What's Everyone Up to?

Well, I am busy with my second semister of college. Yippee for me. Last semister I am proud to say that my grades went up and I got C and above in all my classes. So proud of the work. I am now busy taking 15 credit hours. ouch yeah I know. I have Math for Elementary Teachers I, Children's Lit., Diverse Learners, and last but not least Art. Then I have Fiction Writing (Which is what class I am about to run to) and Geography. I am so excited for my Fiction Writing class. I am writing down some really good excersises so I can use them for nanowrimo. Right now we are making characters. It's kind of exciting. Well, I best be off. But what is everyone else up to anything new. Anything exciting.

Like my sister is getting married in March. We never thought she would get married and here she is. Also I have a fanfic up and going on a website and new blog. So spill whats going on in your life since nanowrimo?
----------

Sorry it's taken so long to post this, but for the past few days the forums have been running very slow for me. This is Amy, the Wichita Area ML this year.

Write-ins:

Monday nights:

My email address is alices.house.of.cards@gmail.com if you would like to contact me about anything.
A Play I wrote for Nanowrimo

I had to write two plays for two of my classes. So I wrote one play for both class. And it was during nanowrimo...so it's about someone writing a novel...I thought I should share my masterpiece that I got 108% on...shocker.

See Girl Write by: Kendra

Characters:
Kendra, the girl who is writing a novel

Characters of the Novel:
Melody/Emma/Emily, the main character of the novel
Micheal, the main guy character of the novel
Andrew, Micheal’s best friend in the novel
Amy, Melody’s best friend in the novel
Abree, Melody’s other best friend in the novel

SCENE: Kendra sits on the couch with her laptop on her lap. She sighs every once and awhile and then starts to type. Then deletes what she has on her laptop and sighs again.

Kendra: (typing on the laptop) A teenage girl with blond locks and bright blues eyes is talking with her two best friends who happen to be twins, Amy and Abree Smith from down the street of hers.

On the other side of the stage walks out of the curtain a teenage girl with blonde hair walks out with two girls. They stand their talking quietly the audience can’t hear what they are saying.

Kendra: (typing) The teenage girl turns to her friends and says, “Well, you know how Micheal is, he turns up late every time we try to do things.” The other girls started to laugh. (stops typing and then sighs, you can see the movement of her arms and the clicking of the mouse as she tries to change something on her computer screen) Okay, lets try this…A teenage girl with brown locks and bright brown eyes is talking…

The teenage girl with the blonde hair puts on a wig of brown hair to indicate the change and she mutters to her friends about the guy that never shows.

Kendra: (typing) Amy the girl on brunette’s left turns to her friend and says, Sweetie he still thinks you are his best friend and nothing more so of course he doesn’t get here on time.

All three girls turn and look at Kendra with shocked faces like oh no you did not just type that for us to say kind of look.

Amy: I am not going to tell my best friend of three years that Micheal doesn’t care about her more then a best friend. You don’t tell someone that, you sugar coat it. Get it straight, or we will not help you with this story.

Abree: (shaking her head) What kind of author of a romance novel are you anyway?

Kendra: Okay, Okay, calm down. (starts to type again) Amy turned to her friend and says, “Sweetie the boy loves you and he hates to show up late.”

The girls all nodded and started to talk again amongst themselves. Kendra sighs and kept typing away.

Kendra: By the time Micheal did show up he noticed that Emma’s beautiful locks were like fire in the wind.

The teenage girl looks at the author with an annoyed look and takes off the brown wig and puts a red wig on to cover her blonde wig.

Kendra: Micheal smiles at Emma and says, “Sorry I’m late. The traffic held me up.” Emma turned to Micheal and replied, “Micheal, who was the girl.”

Micheal and Emma turn to Kendra.

Emma: Excuse me, I wouldn’t be so blunt. I am suppose to be a shy girl and stop changing my hair color. And really red, you had to choose red. I don’t even like red hair.

Kendra: (looks at Emma) That is true you don’t look good in red hair let’s change it to black the final time.

Emma takes off the red wig and puts long shiny black hair wig on her head. She straightens it out and smiles.

Kendra: (uses the mouse and changes a couple words on the novel) Emily turned to Micheal and said, “Micheal, it’s fine. Just try and be here more on time.” Micheal smiled at Emily and said, “it’s not a problem really.” As Micheal and Emily had their own conversation because every time it’s the four of them it seemed like really Amy and Abree were not even there in Emily and Micheal’s eyes.

Amy and Abree give Micheal and Melody a mean look then got an evil smile on their face. They started to slowly drift away from Melody and Micheal towards Kendra on the couch. Once they were behind her.

Abree: (looks at Kendra) Can I have a line or two to say please. Or am I not even in the novel.

Amy: But also, how about myself and Abree. And maybe a friend of Micheal’s try to come up with an evil plan to destroy the two of them because they have started to ignore us. (starts to get an evil look about her)

Abree: (shakes her head) No, I have one better. How about we come up with an idea to help them get together. Then we wouldn’t have to hear them complain about how they can’t tell the others they love each other.
Amy: Your such a sap.

Abree: (looks at Amy and glares) Well, your such a bitch.

Kendra: Okay, Okay girls. Lets do Abree’s plan because it is a romance novel.

Amy: You mean it was going to be a romance novel…

Kendra: (interrupting Amy sentence) No…it is a romance novel.

Amy: (sighs really big) Okay, Okay…have it your way. It’s your funeral.

Kendra: No, it’s my novel.

Emily and Micheal turn and realize that they missed something.

Emily: (laughs) Actually hate to break it to, but you are only around Kendra to write the words. It’s actually our novel because we run the show.

Kendra rolls her eyes and starts to type again.

Kendra: Emily turned to her friends and see their evil glint in their eyes. She knew that she missed something between her friends. She also knew that she had to ask them later what it was about. (sighs and re reads the last sentence)

I am going to have to change Emily’s name. What to change it to…(clicks her tongue) I know, how about Melody.

Emily/Melody: Are you done?

Kendra: Yeah, it’s going to be Melody with black locks and green eyes. (starts to type) They all started to head into the coffee shop to start their normal routine in the mornings. Which is breakfast on Tuesday and Thursdays at the local coffee shop. Which is always why Micheal is late because he always hits the snooze button.

The characters all turned and looked at Kendra. Kendra gave them a look that said what. Micheal sighed.

Micheal: Well, it just not a good paragraph that is for sure.

Melody: Yeah, and we really don’t want to sound retarded either.

Amy: That wouldn’t be a good idea, now would it.

Kendra: This is just the first draft. It takes ages to finally have a final copy of your novel to turn in to the editor. And still your novel isn’t done they even edit it and change things in your novel.

Melody: Then why write really…(looks at Kendra with a well look)

Kendra: (smiles at the thought) Well, I want to show the world you guys even though you guys are a pain in my butt. I wanted to show them your world and your struggles.

Melody: Oh…I see

Amy: So…your using us.

Micheal: Well she did create us.

Kendra: (starts to type again) Melody grabbed Micheal before he walked into the store and kissed him hard on the lips to show him how much she loves him.

Melody, Micheal, Amy, and Abree turned and looked at Kendra like she lost her mind and screwed up the plot.

Melody: WHAT!

Micheal: WHAT!

Abree: WHAT!

Amy: (walks up to Kendra while she is still sitting on the couch and slaps Kendra hard across the face)

A young man with blonde hair pops up out of the first row of sits in the theatre and yells.

Andrew: WHAT ABOUT ME!

----------

SCRIPTFRENZY in JUNE? Anyone want to try it? I think I might.

This is the second amazing-writing-goal-in-a-month project from the awesome folks who bring us Nanowrimo. From their website: http://www.scriptfrenzy.org/

Yeah, we are going into week 2 and I am already screaming these out throwing things across the room just to see how far it actually goes because I have three papers due, one sick person to attend to, three test, a trip, to clean my room, and on top of that write 350K I have lost it...severally I have lost it.

Last night I had a huge mental breakdown and you know what's sad my roommate laughed during it. She thought it was funny and she just woke up laughing at it again...I am tired.

I went to bed at such and such time and only got two hours of sleep. But that's what it's been like for the past week. No sleep...
Pay It Forward: Read a Novel Excerpt

About this time every NaNo, I let myself come up for air from my noveling efforts and make a concerted effort to spend some time in the forum community spreading some words of encouragement to my fellow wannabe-novelists.

The idea is simple: browse through the forums of your choice and randomly click on users in those forums. Read their novel excerpts, and then NanoMail them with positive feedback and words of encouragement. I usually plan on sending out at least 5 Nanomails in my genre (Sci-Fi) and 5 in my region (Kansas).

