The Oviedo Scribbler's Guild

Not far from the royal University is a magickal place I like to call home... a place where NanoWrimo Fantasy Writers are most welcome. Perhaps a time has come for us imaginative creators to meet and dream of places, of creatures, stories and lives that will change the world forever. There's no telling where the next JKRowling or JRRTolkien may pop from so until that day, let us come together and be merry! May stories be told that shall outlive the very papers they are wrote upon. This is my invitation... if you live in Oviedo or the University of Central Florida area, and you have a passion for the fantasy genre, then please don't hesitate to respond... with participation starting here, we'll eventually pick a place and time to start creating other-wordly masterpieces under the umbrella of fun and friendship. Let's encourage and inspire each other in "The Oviedo Scribbler's Guild".

I look forward to hearing from you!
Take care!
Forming a New Writer's Group

I am looking to form a new writer's group in Orlando, Florida.

I'm considering one that meets in the evening on Monday or Tuesday once a week. This would be for serious writers. Meaning that every week people should have new material written up.

Possible Locations (though I am open to suggestions):

1. Orlando Public Library-Downtown on central between Orange Ave and Central (they have private rooms there for groups)
101 E. Central Blvd.
Orlando, FL 32801

2. Drunken Monkey- On the Corner of Bumby and Amelia (coffee shop with many outlets for laptops and a welcoming atmosphere)
444 N Bumby Ave
Orlando, FL 32803

It will be a critique and support group where depending on the amount of people we either share every week or take turns sharing and critiquing our work.

The group is going to be one that is supposed to be one that is for critiquing, sharing works and getting moral support between fellow fiction writers.

This group is only for fiction! I personally write fantasy with some dabbling in romance. If you are interested please email me (D. Kiplan) at balthane at

yahoo.com

Anybody around UCF

Hey everyone!

I'm new to the NaNoWriMo thing. I've been trying to write a novel since the sixth grade (I'm 20 now), but have never managed to do so. I picked up "No Plot! No Problem!" and am now a real believer in the 30-day draft approach. I realize not many of you will be looking at this forum much considering that it's the middle of January and November is ages away, but I figured I'd post and see if there was anyone in the UCF/Oviedo area that wanted to do an editing group in February. I am doing my own NoWriMo right now, and am would like to do some editing when it's done on the 30th. If no one reads this until October, hello from January, and I'll see all of you in November!

I was wondering about some of the year round groups people mentioned.

I was also wondering if a lot of Orlando NaNoWriMo people also do NaNoEdMo in March.

I'm taking a break from any "real" writing in December, but I would like to get this thing all nice and shiny and presentable next year and was wondering who else will be working on that with their NaNo novels.

Wish me luck in December

Glad I finished early. Had an accident this afternoon getting my Rascal electric scooter off the lift on my car. A heavy spring snapped one metal bar against another and caught my right thumb between them. I crushed the tip of the thumb and ripped ligaments. I'm in a splint for at least 2 weeks. At least I have use of the other four fingers but I'm going to be on Darvocet for a few days and won't really care. LOL

Take care every one,
Almost there....

Almost there...

Less than 6k to go if I want to make it just over the 50k homestretch and give me that purple bar that's been popping up all over the darn place.. I want one... Please.. :)

Started about three different stories on this, all are mish-mosh together. The final one has been going on and on and on like a very looooong short story. Have yet to break it out into chapters or anything else resembling a "normal" novel.. Hope that is okay in itself. This is the first time I'm doing this..

Anyways... Hopin for encouragement and support... All the guys at work are just shaking their heads amazed that such at thing like NaNo is even out there... I'm nutsy to them.. Woohoo...

Hugs to all who made it!!! Hugs and support to those who are getting closer with each passing minute!!

Great Editing Method

On a thread about "how do you edit your book?", one writer listed his web article and I thought it was excellent. I wanted to pass it on. He wrote a very detailed, step by step approach to dealing with a large book, getting the scenes in the best flow, which level of editing to to when, etc. Very well thought out. I printed out a copy to use when I start my edit (hopefully late January),

Also, if you are interested, the NaNoFiMo website has been fixed and you can now register for December. www.NaNoFiMo.org.
Green Lines check in here!

