Has anyone in our region applied to be the official ML? I was just curious. I read somewhere that they get some sort of kit to help organize events, and since we've been largely self-assembling the past couple years, we haven't needed anything, but it'd be a shame to not be getting stuff that we could be getting!

Anyway, the application for new MLs comes off the site at the end of this weekend (I guess on the 13th), so I thought I'd throw that out there if someone was motivated to apply last-minute. I was considering it myself, though I'll be out of town for about a week and a half of November proper...

Ah, after poking around North I see that Barbara applied for the position at least. Kind of strange that the NaNo powers that be insist that ND fall under North's jurisdiction, since their events have been concentrated over in LaPorte County for as long as I've been here.

Yeah, I applied, but Lindsay (who picks the MLs) sent me a note telling me that while our group would benefit from one, she thought I should take this year to really work on hitting my numbers and winning once (I started late last year and so just barely missed the word count total). She said Anni was the ML for the northern region and that I should see if she needed help with stuff...so, what this all boils down to is that I sent Anni a note b/c she's in Valpo and doing the kick-off and stuff there, but maybe if she's willing to work with me I can arrange stuff in the South Bend/Mishawaka/ND area for us in conjunction with the North region.

Will keep you posted! But next year, I think that ML is mine....beware!

Ok. Well, I applied this morning, just to see what would happen. I'm perfectly willing to cede the position to you in the future, Barb. :-) I just figured having a ML would be better than not. Or at least different!

Go Josh!

I should apply one of these years, seeing I was a co-ML for Bloomington back in 2004. I'm just so hit or miss with finishing that I don't think I'd get accepted!

Oh, knock yourself out, man! lol. It would be nice to have an ML locally, cuz it looks like they send out cool motivational type stuff, which is why I applied myself. If you get it an need an assist, let me know. I still haven't heard from the Northern ML, so I don't know what's going on there. But, because I like to multitask and see just how many things I can juggle, I was already thinking about the kickoff event...and since it starts on Saturday this year, and our region caters mostly to the college crowd (although I'm no longer a student, thank whatever stars you like), maybe we could hit up a late-nite eatery like IHOP in Mishawaka or Nick's Patio in South Bend and start in at midnite. Or does anyone else have any ideas? I just think it would be fun to get this started with a bang!

Hopefully we can plan something here or at our meet and greet the Sunday before, but I think a kickoff where we get together to write the first words of our novels together at the stroke of Saturday, November 1, would be a lot of fun. I know it's Halloween and all, but still. If there's any interest, I think that's enough! :-) It's not every November we get five whole weekends to write, after all.

Guess it's official now!

I'm not sure how I let this surprise me, but there's a magic ML area in the forums where the various MLs meet and post ideas and stuff, and... wow, overwhelming. These people really go all-out with planning and parties and little regional trinkets. Hope you'll spare me if I'm a little more laid back about life in general. We are classified as a "small" region, so at least I have that working for me, hehe.

Basically I have to make sure we have meet-ups of some kind, including at least a kick-off and an "it's over" meet-up. And I have to have a Google Calendar and encourage donations and moderate the forums. I think we can handle that.

Anyway, if anyone's interested in learning more about MLs or has ideas for meet-up activities or whatever, feel free to share in the forums or at the meet-ups themselves. Otherwise, I'm going to take a very "it's not broken so I'm not fixing it" approach to our region. :-)

I probably won't be able to make a kick off party if it's on Halloween night now, because I might actually be in Oregon for work from the 29th until the 1st. :( But, if we have a get together on Saturday eveningish sometime, I may be able to make it, if I'm not too jet lagged. Boo! At least I can start my novel on the plane ride home!

I don't know how many people will be interested in meeting up on October 31st at night, anyway, but I'm certainly game. It may be that the "kick-off" is just everything happening on the 1st/2nd: first words, write-in, meet-up. The first "official" event of NaNo '08 will be our Meet and Greet on the 26th, anyway. And there'll be another meet-up on the evening of the 2nd at B&N... so, there will be chances to gather. :-)

Congrats on the ML, Josh!

And thank God for five weekends to write...oh, wait a sec, I forgot. I work weekends. Oh well. I am still hoping to do a stroke of Nov. 1 kick-off...pretty please with cherries on top?! I snagged my brother's old laptop and I'm ready to write when you guys are. Plus, baby Roland is usually asleep by midnight.
