[STICKY - PLEASE READ] Welcome to Springfield NaNo 2008!

Hello Springfieldians and welcome to National Novel Writing Month for the year of 2008!

I've got a few things to cover in this post as there are a lot of changes, but first I'll introduce myself.

My name is Robert and this is my fourth year doing NaNoWriMo.

And this brings me to that first bit of news, and probably the most shocking change to all the oldbies:
I am pleased to announce that this year I am your *new* Caffeine Riddled Municipal Liaison! For all of you who are new to the craziness that is NaNo, as a Municipal Liaison (henceforth known as "ML") my job is basically to organize this whole shebang, set up all our meetings/write-ins, be a beacon of support if you feel the need to vent and also keep you all on task so you can cross the finish line before November ends!

For all the old hats curious: Gayle has decided to step down from MLing this year. I know we're all sad to see her go, but that doesn't mean she's gone from NaNo altogether! Hopefully she will continue to be at write-ins and be the generally awesome person she always has been, just without the crazy responsibilities she had to work with before.

Also, it is with much pride that I announce that Miss Emily (Tigress here on the forums) will be my right hand woman/second in command throughout this November; just in case I can't make it to any of the events planned or if I just need help with stuff.

Outside of all of the new ML changes, we have informational meetings!

There are currently two informational meetings set up and they are as follows:

<strike>Meet-Up #1
When: Sunday October 12th
Time: 3:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Where: Seattle's Best Coffee Cafe located inside the Borders Bookstore on South Glenstone</strike>

Meet-Up #2
When: Saturday October 25th
Time: 3:00 PM - ???? PM
Where: The meeting room inside Panera Bread on the corner of National and Elm

Per usual, these meet-ups are merely social gatherings for us all to get to know one another before we spend all of November hunched over our computers (or notebook paper) hammering out quasi-plot and dealing with characters that refuse to listen to us. I have some stuff planned for both of these meetings, but that's all a surprise and I'll have more info as we get a little closer!

Things are looking to get off to a great start and I can't wait to see all my NaNoers this year!

Your *new* Friendly Neighborhood ML,
Robert
Planning for the annual Thank Hell It's Over! (THIO) Party

Welcome to the THIO Planning Thread.

For those of you new this year, at the end of every November each region holds an "End of NaNoWriMo" party, also known as the "Thank God It's Over!!" party. We here in Springfield participate as well, and we call ours the "Thank Hell It's Over!!" party....just because we're kind of a big deal like that.

The party will most likely take place during the first week of December, after NaNo has ended. This is where you all come in. Since we have exactly two weeks left until December 1st, we need to utilize this time. So while you continue hacking away at your plot (or lack thereof), start thinking about the following things:

- What date should we have the THIO party?
- Should we have it at a venue like the library where we can potluck and bring our own food or have it at a restaurant?
- If we decide to have it at a restaurant, where should we have it?
- If we decide to have a potluck, what dishes should we try to bring?
- Any other ideas or comments

So, keep this thread in mind and if you come up with some ideas, pop in here and let everyone know. This is your party, so you all should decide on something that you all want to do.

Keep brainstorming!
Just Curious

Does anybody like what they wrote? Do you plan on polishing it and trying to get it published? I for one really don't think mine is publishable even after re-writes mainly cause I am not sure what genre it could possibly fit into. But, I am going to edit it and work on it some more. Maybe there is a short story lingering in there somewhere.
Congratulations

To everyone who made their goal of 50,000 words this year. We all deserve it! For those of us who might not have completed the 50,000 words this year...Pat yourselves on the back for whatever you managed to accomplish. In this day and age with busy lifestyles...getting anything down on paper is a chore...so be proud of what you did accomplish.
Where can we find your NaNovel?

;D If you have a place where you're posting your NaNovel, you should totally share links and updates and such here. Nyaha.

If you aren't posting your NaNovel somewhere and would like to, I advise LiveJournal. It lets you format it in whatever ways you need to. (I'm personally using LJ because I do some pretty funky formatting that DeviantArt won't let me do.)

You can find my LiveJournal here: http://roomofsleep.livejournal.com/

I got 36,600 words. And three days. And MONO. So uh let's all just safely assume I'm scrambling and writing in a very sick haze.

Who else is scrambling to finish before the deadline? Let's commiserate inbetween frenzied writing patches!

My Novel Just Caught on Fire! And other issues you can vent about

So you hate your novel. That's understandable, it happens to everyone at least once in November. But there's good news and it has nothing to do with saving money on car insurance. The good news is that this thread exists solely for you all to get your frustrations out about any problems you're having with your novel, characters, plot or anything involved in the NaNoing process.

