I hear through the grapevine that Java City is closed, but I still would like to do a Halloween Kick-Off, like we have done in years past. I had -so much fun- last year. (And y'all introduced me to the Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny) Does anyone have any suggestions for a good place for us to go? Nothing else in Davis is both open all night or close to it and a good place to go and write. (Burgers and Brew is open 'till like 2am on Fridays now, but I would hate to try and write there.)

Yes, Java California is no more. Starbucks killed it, especially the drive-through Starbucks just around the corner.
Kat and I have been pondering this issue. The IHOP in Dixon is open 24 hours, so that's one possibility, though not a very good one. We've also been considering places like Denny's, Baker's Square, IHOP, or whatever in Sacramento. If worse comes to absolute worst, we could have the kickoff at my house, but I'm not too keen on that.
(By the way, I did start a thread about this called "Venue, Venue, VENUE".)

Sorry :) I was looking over threads for something about Halloween in the title. I am lazy about searching.
Almost everything in Davis has free wireless internets at this point. I don't know if IHOP does, but the advantage of somewhere like that is that we could probably talk them into letting us have a room all to ourselves.
(I think part of what killed Java California is that it primarily appealed to students who want to study late, and there's nowhere in Davis to do that. But students are poor, and I hear there were huge problems with people coming in, hogging tables, and buying -nothing-. And then they're all sad when the place they love so much closes, all the while not seeing that they're part of the reason that it did.)

Any chance we could get Common Grounds to stay open with the promise of lots of business? That would be a really fun place to meet.

I can almost promise you the answer would be no, although you'd be free to try. I hang out there, and we couldn't provide the kind of business that they're used to. There's a good crowd in there almost all the time.
The owner -might- agree to it for other reasons, like for the 'indie culture' thing or... I don't know why he would. I mean you could ask, but I can't see it happening.
(They have started carrying stuff from cicolat, or however it's spelled, BTW.)

well, I am not sure how many people you guys are talking about here, but I feel that I should point out that Ciocolat is open until 2 am Thur-Sat now.
And, if worst comes to worst, I can probably provide the sun room& garage in my house, if people are into the idea (of course, the kitchen& bathroom would be available too)...the said sun room& garage are anything but fancy, but you guys are welcome to them if needed...and/or stay for breakfast.
P.S. Although now I think about it, we don't have heater in either the sunroom nor the garage...I wonder if our living room might be okay if I talk to the other people in the house...

Oh, god. The idea of being high on writer fumes AND chocolate fumes for hours and hours at a time when I usually have very little self control...
It thrills and disturbs. (Wish they were open past 2, though,)

That sounds fun.
Even though uh, I probably cannot do it since I have a double birthday party to go to and that will run at least until midnight. Then again, I wonder if I could get someone to drop me off at Ciocolat after the party breaks up...
But probably not. *sigh* Freaking Scorpio birthdays en masse...

Where's the party at? If you wanted to knock off an hour-ish early, I could theoretically pick you up, as long as it's not TOO far away.

I haven't been to Ciocalat (SP?) in years, but I recall it was pretty darn small.

Yes, Ciocolat is small - it only has seating for a handful of people at scattered tables. It'd be a fun place to get snacks, but it's not really suited to write-ins or meetups.

Does Ciocolat have a room upstairs though? I saw an advertisement about "high tea," and I don't see how they do it downstairs (where it is tiny). I can call there and ask.
How late is Fox and Goose open, anyone know? They definitely support the indie thing, and there is a lot of room in the dining area (not the music area).
Argh, this shouldn't be so hard!

if I am not mistaken, ciocolat simply hold their high teas downstairs by combining tables and throw a tablecloth over them.
so....
P.S. Is the halloween kick-off in this thread meant for everyone in the region? or is this one catered to Davis people? I am confused.

It's for everyone :) I think the Davis people are being active and chatty, and we know Davis locations, so those are the ones we're spitting out.

The more I think about it, the more issues I have with the Halloween kickoff event. See my upcoming post in a brand new thread!
