This is my fourth year doing NaNo, and the first time I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing. Usually by now, I'd be busily outlining or at least making notes. Now, nothing, and it kind of feels good. Come Nov 1, I'm just gonna go with the flow. Knowing me, it's going to be contemporary romance, but that's about all I know.

What about you? Any ideas? What's your plan for the month?

Originally I thought I might just wing it, but last weekend I uncovered a story idea I had scribbled down ages ago, so I think I'm going to try to finally write that. It'll be a WWII/Holocaust historical novel.

I really need a plot outline though, heh, or I'll be typing like a headless chicken come November.

Mine won't really be a novel, although there will be a theme connecting the parts. I want to take three characters I've worked with before and have them write letters to each other, move in and out of a script, take turns playing the same roles in a short story, pop up in nonfiction essays, and other stuff. I think one character exists in the mid-'90s and the other two live around ten years from now, so although they can communicate they may not all be able to fit on stage at one time. There will probably be two other characters of mine who are trying to find them, but they're aliens -- they come from a different timeline. So the trail of the three MCs is going to look different in the aliens' world. What's a one-act play for the MCs could exist as a sculpture in the aliens' reality.

I think mine is going to be a dark fantasy, very David Lynchian feel to it.

The title is "The Belldog", taken from the Brian Eno/Cluster song.

I'm writing a fantasy novel where the main character *gasp* isn't some great prophesied hero of legend! He's just a kid who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think I might call it 'The Betrayer'

I'm writing an urban fantasy (though I guess it might also qualify as a Young Adult novel). It centers around a school for teenagers with special powers. Where this differs from other stories of this kind is that the students are encouraged (in some cases, required) to fight each other. I also am injecting a heavy dose of intrigue and paranoia into the story, with the main character searching for a terrorist hidden among the rest of the student body and all of the students having their own secrets. And to top it off what I hope to make my defining feature in my writings, moral ambiguity: while each of the different factions have their own logic and reasons for doing what they're doing, it really is a case of "bad guys vs. worse guys".

Wow! That sounds really neat, Uyanga. I'd love to see the results!

A few years ago I wrote a short story about a motherless young woman raised by her older sisters and an emotionally disengaged dad. It's always wanted to be a novel, so this year it gets a chance. The MC gets help in her coming of age from an "auntie" she discovers through a letter hidden in an old desk she buys at auction. All I know so far is that she abandons the boring job her sisters think is perfect for her, and apprentices herself to a cranky old guy as a woodworker. Oh. Wait. That means I have to go talk to woodworker! Yay, research!

This is my first year, so I'm a little bit nervous about getting 50k. I'm going to write a romance novel with a hint of magic. I have yet to think on a title other than "Be Careful What You Wish For." Which I really don't like.

I'm sure I'll think up something by the end of November. lol

I'm writing an urban fantasy sort of thing. Very Jim Butcher/Dresden Files esque.

A wizard takes on a young apprentice. Set in Colorado Springs with much snark.

I'm going for either an occult fantasy (the idea for which has been laying around, half-baked for a couple years), or a semi-humorous space opera. Hmm, think I could combine the two? Naw.

This is my first year doing NaNo, so i was nervous about not knowing what to write about. But this past weekend i came up with a cool idea for a Young Adult Fantasy novel. It goes around the idea of portals to an alternate dimension, but there's a twist--when you go through the portal, you can't get back out. That was the initial idea, anyway. But since Saturday i've done alot of research on scientific stuff that could help to explain the portals, and i've come up with an even better catch to the whole alternate dimension idea--but i'm not giving that one away. I've been outlining the science, the characters, and the plot like crazy, and i can not wait to start. it's driving me insane. I only hope that i can put aside my analytical edit--everything-athousand-times nature long enough to write 50,000 words in one month. Eek!

I sort of know how I'm going to start this off, and how I'm going to end it....

