A write-in gets your writing out–out of the house, out of the same-old surroundings. Even if you’re usually the solitary type, you’d be surprised at how motivating it is to work with other writers, pounding out those words together, knowing that you’re not alone in this crazy run to 50k. Here’s the lineup:

Sundays: 6 pm -10 pm ***BUT NOT NOVEMBER 30***
Roasterie, 6223 Brookside Blvd., Kansas City, MO

Roasterie Cafe
Park in the lot behind or on the street in front. Support the business' tolerance of our 4-hour camp by buying food and drink there.

Thursdays: 6 pm -10 pm
The Writers Place, 3607 Pennsylvania, Kansas City, MO

The Writers Place
Parking on the street but watch the no-parking signs on the sides next to the building, and the fire hydrant. There is a small handcapped-accessible parking area in back. We'll have coffee and tea and a few goodies there, or BYO. Not on Thanksgiving Day.
***BUT YES ON SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 30, 2 PM TO MIDNIGHT***

Nov. 22, 10 am - 12 midnight
Traveling Marathon of Awesomeness
various locations

See details at
http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3118866
The Saturday before Thanksgiving, a progressive 14-hour write-in will scrawl its way across Kansas City. The Marathon will start in the Northland for breakfast, jump to midtown for midday, and wrap up late, late at night on the Kansas side of things. You can join inkwet at any location during the day, or drive along for the entire narrative journey. If you fall behind during the month, this will be a great chance to catch up if you’ve fallen behind, or get ahead before Thanksgiving.

All write-in details are posted on our KanMoWriCo Events Calendar
-----
Hijack! inkwet_image here: Why go to a Write-In, you ask?

WELL... Here's a few reasons to pick from:
Reason #1. The group. It's easier to go on when you have camaraderie, advice, encouragement, empathy, and someone across the table who's doing worse than you are. (You'll know. I headdesk.) In short, misery loves company. Success loves it more.

Reason #2: It's harder to quit after you've shared your commitment with someone else. If you drop out, we'll know you bailed. The world's term for this is Accountability; the NaNoWriMo term is we-will-send-guilt-monkeys-after-you.

Reason #3. Guidance & Ideas. For those of you who have never done this, those of you who like to talk through your ideas, and those of you who just like to talk, we can have a few minutes of writing-specific discussion. You can bring up issues that have you nervous or excited, or ask for dares if you’re stuck. We may have a separate area/table for talking, to keep from disturbing other writers.

Reason #4. Two words: WORD WARS. Competition is a great motivator. Don't believe me? Well, you've clearly never been Mike-mocked. We’ll organize a round or two for willing participants. (And we might even have prizes. We'll see.)

Reason #5. Wait--you're still not convinced? Tough crowd. Okay, reason number five--lean in closer, so no one hears the secret; I'm not even sure I'm supposed to tell--*whispers* if you come to a write-in, Teri will give you a KanMoWriCo button!

Now back to your regularly scheduled black-hatted posting...
---
Well, inkwet and I both hope to see you there!

What if the location or time of the write-ins aren’t good for you?

Start one! You’re perfectly welcome–yea, encouraged, even–to start, say, a Northland write-in or a southern Overland Park meet-up. (A meet-up, btw, is when you get together to talk about your NaNo experience, without writing. We haven’t had them here, but other regions thrive on them, apparently.) I only ask that you try not to schedule one that coincides with the regular Sunday evening write-in at the Roasterie.

If you come up with a meeting idea, post it here at the forum:
Scheduled?: Post it in this thread if it’s a regular write-in--say, every Tuesday at the Zona Rosa Barnes & Noble. Include full street address and, if you can, a website URL or Google map.
Spur-of-the-Moment?: If you suddenly decide to write at your favorite library or coffee shop tomorrow night at 6pm, go ahead and start a new thread, to see if anyone else in interested.

You might want to look for
- Coffee (and/or other beverages and food), or at least a place that allows them (many libraries now do)
- Convenient seating for 5-10 people in one general area (though you''ll probably have fewer show up)
- Power outlets for laptops (although it hasn’t stopped us from meeting at bookstores that are stingy with their electrical power)
-Be sure to check the daily hours for your location.

Any questions? Just ask!

Hey PoetT,
I put all your writeins as well as Topeka, and will do Witchita's and Manhatten on my calender so if anyone near there will know just by looking at my google calender. So just keep me up to date, I'll try to keep an eye on your threads but not sure I'll catch all of it.

Hi everyone! I've received confirmation from Doozens, so we're good to go. They've also re-extended their hours to 10 p.m., so we get an extra hour of writing time on Tuesdays!

