The afternoon/early evening shift location is still up for suggestions.

I'm the one in the burgundy Vassar t shirt (didn't go there, just have the t shirt).

And I will be at Martha and Bros tomorrow, Sunday, pretty much all day. I meet with a couple of friends in the am and the official, non official WRITE IN there starts at 1pm. But you are welcome to show up much earlier than that! My friends are very used to Nano-ers by now!

Anyone interested in writing in company tomorrow during the day? My preference is Inner Richmond or Pac Heights, but Inner Sunset or somewhere on the Geary bus line is do-able too. I'd a little motivation, a little cheerleading, maybe some browbeating or public humiliation - whatever'll work to get me going on this thing!