Sound like a good idea? Feel free to join me. Believe me, there's nothing like receiving a NanoMail from someone who's read your excerpt and wants to read the rest of your book. You can be the person that sends that message. You'll feel great about it afterwards!

WORD-COUNT-ITIS

Word-count-itis is a rarely documented phenomenon that affects writers in November. Indications that you are infected include checking your word count more than once every ten minutes and using the calculator function on your computer to determine whether "that was enough words to earn a piece of candy"...

A side effect of word-count-itis is the overwhelming and uncontrollable urge to update your Word Count in your Nanowrimo profile. Every few minutes. Possibly every few paragraphs. Or even every few words.

If you are suffering from word-count-itis, seek help immediately. Set a timer or alarm for 15 minutes and don't check your word count until the timer dings. Set a word count goal for yourself, and try not to check until you are absolutely truly convinced you have passed your goal. No peeking, 'cause that is a sign of word-count-itis.

Good luck!
p.s. The above message contains 141 words that I probably should have been putting into my novel, but I was trying to combat my severe case of word-count-itis by taking a quick break. Back to the word counting...i mean...writing...
WORD WARS WEEKEND

Have fun with Dares and Challenges!

Word Wars
If you need a boost, challenge someone to Word Wars, which is a timed friendly competition usually between five and twenty minutes where participants try to write as many words in that span of time as they can. I will be writing on Saturday night and Sunday, and hope to challenge or be challenged to boost my word count! See you in the forums!

Dares
Or, you can post post a dare in the forums! I heard about this great idea from Amelia, who said that her group in Arkansas last year did this regularly. Basically, a group of writers dare each other to all include the same thing in your novel. Will it be a dancing monkey, a purple armadillo,
The big question around my household of course is: How many pieces of pie will my husband have to buy for people at the Topeka TGIO party if they incorporate a light gray '57 Chevy into their novels? He issued the challenge in the Topeka forums, and I have heard from several writers who have already introduced a '57 Chevy and are ready to hit 50K and collect their piece of pie!

Plus, you can visit the Word Wars nanowrimo forum to compete against other writers from around the globe!

Hey guys, well if anyone actually is coming back for another year. I did talk to some of you and you guys are still not sure. One of you said it's all go because you miss hanging out. lol. Anyways, for anyone that lives close to Emporia or goes to school at emporia or works here. You are more then welcome to join in the fun we have. I haven't planned anything at the moment but what dates would work for you. For a getting to know you. I would so much love to get to know the new you. So tell me when's good.

For those of you that may have seen the flyers in Hutchinson (and even those of you who haven't been paying attention to them), you are welcome to join me at Wichita on October 27th. I am going to the Wichita get-together from 1-3pm.

On Thursday, November 1st, I will be beginning my nano insanity test by picking some luxurious and mildly expensive caffeinated item from the Metropolitan Coffee House at 17th and Lorraine at approximately 9:30 am, give or take however many customers are ahead of me.
So, soon to be indoctrinated nanomaniacs, I dare you and double-dare you to meet me at the starting point and match me tit for tat as we reach for the elusive 50,000 master dream. -- Mama Q
STUCK? I have an e-mail version of a goody bag, just ask!

Email met at lysistratagirl@yahoo.com and I will send you back the attachments mentioned below. (Three Microsoft Word files)

Five fun things from the Topeka Nanowrimo goody bags!

1. Novel Emergency Matrix.doc
The Novel Emergency Matrix was created a few years ago by SarahJanet, the co-ML in Edmonton, Canada. Choose your most challenging emergency obstacles and see what advice it gives!

2. tracking device.doc
Helps you keep track of your progress with a 2007 November calendar and daily word count goals.

3. The Randomizer Novel Rescue Companion requires that you select the nature of your emergency and role a 6-sided die to identify your solution. BEWARE – two years ago I very publicly rolled a die at a write in and I had to add a talking animal to my chick-lit romance novel! By the time I figured out a way to work that in though, I have to admit that my plot was back on track!
It is available at: http://www.embereye.com/nanowrimo/RandomizerNovelRescue.pdf

