Now that AFK has closed, where are we all going to meet up for coffee and chatting and not enough writing?
Does anyone know somewhere that will let a bunch of us hang out and set up laptops?
Sigh. I miss AFK.

I've been looking! (A little hard since I don't actually live in the CBD.)
But yes, this will be a dilemma.
My old work-place, the Fish Cafe at Manly (bayside) is nice. They have space up the back. Coffees aren't too expensive. Food's nice. They wouldn't mind us sitting there for hours on end. It's about a ten minute walk from the Manly train station on the Cleveland line.
I'll be there anyway - it's got a pretty view of the boats.

Sounds nice, and Manly is a great area, but a bit far from Brissie.
Weekend write-ins would be great there, but the riverside markets are a bit distracting! Or maybe a source of inspiration?

Teehee, I prolly shouldn't be mentioning this, since I'm not sure it should be public knowledge...
But what the hell :D
My husband manages Optus in the Queen st Mall. Just opposite it there is a cafe/bar place, one of those little asian joints. I think it's East meets West or something.
Anyway. Optus has wireless.
And er... you can pick it up really well at the restaurant....
Only thing is if we're meeting at night or something, I'm not sure if they'll let any people under 18 there. I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem, but i am always getting asked for id even though I can't drink at the moment, my husband orders beer though so maybe it's because I'm in teh company of someone ordering alcohol?
Wow I hope that made a speck of sense...

Would the cafe at AVID bookshop be big enough? They seem to love writers there...

Love the idea of a few Nano-nights.
The cafe at Avid would be awesome and they do love writers. (I used to work there one Christmas long ago). It really depends how many people are turning up. It would be fine for say less than 10. More than that and maybe not... Also I imagine they keep regular shop hours not nights. Although there are weekend days too.
3 Monkeys in West End is also a great place for coffee/tea/chai/cake ect. And I know they open fairly late during the week.

^^; Less than 10? We had a general amount of anywhere between 15 and 20 for the write-ins we had so I think Avid might be out of the question :( Plus, we get REALLY noisy (yes, even during the write-ins) and can be a bit of a pain in that regard.
Do you know if 3 Monkeys has places where we could, say, plug-in laptops and such? Otherwise we could keep them open as an option for the social meets :)

I don't think the 3 Monkeys has the sort of area we'd need, particually if there are heaps of other people there. We went in there one day and we had trouble finding places to get 4 people let alone 15+
I don't really frequent the city so I can't really help.

Pancake Manor is open 24 hours and the tables are big but I'm not sure about electricity. However, there is easy access to pancakes and public transport :D

3 Monkeys has a pretty big area out the back, maybe if we book ahead or gave them some forewarning we could get in? I know a local stitch 'n bitch meets up there on Tuesday evenings (still haven't gone along >.>) so I suppose they're used to potentially

After thinking for 5 minutes....
Who owns a big house fairly close to the cbd (ie: ease of transport and the like) and doesn't mind a large rowdy crowd? :)
Honestly stumped for a location open nice and late with space for upto 20 (if you were getting 10-15 last year assume + 5 at least this year) where we've space for laptops and love.

I'm willing to open up my house for write-ins. I have plenty of power outlets, plenty of wireless, and room for about 20, probably more if we're willing to cozy up to each other. ;) I'm in Tarragindi, which is just south of Annerley, which is just south of the city (it's less than a 10 min drive, about 15 mins by bus, the stop is about 300m from my house).
I also have an espresso machine, in-house tech support (otherwise known as The Boyfriend), and I may even be able to persuade my brother to bake (his Anzac bikkies are to die for).

Yeah I don't know how 3 Monkey's would be on the power points and wireless.
----------I'm fairly sure they wouldn't mind a large group though provided you booked. Almost everytime I have been there there has been some kind of reasonably large group of loud people meeting for some reason or another. But the lack of power and wireless (although don't quote me on the wireless, I am just assuming) may be an issue...