Here's a thread to show off those marvelous green progress lines that mean you've hit 50,000 word point.

Congratulations! We've made it.

Once you upload a verify your word count, the green lines turn purple and you become an official winner. We have to upload and verify before midnight on November 30. I'm still working on the story, but I do plan to verify a few days in advance because I don't want to get caught in any site slow downs on November 30.

Made a personal word count goal

When I started on the 15th, I worked out a day by day count of about 1600 words per day as what I would have needed if i had started on the 1st. I was wondering how long it would take me to catch up with that count.

I made it yesterday!!!! I had estmated 36,700 on the 22nd and I ended at 11:30 last night with 36, 966. Word count for the day:5699.

Only 13K to go. I think I'm going to make it!!! Yeah.

Mwahaha! I am awesome =)

I have reached the goal of 50,000 words! (though I am certainly not going to stop writing just because I have reached the goal; I must finish the novel!)

But that is not the whole purpose of this post. This is to praise the write-ins and all of the motivation and great numbers of word count that come from them.

If you feel you are behind in your word count and have not come to any meetings yet, come join us for motivation and support. If you are right on track but feel you could use some extra motivation or just think it would be great to be around people who are going through the same craziness as you, you should come out to the meetings. If you are ahead but want to encourage others to catch up, come to the meetings. :p

It really is true about the meetings being extremely inspirational, great places to get word count done, and there being people there who will get your butt in gear if you start slacking.

And that is the end of my spiel about why everyone should come join the fun and insanity of the write-ins so that you get the full crazy experience of NaNo. =)
Writing at work...

/sigh The hardest thing in the world is trying to get your word count in during a busy day. What do you guys do to sneak the words in while you're supposed to be doing other things? :) I'm trying to get as many words in during work today as possible, and then I'll feel less swamped when I get home! Anybody have any magic tricks? ;)
Where do you do your writing?

I discovered early on in college that I can't write at home to save my life - too many distractions are at hand. So, over the years, I've spent a LOT of time in various coffee shops and restaurants with free wireless (because writing without being able to check my email is a special kind of torture).

So, for this year's NaNo, most of my prep work has been finding a new place to sit and type. I think the winner, both for location and for delicious beverages, is the new Drunken Monkey Coffee Bar that's over on Bumby just south of Colonial. They even have rice milk, which thrills me no end. The only draw back is that they aren't open very late.

Where do you do your best writing?
----------
Read along as I write at therotund.com.
If only...

... there were a way to write in the shower.

Seriously. I've realized something this week. I write my best stuff in my head during the morning routine. Trouble is, I can't just drop everything and write it (especially in the aforementioned shower). And even when I do sit down to write it down, I can't remember it quite the same way. It's the same thing when I'm driving... I keep notebooks in the car, but even when jotting things down at the red light, I risk just sitting there while it turns green and ticking the people behind me off.

So... just wanted to vent. Thanks for listening, NaNo Orlando. :) Does this happen to anyone else? (and am I the only one who hasn't broken 10K yet? Haha... 50K would take a miracle, so I'm making getting halfway through before the 30th my personal goal)

It's been kicking my butt. I was really doing well, but the past few days I've been happy with 10 words. (From that inspirational email we got.)

The NaNo Novel of Doom

Ok, so we’re coming up to the end of the first week of NaNo & I know some people are behind & some people are ready to defenestrate what they’ve already written.

I can understand that completely, so this is not necessarily a helpful hints thread, but a venting thread. What do you do when you get frustrated (before you see the light, get up off your ass & get back to work)? Do you jump up & down, screaming? Do you play cheesy hair-band rock ballads & sing along? What do you do to vent out all of your frustration?

Sometimes when I can’t write, whether it’s because I’m stressed out or just story-stuck, I will jump up & down & have a mini temper tantrum. My animals look at me like I’m insane & that makes me laugh & I feel a lot better. If it’s not a temper tantrum occasion, but I still feel like crap, I go for the chocolate & I think describe to myself in vivid detail the taste & texture of the chocolate. If that fails, I say screw it all & watch TV or a movie for a little bit. I’m a fan of Alias, Farscape, Stargate, Buffy, & the Dark Shadows Revival series.

PS- Thank you KL for letting me steal your title of last year's novel, so I could aptly name this thread. :)
