I went to the 10/06 write-in at the Writers Place and I

-worked in very comfortable surroundings at our newest digs, with 6 other KanMoWriMos
-worked on a story to send out somewhere before the end of October
-tried brainstorming, way too outloud, including a rather unfortunate reference to (no wait, it was Mike's fault) infant
mortality which led to (somebody else's)
-haiku about dead babies (but kudos to those who run on their behalf)

Other items of note:
-two generous wrimos kept us fueled with snacks both salty and sweet--Thanks! mo and inkwet; In November, we should set a schedule and put out the donation jar for our causes
-a suggested write-in soundtrack of atonement soundtrack, zombee, werewolves of london, love me dead, and (alas, and blast you, Dr Demento) dead puppies aren't much fun
-finding out what's on one ML's future criminal record
-sympathy abounded in the face of a perpetually booting and rebooting machine, on the torture rack of windows updates
-it can be both annoying and amusing to withhold caffeine from a minor
-words, words, words were written

I went to the first-ever-Writers-place write-in and I...

...confirmed that The Writers Place has a very good vibe.
...forgot, while pleasantly and maturely introducing myself to the new director, that I had my hair faux-hawked and was wearing glittery pirate earrings and a ZOMBIE PLOTBUNNIES t-shirt.
...gathered evidence for my hypothesis that Interesting Things Happen When You Say What You Want.
...tried to plot out one of my NNWMideas, then realized that nothing was happening in it, and then had everyone brainstorm a list of criminal behavior, which I may use for my characters in November.
...demonstrated that Sad and Wrong (and Funny) are not mutually exclusive qualities in poetry.
And then I found five dollars.

I went to the Oct. 6 Writers Place write-in and I...

- had an adventure getting to the write-in in the first place, consisting of me ending up in Brookside and realising I needed to have gone the other direction.

- learned that I can finish a medium iced coffee in under five minutes if a bus is coming and I don't want to take the coffee on the bus. Ooh, buzz.

- was pleased by the atmosphere at the Writers Place. It will be a fantastic Place to Write in November.

- laughed way too hard at the concept of dead babies, thereby convincing everyone (who was not already so convinced) that I am a sick and twisted person.

- was given a KitKat bar by Mike, who swore it was only a coincidence. I was unsure whether to believe him.

- tried to write about imaginary crime and oh my darling Clementine, but ended up considering throwing my protagonist off a cliff and resurrecting Clementine as a zombie.

- ordered Esther to wear her third zombie shirt to the next write-in, forgetting that I won't actually be there because I'm going to a concert. (So actually, she should wear it to the kick-off.)

- discovered that there are people who write poems about potatoes, thus fulfilling Esther's desire for a potato.

- learned the meaning of certain words that MS Word's autocomplete function suggests in fits of demonic possession.

- had to bite back the urge to star writing my novel NOW. This is possibly a good sign--in the past, I have sometimes had to spend October convincing myself my idea does not suck.

- decided to try an outline this year, despite my lifelong insistence that I despise outlines. I may still despise it in the end, but there's no harm in trying it.

- did not find five dollars.

I went to the Roasterie 10.19 write-in and I saw a tyrant writing on a Speak-and-Spell.
I saw a pretty lady painting with soda.
I saw a werewolf strip down.
I saw someone rocking out to elevator music.
I saw an evil team typing through a notebook on a laptop.
I saw B and B talking about warring systems throughout time.
I saw the black hat become a white hat and amidst crying about big heads turn back into a black hat.
good guys never wear black...but then there's the goths....and the visigoths....and they were a warring super-power.
I saw perfectly reasonable people descend into a discussion about draft picks and why "their" teams were sucking on the field like a bunch of Hoovers and Electroluxes.

I saw someone say that we all should shoot for 1,000,000 words written in a year. Nov 1, 2008 - October 31,2009.
I approve that message.

My addition to Mike's description for 10/19 is..........
and I
-was glad to see some fresh, eager faces at a write-in
-encouraged some slackers to show their faces here on the forum, with promises of bad language (but wait! we're All Ages Friendly!)
-shouldn't have got a coffee drink at 8:30, but still
-was glad that the Roasterie folks make their own whipped cream (not from a mix)
and most importantly
-watched inkwet help Steve McQueen in a great escape and pondered an adventure between him and Jane Austen, possibly including a trip into the lake country to hunt down the Legendary Black Beast of Aaaaarrrrrggggghhhhh (aka Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog)

Oh. And I almost got a vapor of an idea for something to write on in November. Breathe in and out.

I went to the Roasterie Oct 19th write-in, and I saw people working hard planning for November 1. Woo hoo!!
I learned that apparently my music was either better or at least more energetic than that being played by the good folks at the Roasterie.
I learned that Inkwet has a thing for Steve McQueen, even when he's only 5 inches tall and comes in a box, and she's better off for it.
I distinctly remember that conversation about "our" teams being a good one - mainly because the TITANS are still undefeated - not that I really expected less since they were playing the Chiefs.