Do not, however, post frustrations about other NaNoers in this thread. If you have a beef, settle it with that NaNoer in private or come talk to me, that's what I'm here for. This thread is *only* for Novel Related Annoyances.

Enjoy your rants!
Houston, We have a problem! ==Panic setting in here

I use a Mac G3 computer and write in Word. well as I am nearing my 50k mark the thing decides that it simply can't save anymore in one document!!!! What???

Also, I need a direct link for the word count verification.

Being Mac has advantages and disadvantages. I don't get viruses, but I have trouble with some standard formattting of web sites. Any help on the Word issue would be greatly appreciated. I did have the foresight to send everything to my email account to save it that way in case the computer decided to die on me. The last time I set out to write a novel the cat peed on my computer on the fourth chapter and I took it as a rather harsh first review and promptly went back to not writing a novel.....The computer died and the cat lives outside. I figured that I could have bot a dead cat and a dead computer and win nothing or let the cat live as a reminder of the frailties of technology and problems with my reliance of such things.

Thanks!
WriSynSGFMo Write In Schedule for the Month

Afternoon my Wrimos, your ML here with information on our Write Ins for November.

I apologize that I'm getting this up so late, but having been focused on running two opening write ins as well as recovering from a nasty bout of pneumonia, I forgot to throw this on here (plus the NaNo site has been testy, as I'm sure you're all aware of).

So here it is, the listing of Write Ins for the entire month of November. If a date doesn't have a meeting place next to it yet, that means I haven't gotten confirmation from businesses on if they'll let us use their space.

<strike>Thursdays: 6pm - 10pm
Drury Campus (The Down Under) - North Drury Ln, just off Central Ave
The Down Under is located at the north end of Drury Ln on Drury Campus just underneath the Findlay Student Center. Parking is located on the southeast corner of Central Ave and Drury Ln, you'll have to walk up Drury Ln to the Circle Drive to get to the Findlay Student Center, take the lower stairs to get to the Down Under. Free WiFi IS available.</strike>

<strike>Saturday November 8th: 2pm - 8pm
San Francisco Oven 1110 E. Republic Rd Springfield, MO 65807
This Saturday we will be having our next major write-in at the Southside San Francisco Oven. The new location is in dire need of business and the staff and owner are awesome and very friendly. They've agreed to help accommodate our needs, so I figured it'd be nice to help them out. </strike>

<strike>Saturday November 15th: 6:30pm - 10pm
Kaldi's Coffeehouse 900 E Battlefield St # 128 (In the Battlefield Marketplace)
This Saturday, our write in has been relocated from Panera to Kaldi's Coffeehouse located in the Battlefield Marketplace on E. Battlefield. We will have the cupping room (the little meeting room in the back) reserved from 6:30pm to 10pm. Parking is located out in front of Kaldi's. Free WiFi is available.</strike>

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, we will be participating in a Marathon Write-In. The 14-hour writing journey will begin in South Springfield for breakfast and wind its way across town before finally landing us downtown at Rendezvous for a late night cuppa. The other locations we will be taking part at will be revealed as we get closer to the date. Feel free to join us as we tour the Queen City of the Ozarks in true NaNoWriMo fashion and rack up our word counts before running into the holiday weekend and end of NaNo this year.

Venues for The Write Tour of the Queen City:
10am - 12pm: San Francisco Oven - 1110 E. Republic Road *BOOKED*
12pm - 3pm: Kaldi's Coffeehouse - 900 E. Battlefield Road #132 *Can't book as we'll be there over lunch, but I'm going to try to secure the Cupping Room anyways*
3pm - 7pm: Panera Bread Co. - 500 S. National Ave. *BOOKED*
7pm - 8pm: Hour break for dinner.
8pm - Midnight: Rendezvous Coffee - 320 Park Central West</strike>

November 29th and November 30th: Home Stretch Write Ins
Rendezvous Coffee - 3pm - 6pm
Join your fellow WriSynSGFMo writers as we race to the finish line and try to beat the clock in the hectic last two days of National Novel Writing Month 2008. These Write Ins will probably take place at Rendezvous (Panera was booked solid) both afternoons at around 3pm. We'll be there at both for about 3 hours, so hopefully that's enough time for everyone to kind of get some good last minute wordage in. Early afternoon also means we won't have to pay for parking and we'll beat the crowds.
"And without warning, the cat violently combusted" -or- THE DARES THREAD

Dares. For those of you who are new, this is a fun way to extend your word count and have a bit of fun while doing so. As you'll come to find out, most NaNo novels are silly pieces of fiction that we giggle about as we pound away at our word processors throughout November. NaNo is supposed to be fun, and Dares just increase that fun exponentially.

How does a Dare work?

Think of the game Truth or Dare, it's pretty much the same premise minus the truth aspect (so I guess you'd call it "Or Dare", but whatever.) People will come up with silly ideas and post them here, essentially "daring" the other authors to incorporate those suggestions into their novels; with "Points" and "Cookies" generally being awarded to the authors who successfully slide their dares into their stories somehow.

An example of a dare:

Have your character go to the library to get some obscure book and when she/he opens it up, there’s an extremely old piece of thin sliced ham between two of the pages.
+ Bonus Points if the character eats the ham.
++ Double Bonus Points if the character gets severe food poisoning from it.
+++ Triple Bonus Points and a cookie if the character projectile vomits on the antagonist.

So there you have it, a quick breakdown of Dares. So I now dare you all to come up with some really fun ones for us to use this year!
Madness? THIS...IS...SPRINGFIELD! :: THE RESULTS ARE IN!

So my awesome Spartans----I mean Springfieldians, something is afoot.

Something awesome and potentially crazy.

As I mentioned, Kansas City is having a marathon write in on Saturday November 22nd from 10 AM to Midnight...just like we are.

Well, guess what your insane ML decided to do.

Yep. We're having a Word War between us and Kansas City for the day of November 22nd.

Since Kansas City has a slight advantage over us by having more participants, we're going to be using an average word-count per person to measure the winner.

Basically this is how it'll go down: Starting on Saturday both PoetT (The KC ML) and I will take the current total word count for both our regions and write it down. We will write all day and have a great time (even if you can't make it to the write in, you'll still be involved!) Everyone will *NEED* to update their word counts *ON THE SITE* before Midnight on November 22nd. Then at Midnight, PoetT and I will both get the finalized word count for the day. We'll take the difference of the two word counts and then divide it by the number of currently active participants in each region (meaning all the people who have updated their word count at least once since Nov 1). Whoever has the higher average word-count per person will be declared the winner.

If you want more info on the numbers break down ("Count" is number of active users):

Kansas City: http://www.nanowrimo.org/wordcount_api/wcregion/164
and
Springfield: http://www.nanowrimo.org/wordcount_api/wcregion/228

This is a great and fun opportunity to interact with one of our neighboring regions and get a lot of words out in one day. It gives everyone a bit of incentive to keep writing and get those word counts as far as they can go. It promises to be tons of fun.

Are we up for the challenge Springfield? Let's rock their faces off on Saturday!
NaNo question.

I can't seem to find the support forum and figured everyone here may know the answer.

Can we continue to update our word count after November is over with? Or is that stopped once November 30th comes and goes?

Or should I just find a way to keep track of how many words it takes from that point onwards?

Thanks,
Heads up about today's Write In - Thursday Nov 20th

Just a heads up for anyone possibly attending the write in at Drury's Down Under tonight:

I will most likely not be there. Unfortunately, I've got a massively infected ingrown toenail which is REALLY REALLY hurting me right now. So I will be spending part of Thursday afternoon in Urgent Care to have surgery on it. And while I'm sure I'll be done and everything by 7pm, I don't think I will be up for much of anything besides laying in bed afterward.

I apologize for the short notice, but getting better is obviously the priority here.

I wish everyone luck tonight and hope you continue to strive on to your word counts!

~ Robert
Shameless Advertising!

Right so the big challenge for me this NaNo season is writing around theater. We're in the final two week to curtain and that means building set, long practices and limited caffine to make sure our voices are in tune. =(

But the long and the short of this is that The Springfield Catholic High School Irish Players (myself included) are putting on Little Women from November 20-23.

That's Thursday at 7pm' Friday at 7pm Saturday at 7pm, and Sunday at 2:30 I think.

This show is going to drain what little budget we have and thus we need biiiiig audiences to offset costs.

Ticket prices are seven dollars for adult like people and I think five for students, I'll check those numbers monday.
It'd be so awsome to have people from here show up, we're really trying hard to spread the word this year.

Any questions gimme a holler.
Ugh, I cannot believe this.

But the evil creature dreaded by all writers, Writer's Block has decided to land on my story The Vampire Curse like a ton of bricks! But amazingly, left my other NaNo story alone.

I'm torn even though I know one day that evil creature will up and leave and I can continue on with my story, I'm tempted to put my other story up on my author's page and go with that. But I would love to work on them both as I have only 8350 words on the TVC compared to 12000 on my other story, which I have decided to call The Pharoah's daughter(working title).

I do not know where I went off on my Vampire Curse story. I reread it to find out what I did. But I'm just totally stumped by it all. I just do not know what I should do with it. I do not want to trash it but I know I may need have to add something more to the already written story itself to make the story flow again. But what it is, I don't know.

I have not typed in a word since Friday morning on my Vampire Curse story. So I am so very behind my planned word count on that story.

