On Oct 29th, I'll be driving down to Milledgeville for a reading by Scott Russell Sanders, http://www.scottrussellsanders.com/ English professor and author of personal essays and the memoir "A Private History of Awe", as well as "Writing from the Center" and several other books.
I'm planning on driving down by myself no matter what, but I thought I'd put the word out in case there were any essayists or memoirists who might want a little pre-NaNo inspiration. I'd love to carpool! :-)
I thought I'd generalize the title of this thread though, in case there are any other events that are not specifically write-ins or NaNoWriMo-related that folks might be interested in.
Thanks!
Alicia

Good thread idea!
I've got a couple of things I'll be attending over the next week and a half:
October 18 - SCBWI Southern Breeze "Writing and Illustrating for Kids" fall conference. SCBWI is the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and Southern Breeze is their local chapter (GA, AL, MS). I write young adult fiction and have been to several of their conferences, all of which have been extremely helpful. This upcoming conference, in Birmingham, AL, features an agent from Writers House, several editors from major NY publishers, and Newbery Award-winning author Paul Fleischman. Should be great. I don't know if registration is still open, but the website for Southern Breeze is worth bookmarking if you're an Atlanta author interested in writing for children or teens. It's www.southern-breeze.org. They do a spring conference in Atlanta every year, which also usually has 2 or 3 editors and a top author as visiting speakers.
October 21 - JOHN GREEN! One of the absolute best YA authors out there will be visiting Decatur's Little Shop of Stories in support of his just-about-to-release third novel, Paper Towns. His other two novels, Looking for Alaska and An Abundance of Katherines, are brilliant, geeky, hilarious, and wonderful. Along with his brother, he's also a YouTube star! His website is www.sparksflyup.com. His reading / signing in Decatur starts at 6:30 PM.
Also, I'll put in a plug for the Atlanta Writers Club (www.atlantawritersclub.org), which meets the third Saturday of every month at Georgia Perimeter College's Dunwoody campus. I won't be there this month because of the aforementioned conference, but I usually attend their meetings and events. I liken each monthly meeting to a mini-conference -- there are usually two speakers who discuss various aspects of the writing life, be it crafting good dialogue, revision, time management, or getting an agent.

On October 18th, Gwinnett County Public Library will be hosting the second annual Gwinnett Reading Festival at the Gwinnett County Fairgrounds.
There are all kinds of fun activities for all ages. I went last year and had a great time! If you have a chance to see Carmen Agra Deedy I would recommend getting there early. Last year it was standing room only.
Laurie, have fun seeing John Greene! You'll have to tell me about how dorkily adorable he is next time I see you.

If you like essays and memoirs, Hollis Gillespie will be at Bound To Be Read Books at 7:00 p.m. Saturday, October 18th. She's talking about her book, Trailer Trashed: My Dubious Efforts Toward Upward Mobility. I just finished it and enjoyed it. www.BoundToBeReadBooks.com.

Anyone know of anything happening in Buckhead or Midtown? I'd love to know.

I don't know of any specific readings that are coming up in Buckhead or Midtown, but the Margaret Mitchell House always has a full roster of author events. It's usually about $10 - $15 to get in.
Also, the Borders Buckhead (on P'tree Rd. across from Phipps) and the Barnes and Noble on Peachtree also host a lot of author events.
If you're talking about NaNo-specific events in those areas, there's a weekly write-in at SIP on Lindbergh on Monday from 6 - 8 PM.
