A couple other NaNoWriMoers have been emailing each other around, and this is what we've decided:

(excerpt from email)

"When: Tuesday 14th, 8:30 PM.
Where: Barnes and Noble (Texas Ave, on the side of Best Buy).

Tomorrow, I will be wearing a white baseball T-shirt with black sleeve, that says... you
guessed correctly, "Texas A&M Aggies", or something like that. I know, it's not
quite original, but at least it is effective. I will have (and probably will be
reading) Midnight Predator, and I will have my laptop with me (a very small blue
laptop).

Just as a reminder

[phone removed]

As far as the beginning goes, we could meet 11:30pm Halloween at IHOP, like the past 3 years, gab,
then at the stroke of midnight start our novels. I will have to leave soon afterward because I have to go to work in the morning.

How nice, Wren. So what's your point? I'm sorry, but I was pretty certain that a consensus on the forum ought to be reached when deciding official write-ins. If you want to have your own, feel free.

Now, in the interest of making sure everybody's schedules are accommodated, what days are best, and what times are best? If need be, we could probably even schedule two different write-ins a week, so that everyone can attend at least one. That's what I've seen done in other regions and seems to work the best when there's conflicting scheduling. (This was a problem I noticed a couple years ago, and it meant there were a number of people excluded from activities.)

ETA: Removed phone number in the quote that wasn't noticed previously at the request of the person whose phone that is.

So you're the ML? I was under the impression that MLs were required to have done NaNo at *least* once.

Since you and your e-mail friends seem to be very new to NaNo and not understanding that's quite rude, well, you're not supposed to determine things for the entire vicinity and then word it as law -- which is how your tone is coming across with your whole "We were discussing it AWAY from the boards where the other NaNoers cannot have a say in anything and we are going to do it THIS way" highhanded manner of presentation. And since other people I've ran it by had the same reaction to it I did, well, I know it's not just me.

No, I don't much care for what I've seen here in the last three years it's been here. Which is a big reason I have to force myself to give a rat's behind about NaNo these days. I got 10 times more writing done at REAL write-ins in Austin than the ones that were here. Believe me, I'd much prefer to go to Austin like I used to where this kind of BS doesn't occur, but because B/CS unfortunately has its own regional group now, I can't. Unless I move to Austin. Which is getting to be a tempting prospect for a lot of reasons, including this one.

This isn't the Wren's Friends Writing Club. It's the B/CS regional lounge and all members should be given a chance to have input and vote on times and locations.

I have to agree with the others. This behind the scenes emailing is extremely rude and selfish. This is my third year in the group and I do not remember the other years being anything like this at all. Also, for the most part, "official" meetings should be set up in the boards by the regional liason.

This is my first year doing NaNo, so I'm new to the atmosphere here, but I have to say... would everyone relax? Let's not start a fight or anything over this. I agree, deciding on "official" meeting times without everyone's input, away from the public forum, is rude, but lesson learned and we can move on.

Anyway, I second the Halloween idea for a first meeting. If it's been going on for the past three years, it's a tradition, right? *laughs* I'm really not sure how often I may be able to attend write-ins, or if they'll even be effective for me since I normally need to be in my own little bubble when I write, but Monday night is best for me to meet on a weekly basis. Either that, or Saturday night.

:)

I'm sorry if i ruffled anyone's feathers, but who is to say there is only one group that can meet? The group I am emailing with were all gathered on Craigslist; I was just offering a suggestion, in case some people here wanted to go ahead and start meeting now. -shrugs-

Two groups and thus, two meeting times, might be best - after all, we're all bound to have wildly varying schedules and I'm sure none of us want to miss a week of meetings.

If you want to have a private group with your own offsite communication, that's fine, but don't advertise it here. But this is not the place to post about it, as that is a personal thing and NOT official meetups (which are coordinated by an ML, not just random meetings)

Does anybody have the administrative permissions to modify something posted for somebody else? Wren posted my phone number without asking me first and I DON'T WANT MY PRIVATE PHONE to be posted on a public board. Please, if somebody can modify it, erase my phone number from there. It was given on a private email, I didn't expected to see it posted here.

Best,

David.

The ML has that ability. I don't have her logins, so I can't do it for her, and she's asleep at the moment- I'll have her do it as soon as she gets up. I'm so sorry that this happened, David.

Actually, MLs no longer have that ability directly, but I'll post the link for the Regional Lounge Manager to take care of it ASAP

:/ My bad. I thought since you'd added that Edit on the other post, that you could do that here, too. (I clearly need to look over your shoulder more often.)

XD;; Apparently, I can edit the first posts, but not following comments. I didn't realize that either till I realized there was nowhere for me to click to access the post to edit it. :/

Ah well, it's posted in the correct lounge for those with those level of permissions to take care of it ASAP.

Dragonchilde did, I believe. ^_^ Either way, I'm glad things are smoothing out and that the confusion's been cleared up. Thanks for coming by and helping set the situation straight. I appreciate it.

Hi everyone,
Just a quick reminder that the only person who can edit posts is Dragonchilde! No one should ever edit another's post, even if it contains something sensitive like a phone number. Post the issue for Heather in the "Moderation Administration Requests" forum and she'll deal with it promptly.
Thanks!
Remember, too, that it is absolutely okay, and even encouraged, for folks to set up unofficial write-ins. There is no way MLs have enough time or energy to be the sole source of write-ins, and it is very helpful if Wrimos work up a little magic on their own. Just be sure you're posting the times and locations so other folks can join in! And hopefully the event will even make it up onto the Regional Google Calendar, too. The more writing the better : )
Thanks, everyone!
Lindsey,

Addendum: If you're planning write-ins unofficially, please do so on the boards so *everyone* can participate. As I said before, the more writing, the better. This is what NaNoWriMo is for! But folks can't participate if they're not in on the planning, ya know?

So what if we don't want someone around? With the hostility in the tone of those who whined to you, it's understandable that people don't really want them.

Well, you may suggest a meeting time, and tell people to send you a private message for the place, in case they want to attend. For example, somebody may want to invite a few folks for mini-write-ins to their place, and of course, under such conditions, one may want to be really really picky who to invite.

But under more general conditions, where privacy and space are not an issue, well, I would say that we may want not to be elitist. Though I got your point.
