South Jersey Winners!

Here you may bask in how awesome you - yes, you! - are.
Because, really. You are awesome. You won! Or at least, you tried to win. You count, too.

What was your 50,000th word? Mine was "heal".

Did you actually finish your novel?
For those who are not done, I challenge you: let's finish our books before January 1st. Then we have a good long while to rest, and then to edit. And, if you are like me, if you stop now, you'll never finish.

So, bask! Be happy! We're novelists, one and all. We wrote a lot and we deserve admiration.
I admire you!

(For those of you still chugging along - keep going! 10,000 words on a Sunday is totally do-able, and something you will feel great about all year!)

- Jenn
Black Friday: 10,000 words!

Okay, I'm slacking...I do need to update my word count, but I'm still sorely lacking. So i'm going for 10,000 words on this day of nothing. I will have to do 10,000 words on Saturday and Sunday in order to win, but I'm going for bust. I won't be online while writing, but I'm telling friends and hoping they'll email me with motivators. Will check in once in awhile. Any words of encouragement--or penalties for slacking off--appreciated. :)

I am tempted not to do NaNo next year. The devil is saying I already have too many UFOs; it takes too much time; there's really no point because you end up not liking the story anyway; it will be too hard to edit when you're done; and then you get bummed out when you don't finish...........

The angel is saying, well, the point of NaNo is to write every day, isn't it? That's all you have to do, is spend 30 minutes a day writing. If you want to write professionally, you'd be writing about 10 times that, so get your ass used to it, eh?

IDK. maybe I'll skip a year, work on finishing another story, then come back with a vengence in 2010. I don't think the problem is really writing every day. I think it's writing the same thing everyday. Maybe next year I'll just cheat, and log 50,000 words all told, over the course of the 8 or so stories I already have in progress.
----------
time for another misadventure

TGIO

Dare I say it? The month is almost over and I'm so far behind, this is my worst year. Nonetheless, anyone for TGIO?
I'm thinking B&N on Route 70west in Marlton right near the circle and intersecting with 73south.

Anyone interested in getting together and hashing out all our joys and frustrations? Goodness knows I need a break from all this writer's block.

omc

Didn't see anything on the calendar for TGIO. Also, I'd love to hear from anyone with suggestions. Who is the municipal liaison for this area? Anyone know? Thanks, and hope to hear from all you NaNoWriMos in hiding down here.

Camden County Write-Ins

Hello! My name is Jenn, and this is my first year doing NaNoWriMo. I am way to excited for it, and I fueled all of that energy into trying to nail down some places to host write-ins. I had much success!

The M. Allen Vogelson Regional Library in Voorhees, part of the Camden County Library System, has been kind enough to allow me to set aside a room for three nights in November, specifically for write-ins.

Here is the information:

Tuesday, November 4th
M. Allen Vogelson Regional Branch Library - Voorhees
Public Meeting Room C, Third Floor
6:00pm to 8:30pm

Friday, November 14th
M. Allen Vogelson Regional Branch Library - Voorhees
Public Meeting Room C, Third Floor
6:00pm to 8:30pm

Tuesday, November 25th
M. Allen Vogelson Regional Branch Library - Voorhees
Public Meeting Room C, Third Floor
6:00pm to 8:30pm

Here is a Mapquest map of the location to allow for easy directions to and from: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?name=Camden+County+Library&city=Voorhees&st...

(I emailed Springsea all of this information to put it on the calendar, but - no response! So I figured I would put it here, to let people start inquiring as to whether they can attend.)

I will contact the library about bringing food - I am certain that I can get permission, because I've been to club meetings there, and every one involved snacks. So, for now, I would like to ask that anyone interested in attending please think about bringing some kind of edible! Horrible junk food is nice, but since we're going to be sick of that by the end of November, how about trying something a little different? I'll leave you to decide!

I spoke to the Chief Librarian about making some kind of official group (he was actually the one who brought it up, I believe). I would be really excited to do this, but first I would like to know if there are enough participants to make it worthwhile.

So, if you would be interested in attending any of the write-ins above, or in being part of a NaNoWriMo "club" at the library, please let me know! My email address is JSTharp@Gmail.com. Please include the word "NaNoWriMo" either in your subject or in the body of the email! Of course, you aren't /required/ to email me saying that you will participate, but it would be nice!

All write, I've said enough! Have a great day, and Happy Planning!

----------

Cumberland/Salem county WriMos?

Hi everyone. Anybody out there from the Salem/Cumberland county area? Seems like a lot of you guys are quite a bit closer to the shore or farther north than I am. Just wondering if there's anyone else in the south-western corner of the state NaNo-ing along with me this year. Anybody west of 55 and south of 322?