It's a horror story about a girl who's cursed with a number curse ever since Sept. 11, 2001. The numbers: 911. Each time she sees the number, something bad always happens to her... and now, 2008, it's threatening her life. It sort of goes along the lines of having 7 years of bad luck.

I don't know, it sounds good in my head. Haha.

I just decided to do NaNoWriMo so I haven't really had much time to think about what I want to do. I had a couple of stories that I would love to focus on that only have a few thousands words but I guess that's not true to the contest so I'll have to come up with something different.

I have an idea for a murder mystery. I also have an idea for an erotic book. I just had another idea for another murder mystery based on something that happened around here, or a combination of a couple of stories -- I can see three stories that happened fitting together very nicely.

This is my first New Hampshire NaNo - I just moved here a week ago. So while it's still up for change due to inspiration, I'm going to be writing a sort of sci-fi fantasy steampunk mix. Which I may make into a graphic novel. Not sure. :/

I'm going to be writing about a small village in New Hampshire that practices child sacrifice to a monster masquerading as a god. No one ever leaves or moves in, in fact outsiders don't even notice it as they drive by. I think might write it from the point of view of the children.

I'm planning on writing my novel about an average modern day girl who finds out that a person in her life is actually a time traveler from the future. In the future, the MC is a really mega legendary movie star. The time traveler accidentally does something that causes the MC to not meet the Hollywood casting director who "discovered" her and gave her her first starring role. The MC and time traveler have to try to fix this before it's too late.

I'm also planning a twist at the end, but I can't tell you what it's going to be! :-)

That sounds cool. Both of my (late) grandfathers served in WWII, and my dad recently found his father's journals from the war. I've always wanted to read them and try to construct a story from them. He didn't see much action, so it might be a view of a less-violent side of the war.

Uyanga's idea sounds neat, too!

As for me, last year, I definitely winged it. I knew what the general idea of the story would be, but that's about it. This year, I have a much more solid base, I think. Basically, it's about a guy who enlists the help of a woman who isn't quite human to win over the love of his life. The help doesn't consist of any sort of plan to win the girl over; instead, the woman warps reality (sort of). My biggest worry is that, while I think there's a lot of possibilities, I'm not really sure it's going to be all that unique of a story.

I am thinking of calling it "Keep Yourself Warm" - it's the title of a song by a band called Frightened Rabbit, who is sort of inspiring me this year. I may go with one of their lyrics, though.

A few days ago, I posted I was going to write a thriller, but was inspired to switch to a horror novel.

Here's why: http://1667wordsaday.wordpress.com/2008/10/28/switchin-gears/

A Thriller: No Title Yet...

Working as an orderly at a large Boston hospital isn't dishonorably discharged marine, Brad Stone's idea of excitement. That is until he's sent to pick up a corpse in ICU that turns out to be very much alive...and under the care of a beautiful, but radical-minded nurse. The "corpse" is the one-time love interest of a high-level terrorist who's ordered her dead for trying to "contaminate" him, and nurse Rachel's looking to help the young woman get away from his assassins and militant thugs. Rachel also has ideas about getting away with some of the terrorists millions as well -- and someone with Brad Stone’s talents could come in very handy.

The title is "In the Pink" and it's going to be intelligent chick-lit about women empowered by their femininity ... and how that affects the men - and unempowered (or disempowered) women - in their lives. It is going to be a practice in therapeutic writing, to a degree!

Good luck to everyone! I am so looking forward to this!

Third year and absolutely no idea what I'm going to be writing about. Because thinking about my story means that I need to have free time to sit down and think about my stories, and I have no free time so that means no thinking has happened.

Me, I'm writing a straight up revenge story masked as a detective story. I think. I'm not sure how to describe it, but basically, by the end, the protagonist gets revenge on the people that wronged him, so saying it's a revenge story is a pretty safe bet. Should be interesting, since it'll be equal parts mystery and action, and mystery is not something I've written before.
