My name is Britt and I'm this year's Elsewhere ML. Due to the distances involved, I'll be focusing on the Lafayette/West Lafayette Area.

If anyone would like to host an event (anywhere in Elsewhere), just follow these simple steps:

1) Decide on a location.

2) Introduce yourself to the owner/manager of the location and let them know what you'd like to do. (Ask if they have space where you can hang up a NaNoWriMo flyer and invite them to join you.)

3) Either post in this thread or PM me with the details and I'll add it to the calendar.

Make sure that the details include What the event is (write-in, commisseration session, etc), Exact Location including zip code, Time from __ to __ (if you're not sure, guess) and (if you'd like) a one- or two-line description/teaser about the event.

4) Show up. If you organize an event, you are expected to be there.

Once I've been notified, the event should be on the calendar within 24 hours.

TGIO (West Lafayette)

Due to the low turnout at write-ins, our current venue (WLPL) probably wouldn't be a good choice for the TGIO party. =(

Does anyone have recommendations for a place that would be cool to meet up at some time in December? Maybe on or near campus? And what times/days are best for everyone?

Hey, if you're going to be writing out-on-the-town, let the rest of us know.

I will be writing at Starbucks in Marion (on the Bypass across from Wal-Mart) around 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 2) I will be wearing my light-blue 2006 NaNoWriMo t-shirt. There are ample outlets for laptop writers. I am aiming for 3,000 words, minimum, so it's a working session.

Okay, guys. We have only 15 days left. It's the final push. We've been challenged to be at 30K words by Wednesday. I'd be happy if we were all pretty close by the time we meet on Thursday. What I Learned From NaNoWriMo 2008

I've had a few writing-related epiphanies this year so I thought I'd devote a thread to things I never would have learned had I not done NaNo. Anyone else with short tales of amazing insight, please post here.

What I Learned:
1. I really suck at this.
2. Sucking isn't the end of all things.

The Office of Letters and Light Needs Your Help

It’s NaNoWriMo’s tenth year! From Adelaide to the Yukon Territories over 115,000 adults and 21,000 kids and teens are taking up the challenge of writing a novel in November.

NaNoWriMo and the Young Writers Program are possible because of the energy and optimism of a tiny staff at the Office of Letters and Light and an army of volunteers. Because the Office is a nonprofit, your tax-deductible donations are essential. NaNoWriMo is free to everyone, but it has lasted this long because people like you donate to the cause.

There are many ways to donate and a lot of them won't cost you anything:

* Donate directly by credit card, PayPal, or check
* Purchase some fine and stylish merchandise from the store
* Use GoodSearch as your search engine, and Yahoo will donate a penny for every search (it doesn't sound like much but it really adds up, especially if you're researching your novel!)
* Set up a sponsorship page at Firstgiving.com and invite your friends and family to donate on your behalf
* There are even ways to donate when you're broke

!!! Extra Important Reminder !!! (if you recognize DST)

(And you know I'm serious because I only use multiple exclaimation points for serious things.)

If your time zone was set correctly before Daylight Savings kicked in, you may want to double check and make sure it's still correct. This will avoid the scenario of 11pm rolling around on November 30 and then the magical word count valitator thingy tragically disappears for another year, leaving you with one hour to finish your novel but no way to prove that you did. I also suggest that you try to validate your novel before Novemer 30 if at all possible. If memory serves, the site gets a little glitchy as so many people try to observe the tradition of validating at the last possible second.

To set your time zone: my nanowrimo > user settings > time zone (mine is set at -0500, I think that's right).

I would also like to extend an extra special invitation to anyone that has fallen waaay behind (like me), I promise that if you come to a write-in you will do a lot more writing than you would if you just sit at home and "make time to write" (whenever I do that, it always ends with me getting on the internet or some other non-writing activity). At a write-in, all you can do is write!

You want to protect yourself from disaster as best you can.

You don't even need a flashdrive or a disk. You can just attach your copy thus far to an email, then send it to your email account. That's it.

I run Spencer Co. Animal Rescue Friends with my mother. I am forcing myself to do NaNo again this year because if I don't, the dogs will eat up all my time and I will never write another thing that isn't my signature on a credit card payment or a receipt! 11/15 Morning/Brunch Write-In (West Lafayette)

This Saturday is the morning write-in at the West Lafayette Public Library. If you need directions, check the calendar. There's a link to a map for each event.

We'll be meeting in the Elm Room from 10am-noon. I'll be bringing Plot Bunny cards, 1000 word prizes (also, extra prizes to be claimed for any writing done on 11/8, 1 prize for every 1000 words) and breakfast-type foods (bagels and donuts or something like that).

This doesn't have to be a strictly "meet to write" type meeting, if what everyone really needs is a bitching place (because Week 2 is all about teh suck). So. . . whatever. =)

A headcount would be appreciated so please post here if you'll try to make it and post any food requests/allergies that I should be aware of. Comments and/or suggestions, also good.

I went it alone last year, and while it was fun and I reached 50,000 and everything, it was.... lonely. I thought I was the only one on the whole campus who was doing it, but I recently heard that at least one other student did it last year, too.

So.... are there any AU students participating in NaNo? Because if you are, I would like to know you exist. :)

11/8 All Day Write-In (West Lafayette)

This Saturday is the all day write-in at the West Lafayette Public Library. If you need directions, check the calendar at the top of this forum, there's a link to a map for each event.

The library is open 10am-5pm, drop in whenever you can and get some writing done. I don't really expect anyone to be there all day (I won't be, but I'll be bringing 1000 word prizes and Plot Bunny cards when I do show up) but it makes for a great excuse if you need to carve out some serious time away from real life.

Let's meet upstairs, I'll bring a flyer or something to put on the tables we'll be using.

No RSVP necessary but if you have any suggestions or comments or whatever, feel free to post them here.

Sorry to be so late in posting this but I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Britt and I'm this year's Elsewhere ML.

Due to the size of the "Elsewhere" region, I'm going to be focusing on Lafayette/West Lafayette, but that doesn't mean that everyone else can't also take advantage of the neato Google Calendar that I will eventually figure out how to properly display somewhere on this page (EDIT: I got it. Go, me!)

So if anyone else in Elsewhere is interested in/willing to set up meetings and/or write-ins and/or kick off and/or TGIO parties, you're welcome to do that and if you NaNoMail me the time, location (full street address) and a short description of the event, I'll get it posted on the Regional Calendar.

(Obviously, if you're more comfortable holding meetings, etc that aren't searchable by the general public, you can coordinate your plans minus the Regional Calendar. For this reason, I will only be posting meeting times/locations if someone requests that I post them.)

My name is Britt and I'm functioning as ML this year. I've done NaNo the past two years, my main downfall has been not bragging widely enough about what I'm doing. I hope to set up some meeting times and write-ins and everything like that but it's all still in the planning phase.

So, let's have names (or not), your history with NaNo, anything else you'd like to add and what days/times are free (or not too busy) for you. I can't promise to accomodate everyone's schedule but I'm going to try.