1,000,000 words in a year. That's 83333.33333333333 and so on per month, or 2740 per day. Hmmmmmmm - why not? Gives me a goal on which to focus.

The good people at the Roasterie used to play much better music. The last time I went there, however, was a 2 hour Beach Boys marathon.

And, since my novel will be set in Kansas City, one of the characters will complain about the music.

I went to the October 19th write-in too, and I was amazed that people remembered me from a whole year ago.
I managed to get more prep done than I had the first two weeks of October combined.
I was (happily!) surprised by the inspiration provided by Steve McQueen. I was also happily surprised to find myself sitting next to a fellow Titans fan!
I stole far more ideas that I really should have...but I'm keeping them all! Bwahahahahahaha....

I went to the Writers' Place write-in and I...

...was late.

...watched helplessly as my computer took twenty minutes to boot up while contemplating finishing a software update. Then crashed spectacularly. And reverted to a stable earlier configuration. And eventually restored the operating system. Then rebooted. Then finally allowed me to start working for the evening. With less than 1% remaining battery life.

But the setting looked nice, even if I didn't get much (anything) done.

I went to the Roasterie write-in and I...

...was late again.

...agonized over what to write about in November. The leading contenders are a serious near-future science fiction tale heavy on the social / political commentary and a romantic comedy about pudding, chickens, and the end of the world. Close behind is the continuation of the saga that originally introduced the world to Evil Fuzzy Bunny Slippers™. However, if NaNoWriMo has taught me anything it's to expect the Spanish Inquisition. So I'll likely be writing something completely different.

Collectively, we have a fairly good memory, especially for familiar faces. Names... well, some of us do better than others. I've been accused of forgetting my own name a time or two. Glad to see you back for another year.

Okay, I'm here, I'm here... and no objectionable language yet unless you count the Qbert impersonation in reference to the guilt monkeys.

Edit - Interesting... my signature only seems to show up when I quote somebody else's post. Hmmm....

I went to the Kick-off and there was writing done there and...

I saw Joselyn win! (I wanted to ask her about Temp) And ZenFajita too (one eyed cats always win - no depth perception giving them an unforeseen advantage)
I learned that Michelle is going to write an amazing story - and put that inner Type A editor on a bus to Kentucky.
I met the great Caracabe!
I saw the elusive empulse and his better half leogrrrl (extra r for effect)
Meowtima was there, but somehow was invisible. A superpower that I always choose.
I heard that Tony's pinkie was not so ouchie and he will be back next week to improve on the 175 yards (!) of total offense.

I saw PoetT and Inkwet_image (the ink changes color once it dries) do a fantastic job in leading the charge. Between black hat and white hat charm and humor, they covered all the bases (and now it's just 5 days to starting that swing for the fences).

I learned that Bastion will stay up on Halloween until 12:15, and then starting writing obligations met, will go to sleep like a baby... sleep is for December.

So many other things....

I went to the kick-off and met some nice people.

  • really dig the black hat/white hat thing PoeT and Inkwet had going on.
  • saw oleary! the legend! we shook hands!
  • met Wes, Ecco, Drake, and Januarie, but I was too dumb to write down their forum account names.

I was invisible because halfway through the meeting I had to run out and re-park my car due to my blatant disregard for city parking laws and your safety.

Had a great time and met a lot of new people. I am horrid with names so If I have to ask several times, please forgive me.

Well, that was some epic fail on my part. *facepalm* I did NOT make it to the kickoff, and I missed you all terribly. I blame the migraine I had all day Saturday for making me so out of it that by Sunday, I couldn't remember simple things like OH HEY, KICKOFF PARTY. I realised at about 10 pm on Sunday that it had happened that evening. I'm so sorry and disappointed that I missed it--I hope you'll all tell me stories of what happened. And you people I didn't get to see at said kickoff, I hope you'll come to at least one write-in. :( There's no way I'm missing November write-ins (you may actually see me TWICE A WEEK since my Thursdays are gloriously freeee in November) or TGIO, so you certainly haven't seen the last of me.

