I'm after a slightly crazy challenge for this year's NaNo (yes, I know NaNo is itself a slightly crazy challenge, but I want an extra one). So I'd like people to give me snippets of lyrics from their favourite songs, which I will then attempt to plausibly work into my novel somewhere along the way. Anyone else who wants to try to do it as well is more than welcome, of course.

So to start things off, I'm going to try to include, "What do you do with a fruit?" which, aside from being a Sesame Street song, has the added bonus of the fruit connection. : )

From the Linkin Park song "Given up"...

"I've given up, I'm sick of feeling, Is there nothing you can say..."

or from The Wreckers song "Stand Still, Look Pretty"...

"I want to paint my face, and pretend that I am someone else..."

"I am slowly falling apart, I wish you'd take a walk in my shoes for a start..."

"Sometimes I find myself shaking, in the middle of the night, And then it hits me and I can't, even believe this is my life..."

or from Red Jumpsuit Apparatus "Face Down"...

"Cover up with make up in the mirror, Tell yourself it's never gonna happen again..."

That's it I promise... I think... they're some of my favourite songs so yeah, I thought that I would recommend them there.

Ah, a man after my own heart. I think I may actually have to try and include as many lines as possible from Fingertips. Bonus points if I can do them in order...

"It's alright baby, it's only an octopus,
Don't bother it and I'm sure it won't bother us."

- Don't Be Upset by Jeffrey Lewis

One of my friends sang me that couplet the other day. I have never heard the rest of the song, but it's clearly the most awesome thing ever.

I'd already decided on one for myself, an old one that just about suits my age - Dolly Parton - Jolene - 'I'm begging of you please don't take my maaaa-an.' The perfect song to listen to in the seconds before you die rather unpleasantly I suspect.

So anything from Jolene...

Fruit? I'll have to give that some thought.

I do this automatically, when I read through any prose of mine I have the misfortune to find lying I around I am beset with random flourishes and reminders of the music that I was listening to when I wrote it. Never thought to have it as a dare though...

Right, well, you know me and the Pet Shop Boys so:

"I heard it in the House of Commons / Everything's for sale" (Shopping)

"You had your chance / Now we've got the mandate / If you've changed your mind / I'm afraid it's too late" (Integral)

"White on white / Blank, sublime / Minimal" (Minimal)

"The city is quiet / Too cold to walk alone / Strangers in overcoats / Hurry on home // Tonight I've been / Walking in the rain / Someone's been talking / And I've got the blame" (One More Chance - I have actually used this as a basis for a story)

Also, some E.L.O.:

"Night is day and twilight's gone away" (Twilight)

"I met someone who looks a lot like you / She does the things you do / But she is an IBM" (2095)

"I sent a dream to you baby last night, from the end of the world" (From the End of the World - I've also used this)

And Supertramp:

"What would you say / Now they're calling you a radical / oh responsible criminal" (Logical Song)

And now for some things that are completely different:

"Voices / Running around my brain / I can hear voices" (Voices - Todd Terry)

"And take your place / As a Gamesmaster" (Gamemaster)

"Live forever / For the moment / Ever searching / for the one" (Viva Forever - Spice Girls)

"Nobody knows it / But you've got a secret smile / And you use it / Only for me" (Secret Smile - Semi-Sonic)

"He promises me I'm as safe as houses / So long as I remember who's wearing the trousers" (Taking a Ride [I think] - Depeche Mode)

"A handshake / Seals the contract / From the contract / There's no turning back // The turning point / Of a career / In Korea / Being insincere // The holiday / Was fun-packed / The contract / Still intact" OR "The graph / On the wall / Tells the story / Of it all // Picture it now / See just how / The lies and deceit / Gained a little more power // Confidence / Taken in / By a suntan / And a grin" (Everything Counts - Depeche Mode)

"At nighttime they go walking to see God in their own way / Save the morning for your weeping" (Cemeteries of London - Coldplay)

"A pocket full of Babylon, a belly full of hate / Go to sleep my one true love / And may your dreams be sweet" (Silence - David Gray)

"A house on fire / A wall of stone / A door that once was open / An empty space an empty room" (Untitled - Keane)

"We're all super-monkeys / And alien babies" (Rock is Dead - Marilyn Mansun)

"I lift my eyes to the sound in the sky and I hear it / A voice on the breeze is so serene" (So the Story Goes - Erasure)

"I turn sideways to the sun / And hide my thoughts from everyone" (Price of Love - New Order)

Okay, I'm done spamming now. I've found all of these lurking in different places in the random pieces of prose I've unearthed these last few weeks so they're not completely impossible, just bizarre.

And that's all I have to say about that

Not one of my favourites, but apparently an inspiration to many:
Nick Cave's Into my arms
"I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know darling that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
Into my arms O Lord"

Thom Yorke and Radiohead have many quotable lyrics
"Please could you stop the noise, I'm trying to get some rest
From all the unborn chicken voices in my head
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but not an android)
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but not an android)

When I am king, you will be first against the wall
With your opinion which is of no consequence at all
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but no android)
What's that...? (I may be paranoid, but no android)

Ambition makes you look pretty ugly
Kicking and squealing gucci little piggy" - Paranoid android

"You want me?
F**king well come and find me
I'll be waiting
With a gun and a pack of sandwiches" - Talk Show host

"been thinking about you
how can you sleep
these people arent your friends
they're paid to kiss your feet
but they don't know what I know
but what do you care
when I'm not there" - thinking about you

Much as it pains me to add to your burdens - especially considering I've done it once before already - came across this one today just begging to be used...

"You ask me how to cure your headache - use a gun." (Sneaker Pimps - Think Harder)