4. Add your own package of M&Ms for this handy chart. When you are stuck, shake out a piece of candy and check your color on the chart. Try the suggestion to spice up your novel.
Novel-Saving, Word-Count Boosting, Character-Reinvigorating, Plot-Restoring, Colorfully Delicious Candies which melt into your plot, not in your hand.
If you choose ___, then try this advice to get un-stuck in your writing…
Blue- The new M&M color makes you want to do something new – add something new to your next scene, sending someone on an unexpected shopping spree, introduce a new character, or make something happen out of the blue!
Green- This scary M&M color means that in your next scene you should add deathly illness, pesticides, bug infestations, 24-hour-flu and all things gross and stomach churning!
Yellow- Yellow is the color of excitement, energy, electricity, or explosions. Whether it’s a bomb threat, sexual tension, or a terrible prediction, add some energy to your next scene.
Brown- For an M&M the color of dirt, go natural, add a scene in the outdoors with dirt, earth and rocks, or have the natural world attack your characters with a weather disaster.
Red- Red M&M’s go fast, so speed things up to get through the next scene and skip ahead to a week (or a day, or a year) in the future.
Orange- Orange is awesome and exotic. In your next scene, work in some travel for a character, bring in an out-of-the-ordinary person, or give a minor character a fake tan.

5. plot ninjas will save you.doc
Plot ninjas are a general term for anything that adds an element of interest to your plot and increases your word count. The term was coined a few years back by an enthusiastic nanowrimo writer who explained that if you are stuck, have NINJAS ATTACK. By the time your characters react to the attack, fight off the ninjas, and find out why they attacked in the first place and prevent future attacks, you will have several thousand more words and you will have hopefully advanced your plot and found a way to get back on track. Luckily for those of us NOT writing stories in which there might conceivably be ninjas, a plot ninja can actually be ANYTHING that you add to your story unexpectedly that adds an element of interest to your plot and increases your word count. A list of plot ninjas is available in the attachment. You can read through and pick one that appeals to you, or for a real challenge, print the page without looking and ask a friend to cut each idea apart so that you can draw one randomly from an envelope and surprise yourself with your plot’s newest twist!
Happy writing!

----------
Hooray! It's the most wonderful time of the year!
Kansas - we're one big writing family!

So - here's the deal. There are many more Kansas writers than we have official Municipal Liaisons this year, (I know that some Kansas MLs are waiting to get their ML-super-powers still). Those of you who are not in a region of the state with a go-getter may have to organize your own kickoff and write-ins if you want to meet up with other nanowrimo folks.

Already many people have intuitively started location-specific topics in our Kansas Region forum, which I think is perfect -- please continue to post local events that you are organizing, work out details, etc. Remember that the forums are public and anyone can read them. Also, please schedule events in public places.

If you are organizing Kansas events that you want advertised to everyone in the Kansas Region (especially to reach those who don't regularly check the forums), I am happy to forward your event details to the e-mail list using my ML-super-powers - just send me the info at lysistratagirl@yahoo.com.

Also, as I prepare for the Topeka kickoff and made goodie bags, etc. I will design as many of my giveaways as possible to be e-mail-able so that I can send treats electronically to anyone who wants them.

November is approaching fast, and I am SO EXCITED that all of the novel ideas in my head can finally be unleashed into my battered old laptop (this will be my poor clunky laptop's FIFTH nanowrimo novel!)

Please hollar, e-mail, etc. if you need encouragement, have questions, etc.

We have a lot lined up for a great KC NaNoWriMo experience:
-Kick-Off Meeting, with goodies
-November write-ins (possibly in both Kansas and Missouri, though we often aim for a central location)
-forum cameraderie
-Thank Goodness It's Over Party
-Write-ins (twice-monthly) through the rest of the year

So if you want to be part of it all, visit the regional forum
United States :: Missouri :: Kansas City Regional Lounge

Even if you live on the Kansas side (I’m in Overland Park), you can still affiliate with United States :: Missouri :: Kansas City. (Up there under "My NaNoWriMo.") You'll get the occasional (about 6) informational e-mails about KC NaNo doings and local pep talks. You can keep an affiliation here in Kansas, too, so you can easily get to both forums–that’s what I do.

As of yet, this system doesn't allow you to choose one as your home, but if they get it to work, go ahead and make Missouri :: Kansas City your home. That really helps us keep track of how many WriMos are in the region.

I know, I know--the Kansas tagline includes "Kansas City." And we’re Kansans, not Missourians. But it’s worth it to have the wide range of people and viewpoints in our metro WriMo community. KC NaNoWriMo would love to add you to the mix.

Hope to see you on both sides of the state line!

----------

This is for everyone.

1737 N. 82nd St.
Kansas City, Kansas 66112

I hope this will fit into some of your schedules.