Nov. 1: Kick-Off Party/Write-in :: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. @ Doozens
Doozens will be providing snacks for the write-in to get us off to a good start!

Tuesdays: Weekly Write-in :: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. @ Doozens

Saturdays: Weekly Write-in :: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. @ Doozens

Sundays: Weekly Write-in :: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. @ JP Coffee

Tuesday and Saturday Lee's Summit write-ins will be held at Doozens Coffee, which is located at 813 Lemans Lane (corner of Ward Road and 150 Highway) in (you guessed it) Lee's Summit, Mo. Doozens has also agreed to provide WriMos a discount on food and drinks again this year. I'll have cards to hand out at the kick-off party (and subsequent write-ins) to make it a little easier for everyone this year.

Sunday write-ins will be held at JP Coffee, which is located at the corner of 3rd Street and View High Drive in the New Longview area. The street address is 3390 SW Fascination Drive. Thank you to JordanAlexander for organizing that write-in!

I have a facebook group set up for LS NaNo participants, which I'll use to send invites to the write-ins. So, if you're on facebook, feel free to look up the NaNoWriMo - Lee's Summit group and join!

Cheers,
Ditty

Okay, I'll get those on the calendar, ditty.

Sunday, eh? Well, if you can't get into midtown on a Sunday, that's fine. But I really encourage you all to come at least once to the Roasterie on Sunday evening--that's our main write-in, and you'll meet the largest number of your fellow KC wrimos. Maybe you could write in the afternoon and then carpool in some time!

That's a good idea, PoetT! I had a couple of people in Independence who wanted to do a Sunday write-in, so I said, "Sure! Why not?" But yes, hopefully we'll be able to make it out to an official KC write-in, too!

Cheers,
Ditty

I'll be at the Antioch Library (branch of the Johnson County Library) on Wednesday evenings.

Wednesdays, 6pm - 9pm
Antioch Library, 8700 Shawnee Mission Parkway, Merriam, KS

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=Antioch%20Library%2C%208700%20Shawne...

There are outlets, free wi-fi, covered beverages allowed (Caribou Coffee is next door).

I'll reserve a meeting room, but they're tiny; I may move out to a nearby table in the southeast corner. I'll be the one in a black hat.

Hey, we had the same idea! I asked at a couple of different libraries about meeting rooms, but the best I could get was 2 Mondays, November 10th and 24th, at Central Resource. I went ahead and blocked off 5:00 to 9:00 for anyone who wants to come out with me :) Since that would leave 2 Mondays out, November 3rd and 17th, I thought I would head out to Scooter's those two nights as well.

So, to summarize:

Monday, November 3rd and November 17th: 5 - 9 at Scooter's Coffeehouse (Antioch and College)
http://maps.yahoo.com/map?q1=11106+Antioch+Rd%20Overland%20Park%20KS%20U...

Monday, November 10th and November 24th: 5 - 9 at Central Resource Library (87th Street and Farley)
http://maps.yahoo.com/map?q1=9875%20W.%2087th%20Street%20Overland%20Park...

I think we've covered just about every day of the week now...

Thanks so much for doing the booking for Tuesday write-ins in Overland Park. Both places are convenient for me, and I will probably drag hubby (driver) with me. I 've written the locations on my calendar. I doubt if hubby will be content for four hours, but I will try to show up at the beginning and leave when he gets bored. Or he can drop me off and pick me up if I don't stay too late, He can find things to read at the library. Do you want to have some snacks there (is it allowed?). I can bake somethng to bring to the library if you like. I imagine the coffee house would prefer to sell their wares in return for the space.

Poet T -- Sorry, Wednesdays are out for my driver. Maybe you will drop in on one of the Tuesday evenings so we can all meet the lady in the black hat. I am thinking about being the old lady in the gold jacket for the write-ins I get to. We will meet somewhere I am sure.

That's fine--uh, but Yasaibatake's are on Monday, right? Hate for you to show up and not find somebody!

speaking of which, I'll bring NaNoWriMo table tents (folded cardstock) tonight to KO, for anybody who's holding write-ins to be recognized. I've been to them where the few people who showed up didn't know each other as wrimos!

Meowtima and I are both volunteer baristas at The Keystone Coffeehouse in Broadway United Methodist Church (located at 74th and Wornall in Waldo) on various Saturdays.

We'll be open and making coffee/writing there on both November 1 and November 22 from 8 AM to 11:30 AM if you'd like to meetup, write, and get some coffee. (I know the 22nd is the Traveling Marathon of Awesomeness, but we'll be at The Keystone writing in the morning, so I'd thought I'd throw this out here for anyone interested.)

