It’s NaNoWriMo’s tenth year! From Adelaide to the Yukon Territories, on every continent (except Antarctica) over 100,000 would-be authors are taking up the challenge of 50,000 words in 30 days. On November 30th, tens of thousands of us will realize the life-long dream of writing a novel “someday.”
This event is possible because of the energy and optimism of a tiny staff at the Office of Letters and Light and an army of volunteers. Because the Office is a non-profit, your donations are essential. It takes a lot of money to keep servers humming, websites up and running, the office functioning, and the coffeepot perking. NaNoWriMo is free to everyone, but it has lasted this long because people like you donate to the cause.
There are many ways to give something back to the organization that gives so much to you, and many of them take no money at all. You can:
* Donate directly by credit card, PayPal, or check
* Purchase some fine and stylish merchandise from the store
* If you are monetarily challenged, set GoodSearch as your search engine, and Yahoo will donate a penny for every search
* Set up a sponsorship page at Firstgiving.com and invite your friends and family to donate on your behalf
* Or, see this page for more ideas on donating when you are broke
The Washington Post has estimated that if NaNoWriMo's growth rate remains constant, by the year 2027, every single American will write a novel in November. Why not every person in the world? Please donate today to keep NaNoWriMo alive and strong – and help make it so!

Wonderful news!
If you have an account on Live Journal, they will give $1 to NaNoWriMo's Young Writer's Program if you win this year. There are lots of us on LJ, so this could be HUGE. You need to register on the special NaNoWriMo LJ post here.

WOW!
I would like to report that the amazingly generous Wrimos at last night's kickoff slipped $54.52 into the donation coffeepot while I wasn't looking. Once the coffeepot hits $100, we can get another poster! Plus "The Austin Penguins" on the site's "brought to you by list" for all to see.

Amazing news! In a little over a week, the donation coffeepot has filled up with $146.52. This is hugely early in the month for such a number. Kudos and a special thank you to whoever slipped in the 50 dollar bill at Mozarts!
Instead of sending the money in right away, I'm going to wait for $250. At that amount, we get way more swag for prizes at the TGIO. So - only $103.48 to go. But we'll need to get it fast - say by mid-month - to make sure we have time to get the swag mailed to us.
Catch me or Rebecca at a write-in and donate some change, or buy a raffle ticket from us or ciri. Or, if your write-in host is willing (I know kswope usually collects donations), you can donate to them and they'll get the money to me. We promise!
Meanwhile, back at the Word Count Scoreboard, if you are affiliated and Homed with Austin, and you've donated directly to NaNo, your donation is included in our total. Which is: $820, putting us as the 15th most-givingest region in the world - and only slightly behind New York City. Go penguins!

Hi all!
Between the donation coffee pot and the raffle, we have an amazing $193.52 to send into headquarters so far. We'll soon be able to make a donation of $250 on behalf of the Austin Penguins. We'll be listed as Mighty Catalysts for Literary Righteousness on the "Brought to You By" page, and receive the following (for TGIO doorprizes or to add to the raffle prizes):
Here's a lovely picture of what we'll receive:
