Well its time to set up the write-ins. I will try to get something where everyone gets to go to one.
However, since I am not familiar with all the areas of Metro-Detroit, any recommendations would be wonderful!
In the past we had done
Z's villa in Detroit: 42 Piquette St; Detroit, MI 48202; (313) 874-2680
Traditionally this has been wed nights - it only has one plug and we usually are upstairs.
Decent food, decent drinks.
Is there a better day or place to meet for Detroit?
Usually we try to do Ferndale area - last year I don't think we ever found a good place to meet up.
There is already a thread discussing Oakland U/Auburn hills area and Gross Pointe area so we'll discuss those two on that link.
Where else shall we meet? When would we like to meet?
Thank you everyone, can't wait to get writing.
Cheers Tiffany

Well, we know that the Coffee Beanery in Ferndale is closed, but there is a great one in Berkley right on Woodward. Good parking, and as long as we let Dan kow, it shouldn't be a problem.
There is always the Royal Oak Library, except there's no eating or drinking. They closed at 9.
Buffalo Wild Wings is in Ferndale has free wifi as does the Royal Oak Brewery. Again, depending on the night, we should be able to secure a few tables without a problem.
OOO - I almost forgot - Black Lotus in Clawson - 14 MIle and Main loves groups and crowds. They've been trying to get my knitting group up there for months, and during the week, they are very quiet. Perhaps that place?

I would LOVE to participate in some in Macomb County! Mount Clemens has a great coffeehouse right across from the court building called Conga that loves writers. I'll have to check out the plug situation, but it's a comfy place to play.
Here's the info:

I like Black Lotus, too. It's a brewpub with pretty good beer, also decent food. Looks like nondrinkers are also welcome.

This may be a little selfish, but can we move the Z's Villa write-ins to a different day? I know they're traditionally on Wednesdays, but this year I can't make it on Wednesday, I have a night class. Any chance it could be on a Thursday or a weekend night? Please?

I have to agree with hobbitgwen up there, even thoguh I'm not in Detroit, I plan on driving down for one of the write-in's at least. And I've also got Wednesday night class, so Thursdays or weekend night would be good too, but I'm being a little selfish too, and from a different city.

We've had some Sunday evening write-ins at Malarky's in Westland in the past for those of us west-siders. We've also used Caribou Coffee on Haggerty at 6 Mile in Livonia/Northville a few times too. My schedule is a little more open this year, so I may try to make it to some in other areas if I need some additional forced writing time!

I'd definitely be interested in Malarky's and Caribou. Didn't people also meet at the Westland Library a few times?

Despite living in the Metro Detroit area for all of my life, I'm horrible with mental images of the layout of the area.
Which of these write-in locations is closest to, say, Lincoln Park (Where I live) or Dearborn Heights (where I work)?

Wow! Great response, sorry I've been so absent.
Okay: love the idea of Black Lotus in Clawson: what day is good for folks? I'm leaning towards tues or wed but What do folks think?
Detroit: Z's can definately move, Thursday night work? If there is a better location than Z's let me know.
Macomb: Love the idea of Conga, what day works best? How about Monday?
Westland: We have indeed done Westland in the past I'm not sure how many folks are in that area or are interested.
Love the idea of Malarky's on weekend evenings.
Lincoln Park (I think Detroit is nearest-so Z's), Dearborn Heights is close to Westland
I'm going to try to put together the calender with the write in dates and a map of locations. I just can't picture all the places anymore.
Thanks for all you guys input! Cheers sheepgoddess

Wow, a fan club... :-)
Black Lotus is close to me, with good brews, Z's Villa has that certain je ne sais quois, Sundays at Panera have a good crew, even without the drinking. So many choices! I like all three, though this year you'll see something strange from me, a big dose of moderation. Doctor's orders, though he doesn't mind the occasional beer.
I think it's important to have a write-in in the city. (Everyone cringing at that sentiment -- we go, we enjoy the place and the waitresses enjoy us, we always get a lot done, and the only people who get into trouble are in our novels.)

Yeah, Dearborn Heights and Westland are probably closest among locations mentioned. I go to school at UM-Dearborn, so if someone wants a separate write-in further that way, I'd be down with that too.

I'll for sure be "hosting" a weekly write-in on Monday nights, at Oakland University. I work at the campus library, and staked out good areas. No wait staff or kitchen, but plenty of plugs and tables to spread out. I'm sure my boss, the building manager, would give me access to her coffee pot.
I also have an on-campus apartment that could hold a cozy dozen or so writers, where I could crank out continuous coffee and hot cocoa.
So, East-siders and anyone else willing to pay that much in gas are welcome to come!

As of October 25, here are the Detroit area write-ins listed by location. The categories are arbitrary, but don't take them too seriously. Normal type means confirmed, italic type means tentative.

Details are scattered around this forum, but this shows there are plenty of opportunities to see other WriMos in person. Now a few people just need to get rid of the italics, and the rest of us need to show up. :-)

This will be my second year participating in the NaNoWriMo and I didn't get to any of the write ins last year. I hope to make a few this time. Black Lotus is about 1/2 mile from my house so that'll probably be the place for me. I believe on Tuesdays there's a guitarist that plays there - I met him when he played for my belly dance class one day. He was pretty cool. That'd be nice background music!
But Wednesday are just as cool for me!

Dearborn would be good. I think I saw at least one other person ask for it.
How about the Little Cafe... the address is 22180 Michigan Avenue.
It says on their website they welcome regular meetings of small groups. Don't know about the plug situation, but I think they have free wi-fi (as long as you're eating or drinking something) so they must be set up for laptop users...
Mon or Tues, early evening, say 5-7 or 6-8? How does that suit those interested in the Dearborn area?

Yep, Little Cafe is across MI Ave from Starbucks. I can't think of any free parking there, but there is a paid lot right behind that complex and two parking structures across the street.