Hopefully this doesn't come across as trying to fragment our group. I love all South Jersey people equally!
Bits, Bytes, Snaps & Thoughts

Need a plot? Need a character? Need a setting? Take an Idea, leave one behind...... The idea is not to "steal" a plot or idea, but just to take one aspect of your story (or any story, any aspect) and bounce off it into new ideas. It can be an idea you are using or not. Someone else could snag your idea and turn it into somethiing completely different than what you had in mind. Maybe it's a story someone told you, conversation overheard.

To start off:

* I've had cowboys on the brain lately. Don't know why. a cowboy on a road trip in a big Ford F-150. no cows or horses anywhere though. A cowboy on his way to Mexico to look for work--laid off because of the economy.......wow.

* When I mentioned NaNoWriMo to the Board of Directors of my outdoor adventure group, they thought i should write a novel about seemingly trustworthy people who lead groups of unsuspecting strangers into the woods for mass human sacrificies. I'm getting more and more ideas on this every minute.

* One of the members mentioned above told me a story about a man she met through an internet dating service who asked her on the second date, "How do you want to die?" He said he wanted to know because he was writing a book on internet dating. The plot possibilities coming out of that conversation are nearly endless.....

Will think some more and come back to add.....bluestone i know you can help us out with this one! :)
----------
time for another misadventure

I see some names I recognize, but many are unfamiliar. Let's fix that, shall we? :)

Name: Melissa
Age: 18 (I'll be 19 on kickoff day.)
Location: Cumberland County
Occupation: Student (Journalism major)

This NaNo will be my: 4th
Years won: 2
Novel Title: The source
Novel Genre: Fantasy/Drama

Anything else we should know?: I'm carrying way too many credits this semester, and am Editor-in-Chief of my college's paper, so doing NaNo on top of all that scares me. Then again, I say that every year and turn out fine, so.

Okay, SJ WriMos: SOUND OFF!
Hit the Wall Today

Not the writing wall: I coughed out about 1K words this morning.

Nope. It's the physical wall. Currently working 12-hour days, six days a week, with an hour commute each way. Really grinding me down.

Not much time for Nano, but taking what little time off that I have, and turning it into words.
Anyone interested in a Mount Laurel/Moorestown meetup?

Probably on Saturday afternoons; off the top of my head I know there's a Panera Bread and a Borders in the area, and probably more if anyone has other ideas. I'm at BCC in Mount Laurel until 11; I would love to meet up with fellow Wrimos when I'm done there one or more weeks in November. Let me know if you're interested, and if you have a preference as to where (I'm pretty flexible).
SJ NaNoWriMo Information LiveJournal Page

Hey, guys. I created a LiveJournal page that can be easily accessed when the site is on the fritz. Right now, the calendar link and write-in reminders are there, and as more important information becomes available on this site it will be updated there. Feel free to suggest other information that you would like the be made available there!

Be sure to bookmark it, because it will still be useless if you can't get to the link here!

I asked my region where they'd like to throw a gauntlet, and one happened to land and hit you, so here's the challenge.

Nashville promises to ridicule, scorn, taunt and rag upon South Jersey for the entire month of November.
We also fully plan to have a higher average word count than you do.

We fully expect you to plan the same thing.

Take up the challenge. Taunt, jeer, whatever.
We're waiting....

Drop your pin on the map!

Wouldn't it be nice to know more or less where everyone is writing from? So... I created a collaborative Google Map for us. You can go to the map, drop your pin on it (I suggest using a nearby intersection instead of your exact house) and let people know your home stomping grounds.

You can go to the map to add yourself and view others.

Instructions to add yourself to map

Go to the map address above.

Sign in to Google Maps or create an account if you don't have one (top-right corner).

Click the NaNoWriMo South Jersey map listed at the left and then click the Edit button just below it.

Find your location on the map.

On the map itself, click the pin icon at the top of the map (the upside down teardrop).

Drag the pin to the right spot and let go to drop it.

Enter your name (NaNoWriMo username makes sense) into the "Name" box that comes up.

Press Ok.

You're now on the map. You can go back and delete or edit your pin anytime (as can anyone else. It's a shared map, after all).

And, finally, check out where your fellow WriMo's reside!
Kickoff!

How about Wednesday night, October 29, in Hammonton, again? seems to be a decent "halfway" point. I'm looking into one of my favorite coffee shops ever down there, Casciano's. Approached the owner for last year's event and she was very enthusiastic but we made other plans.....

