Allow me to begin. Here I am, a restless soul who just shy of a year ago decided to move to the Pilbara. Port Hedland to be specific. South Hedland to be even more specific. And what else is there to do out here than escape to wonderous worlds of imagination and write? I flatly refuse to believe that I am the only writer in this area, so come on people, show yourselves! Please......... It'll be great!!

Not from the NW, actually from the south east, but given that we are the only West Aussies to sign in so far I thought I would say hi.

Hi.

Where'd you move from to get to Hedland?

Shayne from Esperance

Phew.... I wasbeginning to think I was the only person in WA. Not FROM Hedland, I underline. I moved here at the beginning of this year from Brisbane for my partner's work, which I think is probably the standard story for most women who live here. This is my second nano, though I shamefully admit I didn't finish last year. This year will be vastly different though, mainly because there isn't a whole lot to do up here other than hide from the locals and count the days till I move back to Brisbane.

So, Shayne from Esperance, tell me of your life with Nano.....

There are more of us around. There was a thread in the old forums before the site was closed for renovation that had a few recent posts. IIRC you posted there too. Hopefully we can get some sandgropers out of the woodwork soon (even just temporary ones like yourself).

This is my third nano. I don't think you are allowed to use the word "fail" around here, but I haven't hit 5 figures yet in my word counts, so fill in the most appropriate word you can think of.

I have a reasonably busy life (I have seven children!), but I know I have the hours in the day to pull it off if I use them appropriately. In previous years I have just gotten stuck and then behind in words. Once that hit, I decided I was never catching up. This year, I am working on outlining till it hurts. At least them I will know where to go. I am literally planning on deciding the number of chapters, the number of words per chapter and everything. I will also be planning how many words I have to write on any given day. I have particular days of the week that are just not available for more than a token write-in. If I set myself up to overdo it on the other days then I should be right.

I hope you don't mind, but I've just "buddied" you. You'd better do well, because I'm going to be gunning to be at least as far along as you are... Does that make me a NaNoStalker?

Yes I too am yet to hit the 50k mark. My excuse is that the existence of Nano only became apparent to me last year, and it was just at the end of October. With ten points for enthusiasm, I took the first week at full power and made 1000+ a day, and then I got bored of my story and started another one. Then I got bored of that one too (curse you inner critic!!!!) and abandoned the whole idea, opting for a road trip instead. This year, however I promise will be diferent. I've recently decided that as writing and publishing a book, or at the very least a published story has been a personal dream since... forever, I'm taking the opportunity of living in the middle of nowhere with very little happening to write write write write and not be one of those people who get to old age and realise they never took a chance to do anything they actually wanted to do.

Sounds good in theory - only problem is my inner editor, critic or whatever HATES ME (it's mutal) and I always get too down on myself before I can get much done. But I'm working on it.

So, talking stories, I'm working on somthing along the lines of Marion Zimmer Bradley's Avalon series. I think you'd call that series mythic fantasy with romance, and historical fiction thrown in for good measue. I'm setting it in an imagined world, informed by conditions of this world. The fanatsy aspect will be minimal, more religious/mythic than any kind of sword and sorcery type of fantasy. Ultimately though it's about love and growing up. I'm roughly planning scene by scene but there are heaps of gaps at the moment, as I'm sure there will be heaps of gaps when I go to write the thing.

This is cool. The only other West Aussie to show their face so far and writing fantasy too!

Mine's a low-magic fantasy. Plenty of non-human, fantasical creatures around the place but they don't play much part in the story (except for the main character, who looks and acts human).

I've done a reasonable bit of planning so far, and the story is already taking on a mind of its own and going ina completely different direction to that which I had planned. I hate to see what will happen once I start writing!

Esperance here. If you get anyone closer than that you'll probably be doing well.

3 time winner, hey? Well done. Glad to have you around!

Yay! More Westerners! It was getting a bit lonely. Perhaps the "North West" is putting a few people off. Anyway. Yes there does seem to be a strong tendency for a lot of wrimos to indulge their fantasy sides. What about you No One, what are you doing this year?
