Well hello...
In the past, we melbournites have had Melbourne specific dares. Last year it was to include a penguin (hence my current avatar). I managed to have my biggest and meanest space marine have a penguine tattoo.
The year before, amongst other things, was to include Elvis in your story.
So, we come again to needing something to put in your book. Before the forums were shut down, we had mention of a can opener. I like that... thats kind of random and out there.... so I say.. CAN OPENER...
And an animal... suggestions? And it cannot be a wombat (eyes Lauren).
A friend suggested the lesser tit (as in a bird), but knowing what a couple of people on here already write about, that would not be a challenge at all. Does anyone remember that scene where Elvis and the ninjas got it on? *shudder*
Perhaps a Narwhale? Or a Manatee? Something aquatic?

I think I might actually take up on the dare this year and not have wombats in my story :)
Something aquatic sounds like a good idea!

Perhaps a turtle. I don't know why but I think turtles are naturally hilarious. As are haddock. And llamas.

Aquatically speaking, I believe sharks are much friendlier than a lot of people think. They just like to express it in different ways, like biting and, err, chewing.
In short, I would like to see some friendly sharks being friendly but misunderstood.

I like the idea of a misunderstood shark.
And blue-ringed octopii look faaaaabulous daaaahlink!

Hmm... I'm sure I can work a can opener somewhere. As for the aquaitc animal, it may be tricky since my protagonist is starting in Nunawading and aiming to make Richmond his first stop. Maybe he could swing by the aquarium...
Is it bad that this is the first thing I think of?

I'd planned to put llamas in mine, so if we could choose that and make my novel-writing experience just that much easier? No?

Maybe you could have llamanatees - combine the two.
Surely you can squeeze in a mad geneticist somewhere, right?

Given that my story revolves around mad scientists, that's entirely probable.

I quite like the blue-ringed octopus idea, as they're a very Aussie creature -- by which I mean to say they're hideously lethal. Sharks are pretty Aussie as well.

We should definitely have something very Aussie. I like the idea of the Blue-Ringed Octopus, it is unique enough that it is probably not in anyone's story already, but still interesting enough to be included in some way.
My suggestion is the Thorny Devil:

In case people don't know, it bleeds from its tear ducts as a defense mechanism. Awesome!

Thorny Devils are so cute. I have this book on Australian fauna and flora and the Thorny Devil was always one of my favourites.

So, so far we have:
Aquatic animals: shark, blue-ringed octopus, turtles, haddock, manatee, narwhal
Animals: llama, thorny devil, no wombats
Random stuff: a can opener
I'd like to add the word zugzwang.
Don't forget we don't have to include everything suggested; it's just fun to have the list.

There's a rally for same-sex marriage on Nov. 28 so I challenge wrimos to include a gay marriage protest in their novel. Yes, it would look slightly weird in older settings but your characters could be just way ahead of their time.

My novel's set in the future, so with any luck I won't need to include such a protest 'cause it'll already be legal. I haven't yet decided just how far in the future, though.

Mine's set in the future too, but in my novel, I think I'll have them take it away.

A same-sex marriage protest would be rather out-of-place in my setting, although it is fantasy so I guess anything is technically possible. There are already some intentional anachronisms floating around. I'm focusing a bit on the nature of relationships and how various characters view them, so I may be able to include it in a symbolic way.
As for the other things... that's a lot of animals. We'll see. I really want to find a way to sneak in the can opener, though :)

In my future sci fi verse, I have characters that have relations with prostitute droids... while not explicit, I am sure gays marry gays all the time in my world.
I read back on that... and think... that sounds kind of wrong.... and then I think of something else...

There may well be an openly gay character in mine, but it all depends on where I can fit her in, if at all.
ETA: Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think that I can fit her in.

Because it's a stupid question and someone has to ask it, what are these Snerks people speak of? At the momment, I have a grumpy little creature about the size of a rabbit who wanders about being cranky at everything, and he doesn't seem like a lot of fun, what with him being cranky all the time and whatnot lol.