They are only open until 6, so Wednesday night may not work for them....we could go somewhere else or shoot for Thursday (they're open until 9 Thursday). anyone have a preference? If you can make one of those days, please post here so we can get an idea if it would be worth it for them to stay open.

Thinking introductions & chatting mostly, since this is what held us back at every write in i attended....too much talking to interesting people and not enough writing! Some games & contests to get us all in the spirit. The coffee shop is also a "sweetery"--lots of desserts and sugar! AND coffee!
NaNoWriMo Writer's Retreat

So, I couldn't pull it together for the first weekend in November....anyone Interested in a getaway to Stokes State Forest in North Jersey for the 15-16th or the 22-23rd? They have furnished cabins, the largest sleeps 12 people (in bunk beds!) and has two full bathrooms, a fireplace, kitchen, and cooking facilities. Called to find out how much space there is (like how many tables & outlets so we can set up shop LOL), no answer so i'll try back later.

If we have five people, it would be $50 per night. More people than that, it would be cheaper! We can all pitch in for breakfast & sandwich stuff, and probably go out to eat in Branchville for dinner Saturday night.

http://www.state.nj.us/dep/parksandforests/parks/stokes.html scroll down to cabins for details on the facilities

Open Letter to My Family and Friends

I got this idea from the No Plot No Problem book (which i released through PaperbackSwap and am very, very sorry i did so). I wrote this much last year, didn't have the guts to finish or send it. My goal this year is to send it by the weekend.

Its funny how my writing style and even personality/mentality have changed since I wrote this. Change it how it suits your life :)

****
Dear Friends:
November is National Novel Writing Month. I and a bunch of other crazy people from all over the country try to write 50,000 words of a novel in one month. The task is meant to motivate all the slackers and procrastinators (sound familiar?) into accomplishing something. it’s hard work!

For the past three years I’ve attempted this....and not finished. (Are you really surprised?) My original plan was to just finish some of the many projects that I’ve started over the years, but I've realized that that is not the purpose of NaNoWriMo...the purpose is to help writers over their writer's blocks, to get the juices flowing in a real, freely, creative way. The more you write, the more easily the words come.

Remember that I still will be working full time, and in addition to that will be serving as the local NaNoWriMo coordinator...meaning I get to help manage the different gatherings in South Jersey. (For some reason, NaNoWriMo novelists like to work in packs.)

So why am I telling you? Because behind every great writer there are people who are more practical, down-to-earth and organized. What can you can do to help me accomplish this seemingly impossible goal? Some suggestions from NaNoWriMo’s founder:

•	Cheer me on. Ask me how I’m doing with the novel. Remind me that I will look quite foolish if I don’t win after all my bragging.
•	Bet me. What will I have to do for you if I don’t finish? Nothing monetary; I'm sure you've gotten that I'm a starving artist. Make me wash your car, run errands for you, stand on the street corner and yell at passing cars—whatever. Let me know if you have a goal in mind and we’ll work out the details.
•	Send food. Not just snacks, but real meals that can shove in the microwave. Coffee is not a bad donation to the cause either.
•	“Dare” me. Give me things to put in my novel, such as odd names, lines of dialogue, weird actions, etc. (example: have a character with the name of your boss die a horrible death, make a character have a phobia of cats, have a character drive 1000 miles in a day, etc.) Send them along once in awhile to keep me on my toes, as well as a consequence if I don’t fit it in. Generally the only purpose of dares is to get more words written. Sometimes you just run out of steam.
•	Occupy the dog for a few hours. Okay, so not for everyone, only for the ones close by who can stand her. But its hard enough to crash out 2000 words a day, let alone with a grumbling dog with her head in your lap, trying to get your attention with every squeaky toy in the house.

Of course, whatever I end up with on November 30 won't be publishable, but it will be a good start. AND it will be something finished, which is kind of a rarity in my life.

----------
time for another misadventure

United States :: New Jersey :: South

Interest Check - Eastern State Penitentiary Meetup

Hello, SJ Wrimos! I am thinking of organizing a pre-NaNo meetup at "Terror Behind the Walls" at Eastern State Penitentiary, in Philadelphia. It would be ideally on October 23rd, at a time between 7 and 11. The cost would be $20 per person.

http://www.easternstate.org/halloween/

It's great fun, not too scary, mostly amusing. I'd like to see if anyone would be interested in going. I think it would be great if anyone who wanted to could bring someone with them; not just for Wrimos! If you think that you'd feel better bringing someone you know (significant other, friend, child over 7, parent), by all means, do! It can be weird to meet with a bunch of strangers to go through a long, dark haunted house attraction.

If you think you'd like to attend, please post here.