The "Attention Deficit- Oooh, shiny!" Thread

So I know we had one of these last year. basically, you're hammering away at your keyboard and suddenly you need a break, something to distract you. Sooooooo. Yeah. As the one who gets physically dragged away from the Claire's at the Mall, I thought I'd probably be the best to start this. Let the distractions begin!

Elouai's - DOLLMAKERS. ZOMG DOLLMAKERS. Create you, create characters, create whoever. My favorites are the Candybar Dollmaker 3, Gaia Dollmaker (make the dollies, avoid the idiots!), and One Click Room Maker.
DOLL MAKERS - http://elouai.com/doll-makers.php
ROOM MAKERS - http://elouai.com/room-makers.php

Insaniquarium - Feed the fishies fishy food! Feed the fishies each other? Defend the fishies from monsters?! I think this requires Java.
http://www.freshpulp.com/fishtank/fishtank.html

Flu

Just when I'm getting some good ideas going, and my word count going up, my husband's making me rest 'cause I got the flu!

How am I supposed to update my word count if I'm in bed and no lap top? How am I supposed to write if I'm being made to rest and sleep? He just doesn't understand these things!

OMG, how do you keep up with the daily word count? I'm so far behind!

Any tips for a first time NaNoer who's trying to write around work, school, practicum, and husband?
way off topic - matzah

I know this is OT, but does anyone know where in Springfield I can find Matzah bread or Matzah meal? I'm not Jewish but our family is doing a seder meal for Thanksgiving (we try to broaden our horizons every Thanksgiving) and I want to try a recipe I found.
WriSynSGFMo (Wrimo Syndicate of Springfield MO) - Opening Minute Write In & November 1st Novel Kickoff Write-In ***RSVP HERE!***

With NaNo less than a week away, it's time to kick into high gear and start getting ourselves ready! This thread is the first of many for our November Write-Ins. As the month goes on you'll see more of these pop up in here. They're meant to be informational (so as I don't abuse all your email inboxes with huge mass emails) as well as an RSVP system so I can see as to how many people we can expect at Write-Ins so I can make those preparations.

So this is a thread for TWO events that will be happening within the same 24 hour period.

WriSynSGFMo Opening Minute Write In
Date: Friday October 31st
Time: 11pm - ???
Location: Rendezvous Coffee (Downtown Springfield)
320 Park Central West Springfield, MO 65806

!!! Parking: There is a parking lot located next to the coffeehouse, however it will most likely be full because like an idiot, I forgot that the Halloween Pub Crawl will be going on the same night. However, there is plenty of free parking downtown, especially close to Campbell and Olive (The College Station and Heer's Car Parks *WILL* be charging $5 to park on Friday night, so avoid those unless you absolutely want to park really close.)

What to bring: Your noveling utensils and a readiness to start on your novel! Also money for drinks or whatever else you may require for the night. Also, if anyone can bring a power strip, that'd be awesome.

Other information: We will be located in the upper balcony level of Rendezvous. When you come into the coffeehouse, before you reach the counter, you'll turn left and go through the archway. There will be a balcony and some stairs to the left after you go through the archway. Proceed up the stairs, that's where we'll be! We'll spend the first hour getting settled and chatting and will start writing at 12:01 AM. Rendezvous is open 24 hours, so we can be there as long as anyone wants to stay.

Important: We have the upper balcony reserved at Rendezvous, however we do need at least twelve people to RSVP and show up to get the balcony. If we have less than 12, then we'll be relocated downstairs. Just a heads up. So please RSVP if you want to attend, so I can get a head count and tell the owner!!

***

Now for our main event on November 1st.

WriSynSGFMo Novel Kickoff Write-In
Date: Saturday November 1st
Time: 1:30 PM - 9:00 PM
Location Panera Bread on National and Elm
500 S National Ave Springfield, MO 65802

Parking: There is a parking lot located behind the Panera. You can get to it either from National or Elm.

What to bring: Your noveling utensils, money for drinks/food, a positive attitude, and anything else you can think of! (Again, if people can bring power strips, it'd be appreciated)

Other information: We have the meeting room reserved for the entire time we are at Panera. It is on the left side of the cafe if you come in from the National Ave entrance. The door will most likely be closed when we're in there (to minimize any noise), so feel free to just walk right in whenever you get there! Expect some fun goodies when you get there!

Those are the two events planned for our NaNo Kickoff Weekend, hopefully you all will be able to attend one or both! If you know you can make it, please RSVP here in this thread with one of these:

*I can attend the Midnight Write-In at Rendezvous
*I can attend the Kickoff Write-In at Panera
*I can attend both Write-Ins

This way I can know exactly how many people to plan for. Thanks a bunch guys!!
