Hey everyone! The schedule of events for this year is still in the works and should be posted in the next week, but in the meantime I wanted to see if anyone had suggestions for a place for a midnight write-in.
I always start writing at midnight, usually with a few fellow WriMos in the AIM window, starting right along with me. But I wanted to take advantage of NaNo starting on a Saturday this year and have WriMos sitting right next to me when it's time to start writing!
The trouble is, I can't come up with a good place to host this. There would have to be room for a dozen people or so, preferably have Wi-fi and food and definitely be open 'til at least 2:00 am. I suppose we could take over an IHOP or Perkins, but I'd rather have a place where we're not very spread out.
Any ideas? Would anyone even be interested in a midnight write-in?

You know I'm interested, but I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions for a site. I'll let you know if I think of anything.

I'd be completely into this too, but IHOP's the only place I can think of that has wi-fi and is open 24 hours. But maybe we'll get lucky and find a section to take over?

If you're talking about the one near Target [Wolfchase], then I have to point out that what used to be the smoking section is usually available on weekends, though I have to admit I haven't been there in a while.

Ooh, I didn't know IHOP had Wi-Fi. Maybe this Friday I'll check out the Wolfchase one after work and see how busy it is. And maybe they can reserve a couple of tables for us, depending on how many people will show up. Ooh! Even if our tables are spread out a bit, we can make it a competition. Table vs table! To the death! Or... at least 'til 2:00 in the morning, heh.
Anyone know what IHOP's tolerance is of people who hang out forever? We'll be sure to tip well. ;)

Whenever they had a smoking section, I stayed there for up to three hours sometimes. Of course, I kept ordering food and drinks so I wasn't just taking up space. The people didn't care -- especially if they got to tell you their life story while on break.

I'd definitely be interested. IHOP sounds like fun. Great munchies, too. :-) The silver dollar pancakes are great finger food. But I also didn't know they had wi-fi. Not that it will matter, since I'll be using Alphie this year (Ashley took Dana to college with her), because my laptop is on its deathbed.

Theres a McDonalds on poplar with WiFi and is open 24 hours, and I know of a Perkins that is open 24 hours, not sure if they have WiFi or not.

Is the dine-in area actually 24 hours? The McD's near my house is "open" 24 hours, but the dine-in closes at whatever time they feel like closing it and when I've gone there at night I've always managed to catch them during a shift change. Which one on Poplar is it? I see two on the website.

There's a McDonald's on Stage that I'm about 60% sure has an open dine-in area 24 hours a day. But don't quote me on that. I'll check today and make sure, then post back.
I'm not sure I can do a midnight write-in, but I'd be very interested in meeting up with and exchanging ideas and/or writing with fellow NaNo participants.

are we wanting this place to be out in the county, or in Memphis proper? I'd prefer Memphis proper myself.

I have beenin there many times in the earlymorning thanks to fire alarms being pulled quite often in the middle of the night at my old dorm. Each time they have been open, wether it's 1:20 am or 5 am.

There will definitely be other write-ins planned throughout the month. I'll be posting the schedule as soon as I hear back from one of my venues.
I'm not picky, I just like places that can fit us all. The weekend write-ins I'm planning will be in Cordova, because that's where I have an awesome free space to use.

It is so weird to talk to people who live around me! Normally everyone lives in, like, Madagascar or something and you can't talk about IHOPs and such.
Anyway, I am going to need people's AIM addresses (or Yahoo or Facebook or whatever) because I am just a little too young to attend this. I can just imagine my mom's reaction if I asked! Does everyone have them listed on their profiles?

My AIM is PsychoJungleRat, although I'm not usually on lately. If I'm in a place with wi-fi I'll definitely be online to start writing on November 1st.
Also, mistyquest, are you not allowed to come to this write-in because of the lateness or will you have to miss all the events?

Misty,
Bring your mom along. I used to drag my teenage daughter to these things. But she's moved out and is in college now, so it's just me. But we have lots of younger people (and sometimes their parents) involved. :-)

Alright. I can attend meetings during the week, but I work weekends (if you're ever over at the Malco in Wolfchase on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday around noon until 6, I'll probably see you! :D)
Anyway, the Miccy-D's here on stage isn't dine-in 24 hours - sadly. But, we can try during the waking hours later in the month or something. :D
At any rate, good luck to everyone! (I'll need it...)

My Father The Walking Encyclopedia says the Shoney's on Sycamore View is open 24 hours and has a back room. Not sure how the location would work, being geographically-challenged, or if they hve Wi-Fi, but there you go.

I would be definately interested in a midnight write-in.... that said, there is this lovely little thing of work. Based on the hours I've been working so far, I think a midnight write-in could work for me. I don't get my hours until the Saturday before (the 25th) so I really don't know right now. Also, depending on my hours will determine how long I can stay. It could be a thing of me coming in and saying hi.
As far as venue, I am no help.

Memphis, Cordova, and Germantown are all great for me. Just make sure whatever place we're writing at has coffee. That's my only real requirement.

My kids do Nano with me every year, and they're along for the ride. My daughter's 13 and my son 17, but their first years they were 11 and 15, respectively. Or something like that. I agree with Mary, bring your mom along! Let her meet us all. At least most of us are very nice. :)

Hey, Amanda, if your mom or dad are coming into Memphis for some other reason and it works out for you to spend the night here so we can take you to a write-in, let me know. You're always welcome.
And the other venue I know of that's open 24-hours for serving is Steak and Shake. I don't know if they have wifi, but they have coffee and the best ice cream around.

I'd be totally down for meeting up and having a write-in. :) That'd actually get me motivated to start! :D
E-mail would probably be the best way to get in touch with me, and it's a.pusateri@memphis.edu :)
Also, as far as the Wolfchase IHOP: there's a waiter named John who is absolutely amazing when it comes to hanging out for hours, and he's worked there for years. When it used to be the smoking section, we'd just sit in there for hoooours and just talk. So I doubt they'd have any problem with us chilling out. :) They're usually pretty laid back. I didn't know they had WiFi though!

I'd be all for this. It starts (technically) on a Friday, so I'm free until Sunday (the evil day when homework must be done).
I don't care where we go, so long as it's in Shelby County. On that note, I'm pretty sure there's a Krystal near the University of Memphis that's open 24 hours and has WiFi. Personally, though, I like the IHOP idea. I know how to get to the location in question.

Deborah, there is a Mississippi region, but the whole state is the region without being broken up by area. You may find someone closer to you there, but either way you're certainly welcome to be of Memphis. :)

Okay, it looks like the Wolfchase IHOP will work out just dandy. That's the one at 2810 Wolfcreek Pkwy.
I'm going to make the official time 11:00 pm to 2:00 am because that's when I'll be able to get up there (have Halloween stuff before that.) But if you wanna show up before that and stake out territory (preferably near an outlet if they have them) that's cool.
When I get there I'll set up a table tent to identify us. I'll probably be wearing my highlighter yellow NaNo ML shirt. If all else fails, I'm the one with the pink hair.
We'll have some caffeine, count down to midnight and then type our chilly little fingers off!