I am a very sulky Kit right now, but at least I got some fabulous brainstorming done over the weekend. Shan't say too much, but some new character facets popped into existence, and I am so freaking excited to find out what happens at the end of this story in my head. I'm trying a bit of scratch outlining this year, even though I always said I would never do that, and lo and behold, it has actually helped me. Perhaps I won't have so much trouble with my previous years' major issue of "hmm, I'm halfway through November and I have no more story--no matter, I'll throw in some gypsies and see what happens!" Yeah, that only works when it...works. :p

I'm really sorry, Meowtima and all you other misparkers--I should have brought the no-parking restrictions to everyone's attention. I'll be sure that info gets into the next mass e-mail, as well as the write-in thread. And afterward, I realized we should have stopped and waited for you all to get back. ("At my back I always hear / time's winged chariot hurrying near" with no tow truck to haul it off.) And no live recording, alas!

    silverd/Kit,
    (((((((((((((((((((((((hugs)))))))))))))))))))))))))
A couple of us were talking about where you could be! I am sorry you missed it. I know about the forgetting thing. One of our household didn't make it to a volunteer job on Saturday because we all totally forgot, amid the KO planning, and didn't actually remember until this morning. We all felt so baffled that we let it happen.

I'm glad we'll get to see you at write-ins. I'll have a goody bag on hand for you (NaNoDie card, sticker, and tiny space ship to boldly take your story where you've never taken one before).

I did feel so baffled when I realised! I'm still confused as to how I managed to forget, because I'm usually the one in my family who has everyone's schedules memorised. I can't remember if I even noticed it on my calendar that morning and it just didn't register, or what. *boggle* Oh yay, thank you for having NaNo toys for me! :D Let's see if I have this straight--the next write-in is this Sunday at the Roasterie, right? I can't imagine I'll forget that one, given that I should be a few thousand words into a story...

I went to the Nov. 1 Waldo write-in and
-wrote more in 2 hours there than I did in 2 hours at home.
-got to listen to the old familiar rhythm of Linewalker's manual typewriter
-understood the responsibility of Meowtima and oh_the_wit in their barrista positions
-put "mustard" into my novel, inspired by Frederick? the Great or whoever put it into his coffee (i'm assuming the powder, not mixed with vinegar and toxic yellow dye...)

And oh yeah, the trip there in the fog reminded me of the next quotation I put on my desktop:
"Writing a novel is like driving a car at night. You can see only as far as your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." --E.L. Doctorow

I went to the first official KanMoWriCo write-in today at the Roasterie and...

  • Watched inkwet play with pois
  • Was told by oh_the_wit I had a huge, all-revealing gash on the back of my jeans
  • Wrote more than 3000 words there
  • Talked about employment and engineering with mike and Mr. Structural Engineer dude
  • Compiled a sizable list of chick flicks to peruse and use in my novel, thanks to mike and inkwet
  • Saw Wes and DonnaDrake, whom I met at the kickoff.
  • Ate half a baguette

    I went to the 11/2 Roasterie write-in and I...

    - overheard bits of many interesting barista conversations, such as the following:

    1. Barista 1: Wait, they can't see us!

Barista 2: Sure they can. See? *points at cameras*

*baristas mutter together for a minute*

Barista 2: But what about Obama's tax plan?

    2. the same Barista 1: WHAT did you DO?!

the same Barista 2: I was too busy doing all your dishes!

    - spelled "laissez-faire" out loud, correctly and in perfect unison with MJ

    - listened to happy synthy pop music that sounded very much like Jpop, except that it was sung in guttural German

    - had a word war with Esther, Teri, and several others...and wrote 1,075 words in 15 minutes, thus continuing my streak of epic (seriously, I don't know where this is coming from...)

    - got my total day's wordcount to 4,400 and my total wordcount to 14,800

    - had my chair stolen by Esther, but she gave it back

    - was picked on immense amounts by EVERYONE THERE (I am easy to laugh at, I know ;p) but mostly by Esther

    - advanced my plot!

    Nov. 2 at Roasterie

-was amazed at our largest write-in ever--30 people spread throughout the building and outside. Wow!
-was glad to see that lots of wc happened, among both the social and the reserved
-only laughed at silver_d because her sense of fun is so infectious; bows to her superiority in word war
-did not laugh at wardrobe malfunctions (Mr. Engineer is jmedward)
-killed a rat in my novel

Hey, has anyone checked out the Word Count Scoreboard?
    http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/wordcount_stats
KC is currently # 40 in overall wc, # 78 by average wc per person. That counts all the people who have set their Home Region to Kansas City. (Hmm, St. Louis is ahead in overall, but behind in average...)

    Keep it up!

I went to the 11/2 write-in at The Roasterie and...

--ate a bran muffin and drank iced soy chai lattes
--I admit it, I laughed at silverdolphin a bit.
--sat on the edge of my chair and wrote 2317 words in my story
--loved Esther's ideas for titles, like "One Dave At A Time."
--then I found that one of my characters was not named Dave at all. He's Nicky.
(what? "In the Nicky of Time?") (no. sorry)
--want to keep Dave and make him a bit creepy.

I am now looking forward to my writing time tonight, when I explore what Nicky likes to eat and whether that will help my heroine get her own appetite back.

…laughed at silverdolphin just ‘cause I could. Maybe we should schedule laugh-at-silver-time every week. ;)