The space is really nice and there's room to spread out. We don't get a lot of traffic on Saturdays, so it's a great place to get work done. There's also free Wi-Fi. Sadly, we don't sell food, so you'll have to bring your own if you plan on snacking/breakfasting/brunching/lunching.

Yep, the place is just huge! We have sofas and wooden chairs, and there's minimal distraction. Plus, you get to make wit or me make caffeinated beverages for you if you feel like bothering us!

If you're nice enough, you might even be able to negotiate what kind of music we're going to play.

As I tend to write better in a group environment (I actually get nostalgic for the old collge computer lab), I'm going to try and join in on as many of these write-ins as possible. However, I don't have a laptop and I'm wondering how many of these venues would tolerate my typewriter. It's called a "quiet writer" but that's like saying a Honda is quiet compared to a Harley.
Think I could get by with it or should I just bring pen and paper?

Hey, Linewalker, I've had a couple of people asking that this year.

No problem at the Thursday night Writers Place. You saw the place at KO--it's big. There's a separate room upstairs (library/conference room) where I think a lot of writing will go on, but there will be no problem spreading out--to the landing, to the first floor. That upstairs room even has a typewriter. (We haven't test driven its volume.)

Now at a coffee shop like the Roasterie, I would worry about bothering the other patrons, really.

The only hope there might be that it's a pretty noisy place anyway, what with coffee grinding and speaker placement (with XM Radio or barrista's choice). With the acoustics, I often can't hear somebody five feet away. Still, I'm not sure about adding a typewriter to the mix.

(Our October write-in at the Writers Place was a wonderful contrast. We easily conversed along two long tables+.

We do have a lot of people write by hand at write-ins. But I sympathize. I know it's harder to get higher word count that way.

Hi All!

Jordan has been trying to get into the site all day and hasn't been able to. She was going to head up the meeting on Sunday at JP's but she has some family obligations that are going to make it impossible to be there. Far as I know we can do this next weekend and of course anyone who still wants to meet at JP's is welcome. Sorry about the late notice but you know how family things can be. Thanks for everyone's understanding and Happy NaNo Writing!

Please let me know if left anything off!

Anyone interested in a write-in this Saturday 11/8 at The Daily Dose? I was thinking an earlier morning write-in, say 8 or 10am?

Even though only PoetT and Linewalker showed up to the Waldo write-in last Saturday, Linewalker said she did like the prices at our little coffee house better and frankly I agree. If there is interest, I will keep showing up at Keystone coffee house on Saturdays from 8:00 to 11:30, even when oh_the_wit and I would not be baristaing on those days.

So, that's 11/8, 11/15, and 11/29 to be added to the write-in calendar if anyone's interested. The facilities are nice, the caffeine is cheap, and distractions are minimal. We are also typewriter friendly (I'm sure Linewalker appreciates that).

Thanks, Meowtima. I like that coffeehouse ... and the coffee is pretty good as well as being cheap. :-)
You can probably expect to see me and my case of hyperactive woodpeckers this Saturday, then -- though probably not before nine. (I get off work at 7:00 so I need time to change clothes, feed the plot bunny, etc.)

All,

it was nice to meet some of you at the coffee shop tonight. I'm Rob, the guy in the black jacket who failed to talk to most of you. I hope to get there earlier next time and maybe get more proper introductions.

I wonder if anyone has thought about trading excerpts from what we are writing to get others' opinions?

Hey all,

Due to Thanksgiving, one of our write ins have been canceled and, as we all know, all the coffee houses and bookstores are going to be ubercrowded starting on Friday, so I will be at the Roasterie tomorrow, or Wednesday if you will, night for at least a couple hours starting at five thirty or six in case anyone wants to stop by. I'll be the guy most likely cursing at his laptop that has a great big Q on the back. Just thought I'd throw it out, even if it was short notice.

There's a good chance wit and I will join Rob.

Furthermore, I still plan on showing up to the Waldo write-in on Saturday morning, which will not suffer the same fate as normal coffee houses.

I just heard from wit that there's is a chance that the Waldo write-in location might be closed on Saturday, as it was not listed open on the church calendar. I will still check it out to see if it's open at 8, and if it is open I will stay for a while. However, I will not be able to stay the whole time since I have a memorial service to attend later that morning.

For somewhere not as expensive the Roasterie, might I suggest Coffee Break on 54th and Troost? Spacious, comfortable, and reasonably priced, plus their eggnog latte is to die for. That is, if the Keystone Coffeehouse fails to open tomorrow.

Thanks for the heads-up, Meowtima. I was considering whether to come over tomorrow morning (though with reservations about having to work to ignore a football game on the big screen--I'd have to turn my back to it and plug in).

I'd understand if it's closed for the sake of the barista volunteers, though. Keep us posted.
